OT: CBS makes major changes to 'NFL Today': Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason out

Simms sez 26 years:

What's next?

A bit of googling suggests he was being paid $3M a year by CBS and his net worth is around $16M and he's 68 years old.

$3M a year to work weekends for less than half the year and read from a teleprompter is a pretty sweet gig.

I don't know, maybe sit at home and count your money and let the next guy get some of that action?

Yet Cowher was kept.

There is zero chance his networth is that small. He was a QB for the giants and then had a high paying job for 2 decades.

He could have burned his money but i doubt it.

As others said, surprised about Boomer but he is very active with radio and guest spots so am sure he still pulls in a lot. Simms I was never that enamored with.

CBS is trying to get younger again as they are preparing for the bomb to drop when Tom Brady takes over at Fox. I look forward to his color commentary.

Kinda surprising they stuck around this long. Usually in studio guys have a shelf life. ESPN cycles through them like crazy, but CBS has had their share of turnover. Easiason has been on the broadcast for 22 years. Simms has been doing color or in the studio for 30 years.

I am sure Cowher's time is numbered too. These shows tend to want to cycle in fresh blood over time.
Terry?

My requests before I even begin to care about who is there and who is not:

1) Go back to a 2 or 3 man group for the pre, mid, post-game segments. Have some occasional guests to throw in with insights specific to the week. They are really stretching themselves thin otherwise.

2) Bring back actual journalistic pieces. In today's landscape, that would make the shows stand out.

And my bonus request? NO MORE BETTING TIPS OR FANTASY FOOTBALL ADVICE.

I could see how Marino would take that as an insult, but what Boomer was saying was that Marino had to play perfect because his teams were inferior to the competition. Anybody know what game this was with Manning? During the 1st Dynasty, Manning's teams were clearly inferior to the Pats. 2004 playoffs, as the "idiot kicker" mentioned, was their first shot to knock them off due to injuries in the secondary.

Aaron Rodgers in GB was like this in most of his playoff games. Media kept falling into the trap saying how good they were until a team in the playoffs like SF bullied them repeatedly exposing their lack of talent.
Exactly. It was an interesting exchange. I understand what Boomer was saying. Marino didn't hesitate to position himself ahead of Manning. Funny..

His death stare at the end was epic

28-3
Can't help myself
I can't believe that I missed Comeback Day again this year. I meant to post a thread the last two years and forgot. It's tough to get old.

I have tuned out for some time now. It's all BS.
I'm not a fan of See-BS or any other network's pre-game show to begin with, but less is better and they've been heading in the other direction. Bring back the Nick and Len days.

I cannot tell you the last time I watched NFL pre-game on any network. Years. Like Jayne Kennedy, Phyllis George timeframe.

I like Boomer. Simms was overdue.

Fox needs to get rid of Bradshaw and Johnson. They couldn't be less insightful.
I agree. Simms is a goof but Boomer always seemed to give actual opinions and whether I agreed with them or not I always liked that he was one of the only ones to say something that may ruffle feathers.

I agree with most of the takes here, I don't watch any of the shows, but anytime Simms popped up it was just such a waste of time

Also agreed that I guess they think people will tune in more for former players or something, but I would much prefer having a couple of knowledgeable guys talking about the games as opposed to eight guys giving 10 seconds soundbites

With streaming and podcasts who actually watches NFL mass media pre-game anymore regardless of which station (FOX, CBS, NBC, NFL Net or ESPN)?

Sure, when the Pats dominated they got a little more screen time, but overall it's just puff piece advertisements for star players and gambling/fantasy segments.

I like this video:

I enjoy Simms on Mad Dog SXM radio every week. I don't watch the pregame shows so don't know how that translates to TV. Apparently with 37 people in the booth not very well. I feel sorry for Terry. He needs to retire to the home where he can be tended to properly.
