NEW ARTICLE: BEDARD: Strange Could Miss 2024 Patriots Season

They won't pick up his option, but I expect they'll try to keep him.
They don't need to try. Strange is under contract for 2025. He will be on PUP, and then IR, or directly to IR. We will have his rights for 2025.

Strange should be in 2025 camp, perhaps to compete for a roster spot, perhaps to be traded.

I’m still surprised about Mafi. Guy was an absolute mauler in college, absolutely tossed guys around. That hasn’t translated so far for him at this level. At least not yet.

I'm not. Dude's an unathletic & over-drafted (thanks again Billy!) ****ing blob who has No Business Whatsoever on the Left side of an OL.

Making an issue out of this makes as much sense as blaming Theisman for his broken leg.
Well, if he didn't run his mouth so much... maybe LT wouldn't have tackled him so footbally.

If you think that Strange is not as good as many of the 4th and 5th round left guards in the league, I guess that we strongly disagree.

We are NOT, are NOT, discussing whether Strange should have been drafted in the first round.

I think that Strange will be a OK backup to Sow later this year, or in 2025 if he is not back this year.

BTW, as we move Sow to LG, with Mafi as his likely backup, I look forward to the next round of whining about the stupidity of drafting a RG in the 4th.

They'd have to pick up the option (probably around or north of $14 million) in the spring of 2025 for 2026.

Don't see that happening.

Perhaps my understanding of the 5th year option is different than yours.

MY UNDERSTANDING
1. Strange is signed through his fourth year, 2025.

2. Before his 4th season, the patriots have the OPTION to extend him for the 2026 season. Compensation for 2025 and 2026 would then be guaranteed. For many, including Strange, the 4th year is already guaranteed.

3. If the option is NOT exercised, Strange becomes a free agent after the 2025 season.

4. If the option IS exercised, the team is committed to guaranteed compensation through the 2026 season.
=====
5. The team will NOT be picking up the option on Strange. The 2026 compensation would be much too high, even if they had interest.

I was referring to Mafi.

No, we agree on this. All parts, except that I think they may try to keep him. He fits Van Pelt's scheme, from what I've read.

A guy who can't stay healthy no thanks.

So in addition to being a clown Bedard is a doctor now?
Pats fans discredit valid reporting unlike any other fan base in sports. Maybe it's just this board, idk. Not positive about Pats = "fAkE nEwS".

This particular Pats fan discounts anything reported by fact challenged and fat assed Bedard. If he reports anything 'valid' rest assured it's by accident.

To exercise the option, we would be guaranteeing him about $15M for 2026. I don't see that happening.

Yes, I expect him to play for us for the 2025 season. He might start or be an unexpensive backup. If he does well, we might even try to extend him.

regardless of his draft pedigree, the news if true, sucks
Strange tried everything to stay on the field, but ultimately his body failed.
I agree, if it is his patella, chances are slim for a comeback this coming season.
he would be better served rehabbing the whole season and coming in strong for his last season under contract.
I wish him well.

The drafting of Layden Robinson must mean that the coaches do not like Sidy Sow. I thought Sidy was more than fine as a rookie.

We're right now looking at moving Onwenu to RG because Wallace can't play LT? So we have Sow and Layden Robinson, and in the future Strange at that position. 3 premium draft picks (I consider the 4th round a premium pick for a guard) at guard for one position.

What conclusion am I supposed to draw except that the coaches are not high on Sidy Sow?

For the Patriots, the thing that is really bad about his injury is that they lose the 5th yr option if he doesn't come back in his 3rd yr.

They won't give an injured player an extra year if they don't know how he's going to pan out.

So if Strange comes back and has an excellent year, he'll need to be a damn All-Pro for them to try to retain him. Otherwise, if he has a good 4th season, he'll go to the open market and they'll live with Sow or Robinson.

I think the assumption today is that Sow is the teams starting LG, no?

By default, maybe. I'm just saying that with a fully health squad we have one of Strange, Sow or Robinson starting and 2 of them on the bench. Two 4th rounders and one 1st rounder is a hefty price to pay to find a LG.
