Pats' 3rd best player???

Man, that's a hard question. I think athletically and as far as skill goes, Wilfork and Samuel have gotta be it. It's been great watching these guys put it all together as they combine game experience with athleticism...watching Samuel bait guys, watching Wilfork anticipate snap counts and blocking schemes...he's always been great at snifing out screens. I'll always remember watching him stiff arm a pulling guard to negate a trap block against SD this year.

As far as a flat out ball player, I think Vrabes get's the nod. My cousin is a pretty good player in high school and plays outside linebacker and defensive end. He is always asking me questions about how to set edges, persue, when to get upfield, when to stay home, when to crash a gap, how to blow up a trap play, when to stretch a play out, that sort of thing (his coach is a useless donkey). I tell him to watch how Vrabel plays and mimic it. I used to model my game at outside backer after Vrabes. I can't begin to count the number of times I have said to someone during a game, "Vrabel made that play". His technique is flawless, his instincts are impeccable. I think he is one of the five best defensive players in the NFL, so I think he fits more into the #2 spot with Moss than the three.

Wilforfk imho

Re: Pats 3rd best player???

According to some on the board, they make it sound like its Maroney; he just hasn't had the opportunity to showcase it because we don't need his yardage.

My take:
Samuel

Show me exactly where anyone has said that Maroney is a top 3 player on this team. No one thinks he's a top 5 player on this team, some people just think its weird how obsessed some people on here are about ripping Maroney at every turn. An example of this being your dumb post in this thread.

BTW: #3 Asante - pay the man his money

I will make the argument that Moss or Harrison is their second best player. Look at their record with Harrison and without Harrison versus their record with seymour and without seymour. This team wins at least one more SB IMO if Harrison never got hurt.

There is without question that Brady and Moss are 1 & 2. Each are top 10 players in the NFL and each are the best at their position today and among the best historically. So lets not get confused and put Wilfork, Harrison and someone else at 2..the thread starter had the right idea, the debate begins at who the 3rd best players on the team is.

Agree. In terms of leadership, impact, & the sure will to win, I vote Rodney.

Yeah your right the 1-2 has to be Brady Moss. They are both among the best ever to play their position. I still think 3 is Harrison. I cant put Seymour or Wilfork ahead of Harrison.

When Rodney is on, he's top 3. Like those 2 goal line plays against the Steelers, amazing.

As he gets older the "on" times are getting less frequent, but I still give major props to those all old guys everyone likes to bash. Bru leads the team in tackles, Vrabel has been pressuring QB's like no other, Seau looks like a rookie out there, but with smarts.

Old phart power! :eat1:

it definatley starts

Brady
Moss
Wilfork

after that its sort of up for grabs

I can't believe there are some people on here who don't think Moss is #2?

Two games where the D takes Moss out of the game we almost lose. That should tell you all you need to know.

No one is taking anything away from Moss. I think he is great. But this is a thread that asks for opinion and in my opinion Wilfork is number two. He has not been in the league as long as Moss and he does not play as glamorous a postion as Moss so he will not be as well known. But, he anchors the D line and is a major force on every play. I can see an arguement for Moss and I can see an arguement for Vrabel.

If I was going to build a team I would grab Brady and Wilfork before anyone else.

Then Moss
Then Vrabel

yeah anyone would take wilfork over moss because of the age difference if building a team but the title here is 3rd best player.

Brady
moss
sivy

CUZ IM THE BIGGEST FAN EVER!!!!!

Brady
Wilfork

are 1 and 2..you can make a case for Asante #2 but hes my 3 right now.

2 years ago..Seymour was 2nd..for a while. Then Warren last year..Wilfork now. i think Warren and Sey dropped off this year..obviously Sey has but Warren i cant think of why. Hes getting double teamed at times but so is Wilfork and Vince is just flat out dominant.

Samuel is a top 3 player no doubt. Even ahead of Moss.

top 5
Brady
Wilfork
Samuel
Mankins
Moss

#37...........

no way dude.

hes not even the 3rd best on defense. i know hes playing well and all and I LOVE RODNEY..but hes behind Samuel/Wilfork/Vrabel at least on D today

were basing this strictly off this year

offensivly..Brady/Moss/Mankins are all ahead

Thats completely insane..Wilfork, Samuel, and Mankins are great players..who are probably top 5 in their positions this year. Moss is the #1 guy in his position and his skillset is so completely unique that there is no other WR who could give what he's given the Pats offense. He's unquestionably the best deep threat in NFL history.

If the thread was about is who is more IMPORTANT, I could see some of you coming with arguments for another #2, although I would still disagree. But to suggest that Wilfork and Samuel are better PLAYERS than Randy Moss is laughable. People dont even realize how ridiculous of a statement that is because Moss is just as good at WR as Brady is at QB.

i just feel without any of those guys on defense..were terrible. without Moss..were still a very good offense. not nearly as good..but championship type of offense with Stallworth/Welker/Gaffney/Jackson/Watson

basically. Whos more valuable to us right now? thats how i determine whos the best players.

You see thats flawed thinking because a player's value is dependant on the team they're on and said team's strengths/weaknesses. Obviously a player's value IS related to how good they are, but it is equally related to the needs of the team they're on. For example, if the Pats had an average QB, Moss would easily be the most important player on the team. He makes average QBs much better because he opens the field up for them, moreso than any other WR in the history of the game. The Vikings had one of the best offenses in the game his entire time there basically because of his production and the trickle down effect it had.

Dont get me wrong, I understand your reasoning for considering those guys arguably more valuable, I just dont think that equates to making them better players. When looking at these guys singularly, irrespective of team needs etc.., Moss is the obvious choice for #2. He's actually 1b, but #2 is fair because QB is the most important position in the game.

But we are only slightly above average on D with those guys. We are record setting on offense with Moss.

I'd say #3 is Asante. He has completely shut down his side of the field this season. I don't recall him getting beat once.

He's so good that he is unfortunately making Hobbs (a decent #2 corner IMO) look bad simply because the high volume of passes that are going Hobbs's way.
