It was barely a half-dozen years ago when the Pats & Brady were arguing over...$25M.

Did the salary cap, like, double or something since then?

If it hasn't, then what the heck's going on?

Time to consider caps on individual as well as team salaries.

Absurd for a QB who has not proven much of anything except he is above average, according to SPOTRAC his cap hits in the future.
I know the numbers will be played with and adjusted, but without regard it's ridiculous.
2028 $47 million cap hit
2029 $78 million cap hit 22% of their salary cap
2039 $74 million cap hit

Paying league-leading money at the most expensive position on a guy who has been average at best? Very strange.

Worst part is if Jacksonville didn’t pay, he would’ve gotten the same from another team in free agency. It’s a real head scratcher. It no longer matters if you’re the best QB, only if you’re the most recent guy to need an extension. Whoever is next (Dak?) will beat this deal, then the next guy will beat his deal, and on and on. In a couple years we will be at $70M a year average contracts.

This means Mahomes can continue to keep winning as they can build a team around him and Mahomes knows the 20 million extra to team can help find the difference makers .

This was the advantage we had for 20 years . You need a superstar QB who does not get super inflated salaries.

Mac says “hold my beer.”

“Hey, where did everyone go?”

but thats the thing. they are not paying league leading money.
the cap is rising. every year. it is pointless to look at the amount of money paid. look at the percentage of cap paid.
year 1-under 5.8%
year 2-6.2%
year 3-8.2%
year 4- 11%
year 5-14%
those percentages are very good for a QB with Lawrences upside and allows the team ample opportunity to build around him

Looks like Mac isn't the Jags future. Sad.
Had Mac had 3 seasons of 21TD- 10 INTS.. he'd had been in line for a pay day too.. now the only thing he's in line for is a pay day candy bar.

Mac would have had such if the team had recognized post Josh that Mac needed great coaching, and upgraded targets
the team did not recognize that, or chose to not care

Agree or just egos got in the way of said coaching..

These figures are confusing, isn’t his cap hit in the fifth year something like $70M? How does that equal to only 14% of the cap? I doubt the cap will be $500M in five years

The NFL better hope they continue to print money because their contracts are getting to be as ridiculous as the NBA and MLB. Lawrence is a good, not great QB. I say lower end of the top 10. He is getting elite money.

It is getting to the point that you want your first round QB draft pick to either be elite or a bust. If he is somewhere in between, you are basically forced to give him an elite level contract with so many guarantees that anchor your team to him even if he never lives up to expectations.

If Lawrence ever lives up to his expectations, this contract will be a godsend to the Jags. If he stays where he is, I think they are going to be doomed to be a borderline playoff team(especially if Shroud continues to improve) with Lawrence.

In 2029 (the fourth year of his deal), his cap hit is over $78 million. @rkarp1 must have taken his yearly average of $55 million and spread it evenly out over the five years. But even then, the cap exploded this year with I think one of the highest increase in NFL history if not the highest and it was only about $30 million. Assuming the same increases, the salary cap will be $375 million in 2029. Lawrence will count to about 21% of the Jag's salary cap then.

Trevor Lawrence agrees a new deal.

He has accomplished nothing yet. Now he gets a 55m per year extension? He'd better be Patrick Mahomes 2.0.

Just don't see it though. Feels like a really big committment to a guy who hasn't shown himself out as a legit star in the NFL.

That's right.. Brees contract had reset the market.. imagine bill wouldn't pay TB12 that contract.. that was the bare minimum he should have gotten.. not to rehash..but dam!! Dak reset the market with his deal.. now he projects to reset the market again his people are saying they are planning on asking for 60 million..

It's the market... basically any middling QB like Trevor is is going to easily make that. Plus the guy did bring his team into the playoffs so thst does mean something.. I'd say by next season CJ stroud will be in line.. but I hear you on what your saying. Drake will be developed correctly and I know he will be in line for a similar pay day after 2 seasons I'd say.

drake’s rookie contract isnt too shabby

it was an extension. the "new deal" does not kick in until next year.
2028, his cap hit is $47m, which is factored as 14% of the salary cap space
2029 his cap hit jumps to $78m, which is 22% of the assumed cap space, which is where the top 15 QB salaries sit (approx.)
the Jags have a 5 year window where Lawrence is "cheap".

I’m glad the Pats are not in the position to pay big bucks to Dak.

If Dallas is smart they would move on from paying a proven mediocre QB who wants a record contract.

I don’t think anyone can reasonably view a nearly $50M cap hit as “cheap”… I see your point that a cap hit like that in 5 years won’t be the same as it is today, but it’s still a damn lot for someone who hasn’t really accomplished anything yet.
