Jeremy Fowler said the Patriots won't try to resign Onwenu

I think one thing to keep in mind is the narrative at the end of the year may not be the narrative that really exists now. Mayo said yesterday his plan over these next few weeks is to, "rebuild some relationships, knock down silos, and collaborate," noting that "We have a good foundation."

It's entirely possible he'll look at guys that he believes are core building blocks and try and re-establish things, and could very well change the tenor heading into free agency for some of these guys. That could allow them to potentially keep some players who, in the past, may have walked away.

If any of you guys missed it, I highly recommend watching the entire press conference. Don't read the transcript, watch and listen to him, how he speaks, his mannerisms, etc. It's the only way to really try and get a bead on somebody, where his head is at, etc. Watching clips (especially which aren't always completely in context), reading reports, transcripts, etc. won't give you the same insight.

I can't find the link on ESPN, I only got a screenshot from a tweet:

Click bait??

Where do you think the team should spend their money? Who should the try to sign? This is no longer a prime destination. Sucky weather, sucky taxes, foxboro isn't miami

The Pats have a lot higher needs that cannot be as easily added like TE (we have none under contract), WR, LT, and FS. LT will be tough to find in free agency. This is supposed to safety rich free agency this year. The Pats have to get at least one veteran TE whether it is resigning Henry or upgrading.

As for who to get, who knows? We don't even know who is going to run the offense yet. How do we pick players for a system that we know nothing about.

But horrible teams historically have gotten top free agents to play for them. Players may not be running to come to play with the Patriots, but it isn't like New England is Siberia.

i only scanned through 3 pages of this, but they "essentially know he isn't coming back"???

this is a report? no sources, no nothing, just 'this is what i think'

this screams of 'we all know the patriots are cheap, the market for OL is going to be robust, so we all know he's not coming back'

i mean it isn't out of the realm; he's not worth a franchise tag, but come on.......

If I were spending the cap money, I would absolutely be resigning Henry, Owenhu and probably bringing in Mike Evans or Tee Higgins. We need a free agent QB, but how good of one depends on which way they think the draft will go.

What's the franchise tag for a guard? Because he might be worth it in this market.

Will onwenu really command more money than guys like brown and mcglinchey last year? I would think the $16m per range would be worth it to keep him around. Looking at what’s (not) available in fa this year what else you gonna do with our cap space, bring in riley reiff/ calvin Anderson /vederian lowe/ whoever else like last year? No thanks

Didn't know we have proven RT on the Roster great situation for a young QB. I am sure we remember Dereck Carr's situation in Houston.

haven't set 2024 yet i don't think?

2023 was $18+ and $16+ transitional......OL is OL
Well, that's fair since he does both guard and tackle. That seems rich, but he seems like the best OL on the market right now and we have (checks notes) no good OTs right now.

Trent Brown seems like a good Play in FA now if he and Mayo have a good relationship. OL doesn't look in strong in FA or the Draft. Maybe the New Brass knows something we don't.

All positions on OL are lumped together so franchising a C or G will earn that player premium OT-level compensation.
($19.9mill projected)

i can see both sides of that debate, yes.......and it sounds like he wants to stay, so signing him this year might get you a better deal cap-wise

but my point was, was there ANY merit to fowler's initial "report" ?

Why over-pay for anyone now? We ain't going nowhere for a few years. Be smart about the rebuild, take our time. I like Mike, but like others have said, a guard playing tackle isn't worth tackle money.
That’s part of the problem. Some don’t have the patience and think 2001 just happens all the time.

They could have also taken Broderick Jones over Gonzalez (Jones played very well this week against the Bills). But -- me no like that alternative.
Me either, if Jones was playing left tackle that would be a great example but drafting a RT is in the first round is not ideal to me. You go with the potential shut down CB every time.

No, I agree about the initial report not having merit, especially now that the whole personnel and offensive side is in flux.

Right, but if you don't pay for an oline, you're just going to get your QB killed, which will extend the rebuild for even longer (see the Colts with Luck or the Texans with Carr). This argument only makes sense if you're foregoing a high QB this draft and drafting an OT with 3 (or after a trade down).
