FOXBORO, MA — The Patriots added more depth to their offensive line by signing former New York Giants free agent Lance Scott on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Scott can play both center and guard, and will add depth to an offensive line that has already lost Bruce Armstrong and Zefross Moss as cap casualties.
The news was not good for back-up tight end and long-snapper Mike Bartrum. Bartrum was released, and it appears that Scott’s experience as a long-snapper will make him the candidate to be his replacement. Bartrum, 29, has been the Patriots long snapper for the last four seasons, and has also seen some action as a back-up tight end. He was originally acquired in ’96 in a preseason trade with the Green Bay Packers.
As for Scott, he missed the entire 1999 campaign after suffering a right knee injury on September 5th prior to the start of the season, and was placed on injured reserve after the injury. In ’98, he started every game at center for the Giants, and also handled all of their long-snapping responsibilities. Giants runningback, Gary Brown, had a career year that season rushing for 1,063 yards on 247 carries, and averaged 4.3-yards per carry.
