Mayo's Intoductory Press Conference

There is certainly depth at tackle this year but finding a more sure thing at LT is harder the later you go, so trading up makes some sense to me.

With receivers - yeah you definitely don't NEED to take MHJ and also sign Pittman but you have the money... I guess you could invest it in a TE instead. There aren't really any LTs in free agency worth chasing, Trent Brown is probably the best one.
There aren't really any OTs to pursue in Free Agency..

I do understand that finding a "sure thing" at LT is harder as you go deeper. All I did was say it CAN be done without having to waste precious draft capital to move up.

Hunter Henry is probably the best TE in FA.. He's going to get paid again. I would like to see Schultz and Sample brought in.

The Pats need a Free Safety who sees the field and can call out secondary adjustments. Not sure if there is someone like that available. I know that Antoine Winfield is NOT that guy. The Pats could also use someone opposite Gonzalez. There are numerous FA CBs and they get paid..

It also remains to be seen if Mayo changes out of the 3-4 Under set that the Pats have been using and go to a more traditional 4-3 or if they go to a more traditional 3-4 (5-2).

As for spending money, Barmore, Dugger, Jennings, Onwenu, and Peppers need to be paid. That can eat up quite a bit of that money they have.. Especially when you add 1-2 TEs and 1-2 RBs into the mix.

They asked him what is needed to fix the offense and he said “it starts in the weight room”. Really.
Mayo's first two hires:

I was dismissive of the DEI hire allegations I heard a few times but after that, wow. Mayo may have been co-DC under Belichick but also he sounds like he was the VP of Diversity. Add that cringe "Thunder" ass kissing. What a joke.

The "Toughest Division" in Football changes just about every year. Most people would agree that the AFC North has been one of the weakest divisions until recently. Mainly driven by the Ravens and Steelers. With the Bengals and Browns being the jokes of the league.

How many 8-8 seasons has Tomlin had?
Want to know why Tomlin's record is what it is? Because the Steelers have always had a running game. So it doesn't matter much who the QB is.

Tomlin has missed the play-offs 7 of 17 seasons. (58.8%)
6 of the 10 times that the Steelers made the play-offs they were 1 and done. (60%)

That's not something to strive for..
Please don't over analyze my post. Tomlin is a great coach he's lasted 17 seasons. The rooney aren't stupid.

It's far too predictable which posters will take issue with Mayo bringing up diversity and being a black HC. In an otherwise benign press conference, it's not difficult to see why certain people will be agitated about it. Trigger-some stuff from Mayo.

Its relevant to him and relevant to many black players. Learn to deal with reality, bud.

Not sure about Uche. Mark Daniels mentioned a Patriot free agent who said his number 1 priority now that Mayo was in charge was to resign with the team. And Uche was quoted positively on Mayo (along with another dozen defensive players) in an article about a month ago. For him to come to Mayo’s presser (and the only upcoming FA to do so) tells me he might be that guy Daniels mentioned.
hope that is Dugger, but don't overpay for safeties. They're free agent market is depressed

Give me a break. My point was that I previously dismissed the idea that his race mattered (as I clearly said) and then he comes out and acts like that's the most important thing about himself.

I'm sure you'd be cool with a white coach talking about how important being white is?

Honestly? Uche disappeared without Judon there. Jennings, on the other hand, rose to the occasion. He was stout outside setting the edge and was able put pressure on the QB.. I'd love to see what Jennings does starting opposite Judon. You have Barmore there on the inside and it's crazy..
A lot is going to depend on what base Mayo goes with. Will it be a 3-4, a 5-2, a 4-2, or a 3-2 with Dugger and Peppers changing things up as to who plays closer to the line?

It's all but a foregone conclusion that Guy is gone. It remains to be see who else will be moving on from the D-line.. I could honestly see Godchaux AND Wise traded, though Wise seems to have developed into the Willie McG "Leader" role on defense. Ekuale, Pharms, and Roberts are definitely replaceable. It remains to be seen if Trysten Hill or William Bradley-King (future's contracts) can carve out a role beyond the Practice Squad.

Barmore and Peppers won't take a lot of the free agent pot of cap money; they are under contract.

It's a tricky spot with Mac. Under no circumstances do I want the guy to start for us again but if we draft Jayden Daniels I don't think we just want to throw him into the fire. There would need to be a bridge QB, but I'd hate for it to be Mac.

I think Mac's only value to the roster going forward is as an example of what *not* to do. I fear Mac can only teach a rookie bad habits.

I am not going to have a lot of patience with this change. It already looks clumsy, and my interest in the Pats and NFL is waning.

I am not going to invest a lot of time in a dysfunctional franchise if they don’t get this right quickly.
Yes, let them know they aren’t impressing you in January. Give it some time….

They will with NEW MONEY. Which is going to be needed to keep them long term..

Good press conference.

I noted he brought up how the game has evolved since he was drafted and how he realizes that in terms of the team construction. I also noted he said something along the lines of not wanting to be in an echo chamber and wanting to be challenged. I can't help but to think that he was acknowledging some of the criticism folks had for BB at the end.

I enjoyed his ability to draw on real life experiences, take on hot issues (racism) and offer a different opinion than that of his boss, while sitting next to him.

I can see why guys might gravitate toward him. Energetic, clear and concise. Most importantly authentic.

Lots left to do.

LFG PATS.

If they skip out on a QB and believe in Mac that decision could set the franchise back for years. I know the draft is not guarantee however we know Mac isn’t a legitimate starter.
Nor is any other QB on the team (and we can and should do better regarding a backup QB as well).

He never said that it was the most important thing about himself. He used the words "diversity" and noted race and highlighted why diversity is important. The fact that such a thing makes you uncomfortable and causes annoyance is a you problem, not a problem with Jerod or anything he said in the presser.

He seems to have the leadership and communication with players to have them buy in. The real question is our personnel choices and positional coaching/coordinators moving forward. I am unsure of what to expect but I'm very interested to see how Mayo performs. I like his confidence.

That was depressing. Seemed like 2 guys up there who had no clue.
How many HCs get hired and are asked when they expect to win and say “we will evaluate”?
Expectations from a press conference are one thing - let’s see what they do with OC and staff and GM. That’s much more substantial to judge.
