This is what was written about Mayo's patellar injury back in 2014 (Short of it: don't expect Strange back this year, this injury frequently takes an entire year to recover from).

"
Important injury disclaimer. This is a similar injury to what was sustained by Giants receiver Victor Cruz, so there has been no shortage of discussion in recent days about recovery for players following surgery on the patellar tendon. There are different places the tendon can tear. Every tear might have a different dimension. And the health of the tendon prior to the tear is always an important consideration in any analysis relative to the repair and recovery process. These specifics aren’t known with Mayo, which is critical context. “You can’t put every player in the same package,” Bell said, adding that without being privy to the specifics of Mayo's injury, the discussion is limited to speaking in general terms.

Timetable is lengthy. On average, recovery is usually between eight months to one year. “It could take longer, but rarely would it take less,” Bell said, adding that the football-based seasonal calendar is something to consider (e.g. the start of training camp, in late July, would be the nine-month mark and some rehab-based decisions could be made with this in mind).

What happens after surgery. Mayo’s right leg will either be immobile in the early phases after surgery or have “protected/controlled motion.” It depends on the philosophy of those overseeing the rehab, with some varying outlooks on what allows the repair to best heal. The next phase in the process from there would be to regain motion and strength in the quadriceps and eventually move toward more aggressive work such as running and football-type activity.

Biggest challenge in the process. With any player in this situation, “the biggest challenge is restoring full range of motion when talking about bending.” After the repair, the leg is usually kept straight to allow it to heal, and as bending is introduced, the hardest work can come when trying to exceed a bend beyond 90 degrees. “It can be tight after surgery,” Bell said, adding that another significant challenge is getting full girth and circumference back in the quad as the tendon is basically the attachment between the quad muscle and shin bone.

Studies of note. Bell pointed out a study from the American Journal of Sports Medicine that provided more background on the topic. The findings of the study were that 19 of 24 players who suffered the injury returned to play.

Summary with Mayo’s road ahead. Bell pointed out that this is a “difficult, lengthy rehab” but noted the data above in saying “it’s very encouraging” from a standpoint of a player being able to return and potentially function at a high level. Bell highlighted the difference between Cruz and Mayo, as Cruz relies on down-the-field speed, while Mayo needs quickness/explosiveness for his position. Thus, it's hard to compare them because the demands of their positions are unique. Overall, when it comes to “explosiveness and power, those things take a while to come back.” Bell added this: “The Patriots have an excellent medical staff to oversee bringing him back from this injury. I see it as a situation where there is reason to be optimistic about his future.”
Same injury also derailed JC Jackson's career... not sure if it's more devastating for a CB or for a lineman who stays "home" to block.

Yeah.. I cant remember why either. Yeah.. doesn't really matter. Fact is if your on the field your valuable to the team if not we know your no use to an organization. Hope strange recovers well and can get back on the field.
Some people can be hard headed to the point where nothing gets through

A freak year-long injury on the field can happen in your 2nd year or in your 7th year. It can happen multiple times in your career (Gronk ACL and busted arm). Bernie Pollard can roll up on your ankle with a dirty hit and take you out.

These injuries are entirely different than injuries that make a player injury prone. When a player has an ACL tear from getting his knees taken out, that's very different from a stress ACL injury like Wes Welker's.

Two entirely different things, and discussing them should be treated as such.

What a massive waste of a 1st round pick. I guess the move is to put him on IR and hope he gets healthy... some day in the future?

Good thing Mayo is not Depending on him I don't see Strange getting his Starting job back. Bye we never knew you Cole Strange!

I just go back to the GOAT HC, when guys got hurt, like when ty law wasn't at camp for a contract/ankle issue. Him saying "availability is your best ability....

I wish Strange well but honestly do not see him in the Pats plans going forward
I agree and that's a fair assessment.. he had a stretch where he was solid and played well.. but he should have been 5th round draft pick..

I also do not see Strange in the plans of many posters on patsfans.com.

I have seen ZERO to indicate that the coaches don't want Strange back as soon as he is healthy enough to play, which may be next year, at worst as a backup.

The issue is. The type of injury he has can be career threatening. However he is an O lineman so he me be able to play at 80% when he is recovered. He's a young guy so he has that going for him.

My observation is because there's an agenda against him where posters want to see him fail to prove a point he was an idiotic selection in the first round. I don't think he'll be back because I believe they'll have to make a decision on his 5th year option during the next offseason and there should be someone on the roster that will seize the opportunity to take his job this season. If Strange gets his job back, it will show how bad the backups are.

And I think that Strange will play his 4th year and the team won't pick up his option.

If true, how will we ever really know the difference?

Kinda feels like a 1st round pick that's in JAX now...

The difference was that Mac was mocked as high as #3 to the 49ers. He was also mocked to the Pats which was why there was pretty much no resistance when he was taken at #15.
Agreed. I know 9ners really wanted him... I'm sure Mac and his people are pissed looking at Purdy in what he's able to do in that system.

While doing mock drafts in 2022, I noticed that I could take Strange69 with either of our 3rd-round picks the clear majority of the time; and more often than not I did just that… I also noticed that I could Always take him with our 2nd-rounder but Never with our 4th… I feel that referring to him as a 3rd-round value who should Never have been taken with the 29TH overall pick was then and remains now a fair assessment .
