I think so.. he's the HC, he and Wolfe likely decided that together. Anytime the team makes moves all season it's always going to be a question of if Mayo's making them. He's running the show collaboration with Wolfe.. my opinion is Mayo's going to state what he wants on offense and leave it up to AVP to run the offense and he focus on the defensive side.

Guy was actually a force against the run last season. I can see him retired, but also would not be shocked if he returned to the team on a 1 yr deal sort of like what happened with mills. We know these moves mayo made are all cap related. We will likely have better odds of signing cap casualties than what really available in FAs.

Unless Guy will accept close to the veteran minimum, any one year deal would cost about as much in cap.

Guy also had a few injuries, and you know the past practices and thinking that age and injuries are never a good thing for a player. However guys been pretty durable for a D lineman.. I thought mills hit was about 5 mil? If he doesn't latch on elsewhere say by camp I can definitely see him back in a rotational role. This move to me signifies that Keon white is the guy.

I don't think that there is much to learn from these moves. Trimming veterans who have gotten to the point where they are not outplaying their contracts happens every year on every team. In addition to saving cap space, it creates opportunities for other players and fosters an ongoing competitive environment. Letting the impacted players go early allows them to join a new team sooner. I can't see the team holding onto JC Jackson. The Pats may not be able to release JC immediately due to his mental health issues if the PA is involved. He also has a big, complicated contract where the timing of his release is important.

I don't know what the big deal it that ownership can just say Wolfe is the GM, tasked with making signings, roster decisions and Mayo is the HC that also has a say and works in collaboration. We all pretty much as fans know this to be the case. However ownership does need to be a bit more forthcoming.

It's not a big deal now, it's just that that kind of unclarity tears a franchise apart when things go south. When a drafted QB doesn't play well, the coach points at the front office for drafting them. The front office points at the coach for not developing a good prospect. And without a clear cut chain of command, it just turns into finger pointing and backstabbing.

Understand, the hope is to get the QB position righted Mayo and Wolfe saw first hand how it played out with the last first round pick at QB. Is why I've been saying mayo has been in the organization he knows what to/not do as a coach. There will always be coaching decisions he has to make of course. However I do like the more collective approach becuase this puts pressure on ownership to make sure the next QB right and adequately develop him.

On the back end.. either resign mills at FS, or target a guy that we feel can be a FS.. I think Dugger is getting tagged. Those are one of moves on defense I'd like to see!

Defensive football is the best. I just can't say enough nice things about it. The offense is athletic and youthful and will continue to grow.

First I’m hearing about him struggling. I find it hard to believe you can have a top ranked run defense with your NT struggling.

Now I remember...

PFF had him ranked at a 50.2 grade (102nd out of 130 graded DL)

This is PFF, so I know that's a polarizing source. It can often be difficult to grade an interior run stopping DL individually.

To expand into that, PFF ranked Tavai as their 4th best LB last year as well. Graded Bentley favorably as well. Barmore was ranked 8th amongst DL. Guy and Godchaux graded out poorly.

Seems like those are who they contributed to our run defense success.

Other than JC Jackson (and maybe Chris Board) I don't see any other releases coming soon. Nothing noteworthy anyhow.

Next year though we get to say good-bye to at least JuJu and DeVante and actually save over $12M. No such luck this year with either unless some major restructuring takes place. I don't see how that could work as neither is likely in the long term plans.
