The Raiders paid Russell roughly $40 million (now including the $3 million settlement), but received just three years of service in return. From 2007-09, Russell started 25 games—winning just seven—and threw 18 touchdowns against 23 interceptions.

People always talk about Ryan Leaf as the biggest bust ever but I still think it is Jamarcus Russell. Leaf at least bounced around and got a few looks from other teams. Russell played three years and then never played again. Between his constant weight issues, codeine addiction, and flat out laziness he has to go down as the biggest bust in NFL history. At least Leaf has turned his life around in recent years after bottoming out. Russell still seems like the lazy con artist he was when he was in Oakland.

The rumors coming out of San Francisco was that Lynch and Shanahan were on the hot seat. They were 2-4 in 2021 before going on that run. Had they missed the playoffs, both Lynch and Shanahan were probably going to get canned.
