Mayo's Coaching Staff [Discuss Coaching Candidates Here!]

The Dan Pitcher thing is interesting to me.

So he had 3 interviews lined up in the next two days to become an OC already, but now his own OC in Cincinnati just became a Head Coach, opening up the Cincinnati OC job. Seems perfect, right? He can just step into it.

Except… Cincinnati now also has to conduct two external in-person minority interviews as well even if they simply want to promote Pitcher from within. So by the time they get that done, Pitcher may already have a nice offer elsewhere for a job. And Cinci can’t say “it’s your job bro, we just gotta get these other interviews done” or else they risk another Brian Flores situation.

answer this question, and you will have your answer. who (on the coaching staff) gets noticed if the O takes off?

I mean, I guess I can buy this. BUT on the flip side just like you're the one to get noticed if the O takes off you can also be made a scapegoat by the new coach too. And the roster picture points to it being very difficult to turn this O around.

It's unfathomable to me that anyone here can argue with a straight face that that we aren't among the least desirable OC situations in the whole league.

I get it is a step up, but with the "talent" on this offense right now, it would not be a quick stop before moving to HC.
Well if they draft a QB at #3, an OT at 34, and sign Evans, Samuels, Barkley/Ekeler, Henry/Schultz, Onwenu, and Winfield Jr. things could look different this season.

The OC will may have a chance at handpicking a rookie QB to mold.

Change Evans to Pittman.

no one is expecting a 500 point offense in year 1.

you get the chance... you have to take it. The NFL is too competitive not to.

Ok. I am not suggesting that someone would turn down the chance at being offensive coordinator here to be less than an offensive coordinator elsewhere. My point is just that of all the OC jobs out there, a total rebuild is going to rank lower than spots with somewhat of a foundation in place. An OC coming in can't be 100% confident in who we might draft or who we might sign. He can come in with a good plan that he aligns with Mayo on, but it's easier to go somewhere the plan at least has some key cogs in place so you aren't as dependent on the unknown.

Any OC job in the NFL is desirable, maybe not compared to other teams but there's plenty of guys chomping at the bit to take an OC job with the Pats.

Whatever, the point is, coaches in general are over rated in how much difference they make. You need talented players first. They're the difference makers. You can have a top notch coach w/ mid players and he won't get results but a decent coach w/ talented players will perform.

Need to go crazy in FAcy and bring in O talent we've been sorely missing.

This is good. There's zero chance we'd be contemplating a change in scheme/philosophy w/ Bill here.

William Peagler is an excellent, rising young coach now with the Arizona Cardinals as an assistant defensive line coach. He should be interviewed. I’d put him at TEs on the offensive side. Super smart.

And Klemm didn’t do much. Granted look at what he had to work with. I’d have been upset too, Adrian.

But time to get the guy who was ramping up to be the Dante replacement. Cole Popovich is an assistant OL coach now with the Texans.

Let him take control of the hogs.

I don't think it's an accident the way Mayo is talking about the future. He's sending messages to FAs to make it welcoming & alluring to come here. The biggest issue we have (no diff. than other teams) is the lack of QB. So he says we're drafting the BAP at a very important position. Instantly everyone thinks QB. How else are we going to convince elite receivers to come here w/ Mac and Zappe.

The coaches are important, no doubt. He's focusing his search on a West Coast offense, so he's identified the scheme. He just needs to find a positional coach in the dozen+ teams running that system or in the college ranks. They are everywhere.

So...is it all him, or are the other two future fall guys helping?
Depends on whether it’s a success, or if he needs two scapegoats this time next year.

Are any of them guys Mayo would be chomping at the bit for a chance to hire?

point is, the most desirable positions will get the most desirable candidates, the less desirable positions will settle for the leftovers.

Who said that was the case?
I mean there are a lot of posts reading into Mayo's quotes suggesting that, a lot of mock thinking that it is the only path.

But in this case "if" is just marking a hypothetical.

Yes....but all of that is a projection that an OC hire would have to hope is going to happen when they sign a contract.

Rookie HC with a defensive background & a first time signal caller on Offense? Given the state of our QB room and the likelihood of having to develop a rookie QB, it's not a move I'd have a lot of confidence in...
Pretty sure that’s what the Texans did. Not that it’ll work every time..

Feels like he may be one of them developer fellahs Mayo was talking about.
