"[Maye] hasn't done a lot under center, historically going back to high school and college," Breer added. "A lot of his work [with New England] has been under center, trying to get him to learn to do that. When he ties it all together, you see the talent -- what they are seeing is elite down-field accuracy ... an ability to go through progressions ... and there's no panic -- and that's another thing that can help him get on the field."

So it's possible that Maye will start the opener.
I don't get that impression yet. From Breer:
"I think the feeling is that over time, you're going to start to see Drake Maye working more consistently with the [second team], and then you'll see whether or not he can turn that into a real competition [for the starting job]," Breer added.

Hey, I just met you
And this is crazy
But here's my number
So call me, Maye-be?
In my young and single days I was good with numbers and wouldn't write down a lady's numbers when I asked for one. They were always impressed when I called them the next day.

I hope Mayo is as infatuated with Maye as Breer is. That would be a very good sign.

If I see anything from him it's usually here.

It's great to have a QB with potential. I don't feel like the Pats have had that recently.

That's a-Maye-zing

I think there's a lot of talk from fans about when Maye will start and the Patriots are mostly talking about what they're working on today. There's a long way to go and we'll know a lot more once camp starts wrapping up.

The most significant piece for me is that the coaches are wowed by how he does not panic AT ALL, how he is calm in chaos. You can see that to a degree in his tape but it is confirmed in person for them now. That’s a huge change from Mac and very valuable. It means even if the OL doesn’t hold up, or he has to go further into his progressions than planned or scramble, he can do it all with a clear mind.

Yep, and he seems to be making good decisions down the field and throwing with accuracy. Of course, it's only OTAs, but hopefully it'll translate on the field.

I've always been a let them sit supporter but I wouldn't mind seeing him come right out.

Funny, I'm kind of the opposite now. I was excited when Mac won the starting job in 2021. Now I think maybe it'd be better if they let Maye sit for a bit rather than rushing him.

I think it makes sense to keep him on the bench for at least a handful of games so he can get a good sense of real game speed, game flow, and all the things that happen in a game from the sidelines without having to do it himself. He would get the opportunity to observe and ask questions of his coaches between plays. Then after he has a good feel for it all he can step in.

I guess. I'm of the mindset that I'm just going to trust the coaches that they'll start him when he's ready and won't rush him if we're losing games early in the season.

I recall last preseason when Mac Jones was smooth as silk guiding the offense up and down the field.

Dropping dimes and spittin rhymes. Then, the real 2023 NFL season happened.

Yeah, it's nice that there's "no panic" by Maye at this point. But Mac didn't panic either until he was in a real game. So, trend is good but lets wait and see.

This is the tropeyist of off-season tropes: highly drafted but unpolished young QB is making progress...

Nice blast of hopium for the homers, but other than that, why bother writing it?

It's not like we'd ever see "highly drafted but unpolished young QB is a total klutz and a real knucklehead"...

I think a lot of people have this same thought and I don't think it's fair to Maye or the process to Hold Mac Jones against him.

That combined with the talk of him needing some work on footwork and mechanics and I think we've unfairly pigeon holed him to the bench. In essence making it some sort of massive mistake to play him too soon.

I say don't rush him and be cognizent of his mechanics but like any position battle you put him up against his peers and once he proves he knows the system and beats out the other guys at his position I don't see how or why you would hold him back.
