I remember Mac, too. Mac had no pressure in college, to speak of, had the best college players in the nation around him. It wasn't until his Pats career began that he started getting pressure, and he has proven countless times that he isn't able to handle it.
I miss like everyone else (less than most but had Mac nailed down from day 1. He was an easy eval. I got killed by certain posters, not just DKF. Over this, his processing and a few other things. He didn't deal with pressure a lot un school, he had an outstanding OL. It was hard for some to grasp that but this is all about projection.

Some pre-draft/draft night thoughts on Mac ...
Burrow had exceptional pocket presence under pressure whereas Jones isn't nearly as good there. Mobility like Deus said but also better creating in the pocket, creating a new platform. Jones has very good-great general accuracy but his placement suffers under pressure, behind his first read.

Like many of Bill's picks he wouldn't have been my choice but like you I'm happy we have a QB with some promise/hope. I like Mac a lot tbh just don't like the value here. I've said he's a Kirk Cousins, Jimmy G type/tier QB for months now (which isn't a bad thing, some posters didn't like that but I'm seeing those comps today). Good QB's that can handle/process info, adjust and deliver accurate passes. Guys that look right, things look right-like they should be. Guys that aren't going to hurt you but at the same time they aren't making players better, they're efficient and keep things moving. So again the value wasn't there for me, obviously Bill/Josh & co felt different.

Ultimately landing spot matters and if it's 30% for everyone else it's 40-50% for QB's. Jones landed in a Lamborghini though. Him & Mills were probably the best MOF passers in last year and we're set there as we've been discussing since we made the signings. The biggest advantage he had in college was his OL, we're set there if we stay healthy. OL is more important than his targets. Defense is weird and doesn't really translate so we could be a lot better there as well. Obviously our coaching is top notch. Mac needs all that and some to make it work but we have that. Seemingly we're set up to compete day one.

I genuinely believe Bill & Josh signed off on this considering Josh is going to be hip to hip with him. Maybe Kraft too. Doesn't feel like a Bill pick, who knows. Like we waited, he fell. This wasn't an urgent pick, plenty of opportunities to jump up for Fields or Mac and they did neither. I feel like Bill gave clearance and basically Josh picked the guy he would be most comfortable working with towards success. Bill made the pick but I honestly believe Josh is the one picked the guy after the team spent what they did in FA to get this thing back on track.

Most credit his mechanics, which aren't bad but most aren't Bacon. Let's be honest the draft is a summer hot spot outsiders come to thinking they own the place. Bacon is a dirty townie that calls that ****hole home. Mac's mechanics aren't bad but aren't in their final form or utilized properly. Footwork isn't the problem here but it breaks down when he's moved off his spot and has to reset. Feet will occasionally touch/click when dropping back. Forget about "running", some are stuck on this, this is pocket issue. He base and feet are balanced, decent weight distribution but could be a little better. Footwork is a + overall

Tough to look for bc he was kept clean so often (seriously that OL was crazy, everyone will be drafted and play, Neal might be a lottery pick next year), some plays don't stand out and narratives get set but his throwing motion could be tweaked a bit some as well. Launch/Release point, follow through could be looked at imo. That would go a long way. Both can be fixed to an extent although I'm not an expert. Accuracy and decision making will suffer when moved off his spot.

He doesn't have the greatest poise when things are breaking down though, feet get a little happy but he's in command, in control of the situation, down & distance and what's in front of him. Knows where/who his hot reads are but the closer pressure comes in the harder it is for him to locate. Has a real problem with pressure the closer it gets. At times he'll occasionally see pressure when its not there.

Agree 100% with this.
I disagree 110%
I don’t get it. They’re ridiculous for not having a plan when Brady leaves…then draft the next big thing and have a plan, to not throw the kid into the fire and let him earn it as he should…and it’s called ridiculous….which is it?
Whatever stirs controversy and generates clicks.

That musket misfired. The story is pure fantasy, says Maye should be given top QB spot because he’s “the team’s best QB” when he hasn’t shown enough yet to merit such a billing. Let him prove he’s best, don’t start washing his balls just because he was highly touted coming out of college. So was Ryan Leaf.

Not just that - the story starts by complaining about no left tackle, and then says we should start Maye anyhow (and too bad if he gets killed). Let's get some of the other moving parts sorted first - the OL, the new coaching staff, the new system. Slow and steady is the way to go - not like we are heading to the playoffs this year given we are underdogs in every single game. Loss after loss is a good way to shake the confidence of a new QB. Let Jacoby take the first losses.

The musket misfired but Drake held his powder dry with that cannon arm.

Try the steak. I’ll be here all week.

Steak? How about something a little less common that I’ll feel guilty eating?

Yeah, it's nice that there's "no panic" by Maye at this point. But Mac didn't panic either until he was in a real game. So, trend is good but lets wait and see.
More context is he didn't start panicking until he took early, uncontested, no time to think shots in like four straight games in both his second and third years - and there wasn't a progression of losing his nerve - he went from rookie year where he could rebound from a hit and regain his composure to "AAAAH! AAAH! Don't hit me! Don't hit me! Here you can have the ball!"

This happens to the majority of QBs in that OL sucks/full breakdown scenario BTW - it's only the really special ones that have the golfers mentality of "on to the next hole" even if they get full on "punched in the face" sack wise over and over.

Also why the OL is critical. Every QB takes shots, but rapid fire, uncontested full on slams (sometimes blindside ones as well) will rattle 90% of QBs - this can't be allowed to happen to the new early pick.

Youz must be new in these parts.

People were dancing on the roof last preseason because Billy Bob Obrien was the OC.
And people were jumping off that roof by week 4... seeing how terrible the off was..

True enough. Hoyer took a brutal beating during his time in CLE and was never the same under pressure afterwards. Ok in a clean pocket but spectacular meltdowns otherwise.

Extreme pressure will cause even the greatest of QBs to panic sometimes. It could even force one of those greats into intentional grounding for a safety during the first offensive series in the SB.

That is true. Didn't Hoyer and that Houston team make a play off one year??

Agree is why we lost in the AFC Championship in Denver and the 08 superbowl

Oh lord… Mac failed because his line failed to protect him, okay…why didn’t that happen to Joe Burrow whose offensive line’s have been among the worst in the league?

Why did Mac fold like a cheap futon after week 13 as a rookie when he had one of the best O-Lines in the AFC and good coaching?

Now we have someone suggesting Brian Hoyer would have been better if not for his OLine in Cleveland… completely dismissing all the starts he made with a superior line prior… Brian Hoyer?!

Sometimes players are just average or suck outright… nobody ruined Ryan Mallett, he just couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn.

It’s way too early to speculate on Maye. Sidy Sow wasn’t ready to start in OTA’s or even the beginning of camp. Everyday and throughout preseason he visibly improved leaps and bounds to earn a starting job by week one. Not being “ready” now doesn’t mean much.

Camp this season will tell us alot. Going up against this defense every day in camp will be diff for all the QBs.. so the QB who is most talented in wich believe is Drake will be able to make the tough throws against tight man coverage. As peppers said they want to make it as tough on thier QBs as possible as it will only strengthen thier game.

Klemm is a college O line coach not an NFL coach. BOB took over a practice squad offense and a distress asset for a QB.
Klemm coached 3 seasons with the Steelers before serving 1 season at Oregon before returning to the NFL.

BOB is a nobody without a Watson or a Brady.
