Patriots new OC - Alex Van Pelt

QB is their biggest need, and the absolute worst thing they could do for their long term success is to pass on one of the top .3 QB’s in this draft, and then try to patch the position together for the long term with other teams cast offs at the position. Getting Tackle to protect Zappe and Jones, or dogshit Fields, or Harrison for an of those sucky QB’s to throw to is nonsensical. .
There is no argument that QB is the number 1 need and that Zappe Jones is not a strategic solution. The only debate is where and when to find the QB. If the Pats draft a tackle it is to protect the future QB.

I think its important to keep expectations for 2024 realistic.
Van Pelt is inheriting as bad of a situation as exists in the NFL for offense talent.
We could have hired Kyle Shanahan himself and the next year would almost certainly be abysmal.
There are no easy or quick fixes.

It's going to be rough and patience is required. I would hope to ta least see signs of progress b y end of year tow or early year three.
Who are you and what did you do with Sam?

Mayfield's a completely different story. If you're bringing him in, it will be long-term, big money, and he's the QB of the future (he's only 28, and truthfully, if they have the chance to do that, they should do that).

Wilson, you can probably get for 2/30 or something equally as cheap, to be a true traditional bridge QB.

You must be watching a different Baker Mayfield than the one I have seen. The Mayfield I have seen is a truly mediocre QB, who has never won anything..I would never give him big money to be their long term QB. If others want that then so be it, but I certainly don’t.

Patsfan Ken is also a Jumbo. My youngest granddaughter is a Tufts EE freshman. She hates Mahomes.
There was a Tufts player briefly on the Pats. A Lineperson (Heh) I think. Can't remember details.
Has anyone seen Ken? A lot going on, wondering what he thinks about all this. I think he was high on bringing Josh back.

If next year was going to be a good QB draft then it might be a different question, but it’s supposed to suck at QB, which means that 26’ will be the next real opportunity to get one, and that means waiting until at least 27’ for them to really start contributing. Additionally this is a great tackle and WR class, so they can take the swab at 3, then move up for either OT or WR and get a starter ther, and then just load up at the positions of need with the rest of the draft and free agency.. This is why I want them to address the QB with that 3rd pick, and I’m fine with any one of the 3.

If the team is as comfortable with any of the 3 top QBs as you, then it is a no brainer. The right pick can sit a year while the team sorts out the OL. Who really makes the decision?

I was a bit negative yesterday, but am more firmly in the camp of "wait and see."

Hoping for the best; it's the definition of "best" that I'm having a hard time getting a clear idea of (or rather, what is an appropriate expectation. Mainly hoping for a better season than last and for a true fight for the playoffs to be made, even if that means we miss out - it's be nice to be in it until the last round of the regular season).

Pelt's resume is marred with complete coaching overhauls, I'm assuming those are things he has no control over. What made the gem stand out in the rough is what I'm wondering, the context behind that would help.
From what I could see, he started off with two pretty bad teams with horrible QBs in the Bills and Bucs back when he was there. Like you said, the entire coaching staff was fired, which to me isn't a reflection on what he did.

Then, at GB for 6 years which was a contender team, where his contract expired. I hear Rodgers wasn't happy about it. Two years at Bengals team that were pretty bad w/ Dalton at QB before they drafted Burrow.

Dude's coached for some god awful teams. Let's just hope Pats don't get added to that portion of his CV and it looks more like his time w/ GB.

Purposely setting up the team to lose since Tom left.. NFL is happy with that because we won too much. For me, the HC hire is part of that. We will start winning when the NFL says It's OK to start winning again. These coaching hires are shockingly bad.

Well, maybe.

But other organizations six in total took a pass on Belichick. A hard pass on the coaching GOAT.

Thought experiment: if Saban were to have been let go in a similar way from Bama, would the same thing have happened in the college ranks?

The issue is not just Bill’s quirky and subpar drafting, but the guilt of ruining Mac Jones is falling squarely on the 71 year old’s shoulders.

Might not be fair, but that seems to be the consensus among the League.

No doubt. Teams are looking at Bill like he's from Chernobyl.

If true will give him a chance but he obviously floundered in Cleveland and was fired. Certainly there were other better qualified, more successful OC out there. I don’t care for McD but even HE would be better than Van Pelt….what is Mayo doing?!

I can live with that record. It may just win us the division back. Need to get AvP the toys.

I think there is a chance Daniels rises above Maye on the Commanders’ board with a good combine workout. Could happen. Maye is a better fit in the offense AVP will run.

If they had to rebuild the entire team I could see it taking 3 years, but they don’t, all they have to rebuild is the offense, so I think they can contend in 25’ if they make the right move this and next offseason.2 Drafts and 2 free agencies should do it.

And by the time you have spent 2 off-seasons on the O, the D is gone. You can't focus your assets on one side of the ball like that.

25 Free Agents on the D side of the ball in '24 and '25

The best player in this draft is Harrison, we would be fools to pass him by if he is available at number
3.

Daniel’s and Williams scare me as far as qb’s go.

If maye and harrison are on the board at 3, what can we get from Arizona to move down one pick????

This draft is being raved about as one of the deepest ever for WR's. You can build a successful team around a QB, you can't do that with a WR, no matter how good he is if he doesn't have a QB.

As long as they rate the QB's we have to take one. If not then we can look at other positions.

Joe Alt over MHJ.

I like his potential ... he has nfl wisdom ... hopefully that translates to success. Players make great coaches ...

Given how vital the run game is to AvP's schemes, maybe it's better to prioritize OTs.

Say we trade #3 w/ LAC or NYG and pick up Alt. We can then use their trade picks to move up and pick up Guyton at end of 1st. That'll give them twin towers at T. Pick up a WR in the 2nd/3rd. Bring in a vet bridge QB, a WR1, TE1 a stud RB, FS in FAcy. Pick up other O and D positions w/ remaining picks.

The only ? is there a franchise QB in '25 to target (Ewers?) and could we even reach that QB from wherever we end up picking.

I guess it's just **** it, IWWT.

Part of this with me is that I see it as a fresh start. I want them to have a great draft and free agency, but I want it to be to build a long term contender, as it was during the Brady years, so I want their QB to be here for the long run, not short term answers.
