Ty Law shares what he thinks Patriots should do with No. 3 pick

F*ck that nonsense. Take the QB & control his rights for 5 years minimum if he’s legit. We have a top 3 pick. Why are people overthinking this..?..

I think the 49ers are the exception but all the other playoff teams have a legit QB. As a fan given the choice give me the QB. Teams have searched for years trying to find a franchise guy. You can always get a good wide receiver in free agency. A franchise QB that's very rare.
Agreed, providing that BB isn't in charge of drafting and/or acquiring our future WR's. If "The Guy" at QB is in this draft for us, get him!!!

They're afraid they might be a bust

You'll find as many bust 1st round WRs as bust QBs in the last decade.

It's a 50/50 proposition in both cases

2013-2022 drafts:

15 stud WRs taken to 22 bust WRs. I have 4 as marginal picks at this point: Davante Parker, Marquise Brown, Jerry Jeudy, Jameson Williams

13 franchise QBs to 20 busts (or non-franchise QBs, includes Tedy Bridgewater).

The percentage of hitting on your pick is around 40%.
Some of the best WR's in the game were taken in the 2nd round and later. Unfortunately, BB whiffed on all of them. Your point is valid.

Obviously..but you can’t let that deter you from taking one. Any draft pick could potentially be a bust; even Harrison or Alt (although I highly doubt it..). I think they’ll both be exceptional players.

Well, I mean, not all. Pop Douglas looks good. Mitchell looked good, Edelman, Givens. That's 4.

Agreed. But we need to do much better. And, that's not many over a 24 year period.

Nor were there even many picks. In recent years we've spent more picks on WRs than we have over a decade.

I suppose the belief that TB made the average at best WR's look good is true. Although Edelman was a stud in his own right. And Gronk was just a freak.

Agree completely. They have the worst QB situation in the NFL, and a top 3 pick with 3 really good QB prospects coming into this draft. You fix the QB with the #3, then address the rest of your needs with free agency and your remaining picks. It’s been over 30 years since they have been in this situation, don’t blow it by getting cute with the pick.

Exactly. Even if it’s not that simplistic, it’s all still so simple..

It is true with many WRs. Brandon Lloyd, Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney, LaFell and Chris Hogan were no doubt helped a lot by Brady and the offense. There are examples where this isn't true too (Galloway, Ochocinco, Wayne).

The Patriots got away with not using draft picks on WRs because of the constant influx of weapons from other means.

Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Martellus Bennett, Lloyd, Hogan, Cooks, Amendola, LaFell, Cordarelle Patterson. Even Josh Gordon went for 720 yards one year.

In the draft, they had a bunch of pass catching RBs : Faulk, Vereen, James White, plus Gronkowski and Hernandez, and even Mitchell for a year.

The perception that not enough was being done occurred when the whole approach bottomed out all in the same year. Bad draft pick in N'Keal Harry, then Josh Gordon and Antonio Brown became headcases, Demaryious Thomas looked sluggish in camp, a lot of draft choices expended among these 4 with next to nothing to show for it. Then they got desperate and gave up a #2 for Sanu.

The method for acquiring pass catchers worked well from 2007 through 2018. And in 2019, it all blew up in the worst way possible.

They put a lot of resources into these positions when you take into account trades as well as $$ and some draft picks.

Agree--the only thing that makes me nervous is that there are no LTs in FA. So they need to grab one in the 2nd and maybe 5th, 6th rounds as well. Once again, we're not going to be able to take a WR early.

They have to look into FA for one.

Because we have a lot of offensive needs to fill and quite a few of the top prospects in those positions won't be there for our second pick.

It's crucial we get our first pick right and imo the qb options are probably the biggest risk compared to Harrison and Alt.

About the only highly ranked guy I'm a hard no on is Joe Alt. I'm not a huge fan of Caleb Williams or Drake Maye either. But I could live with them.

You guys really get enamored with this athletic freak stuff at QB. You don't need a sprinter or a cannon arm. You need a guy who makes the right decisions. Who has had to learn how to throw in tight windows, who has constantly been in tough situations. Mahomes isn't who he is JUST because of his physical skills. Neither was Brady. Neither was Montana. You have to find the guys who are football fanatics.

The things is, there’s three guys at the top of this draft who fit the bill of exactly what you’re describing. All top 3 guys are accurate dual threats with pocket presence, nice arms, intelligence who succeed under pressure.

You really believe what you see out of a USC QB? History is not with you.

What makes you think there will be a third QB sitting there who will change your scenario? QB is the easiest bust pick to make.

I did indeed. Up and down, like the rest of the Denver year. He can still play.

Why not Cousins? We need two tackles. There are WRs in later rounds this year and next. Patchwork tackles always seem to disappoint.
