Assume the draft order stays where it is now and Bears decide to keep Fields and really want Harrison and the Pats really want either Caleb or Maye. If the Bears choose to trade down, Harrison will not be there most likely beyond pick #4. So, their best trade partner would be the Pats. Pats move to #1 and take a QB, Wash takes a QB and the Bears get Harrison at pick 3. The question is, what would the Pats need to give up to move from #3 to #1 knowing that the Bears will not get Harrison if they trade down with any other team.
I guess it depends how badly the Bears want Harrison...or would they rather have a few future #1's that won't help them next year.

Or trade down just enough to still get the OT like Alt, and then getting Penix?

Home run potential.
So what if Penix is gone? Again, we shouldn't clown around at QB here. a trade down for Alt and Penix may just not be feasible.

I think there's an assumption here that Penix and Nix will both be there in the late 20's/early 30's. I'm not so sure that will happen.

So unless you really believe in more of a McCarthy type, you better be ready to take someone in the top 10-15.

I like McCarthy, Daniel’s Ewers if he comes out and Nix, Pennix injuries scare me.
Starting to sour on Drake Maye, I can’t put my finger on it but something about him screams Jag.

None of these kids can offer first-year help, they're all projects that will need seasoning. Good argument to snag a franchise OT with the first pick and maybe a QB later on.

Maye reminds me of how I felt about Herbert coming out.

People overrate Herbert now, but definitely was still very wrong on that one.

Assuming the Patriots beat the Jets, the Pats will most likely be in the #5 slot. Given the number of positions in need of an upgrade, and what it would cost to trade up, in that scenario the team is probably better off staying put and taking whichever OT (Alt, Fashanu) is still available. They could probably still snag a QB early in the 2nd (McCarthy, Nix).

On the other hand should the Pats go QB at #5, they could opt to go for OT in the 2nd (Tyler Guyton, Kingsley Suamatia, Jordan Morgan).

Just please, no more sixth-round rated special teamers in the second round.

Still a decent chance to wind up at 4 with an Arizona win, wouldn't even rule out a Giants win over Philly right now with how Philly has looked.

It will really just depend on who is still there at 5. Definitely a good chance Arizona takes Marvin Jr., so that probably means 3 QB's are selected. Maye and Williams for sure. Then probably one of Daniels/Penix. If the staff likes Daniels or Penix enough there, I think you still pull the trigger.

But if whichever guys available are not who the staff wants, then I agree. Go with Alt. Don't take a guy you don't believe in.

Why would yo do that with a chance of elite talent possible at your pick? It’s a QB league, you don’t pass on elite talent. Before you go down that road, Yes I know it’s not a given they will work out and the same could be said for your 1st round OT.

I hope item #1 is true, and that the Pats can draft no worse than pick 5.

Losing to the Rats is not an easy proposition.
Yeah, it was clear with SOS even before the BIlls game that 5th was the absolute worst if the Pats won 1 of 2. Interesting thing is that if the Pats win, since they played the Jets twice, that's a double hit to lower the SOS. If the NYG lose to the Iggs, then that's a double hit to raise the SOS. That alone would cover the 0.007. It's the other games that could make the difference because I can't find actual win/loss records for SOS.

To me, going from probably #3 to #4 or #5 wouldn't be worth the entire offseason's worth of the sour taste of a loss to the Jets.

The difference is a first-round OT can start right away and have an impact. If they can get that and perhaps pick up a promising QB project a bit later by trading down, it might make tons more sense. I don't think you can say any of those rookie quarterbacks possess "elite" pro-level talent at this stage. The potential for maybe one or two of them to become elite a couple years later, if everything aligns, is a better way to look at it. Even then it's a pretty big "if."

I also like the fact that an OT tends to have a long career, and it looks like there are a couple of generational OTs in this draft.

The NFL comp for the top 3 prospects Williams, Maye, Daniels are Mahomes, Herbert, and Lamar Jackson. You'd be crazy to pass on any of those guys if those comps are accurate. This is shaping up to be the "Golden Generation" of QBs.

The Patriots also will have a high 2nd so they can easily trade back into the 1st for an OT if they deem the right player is there for the taking.

What’s the rush though? The team is far from contending.

I'm more of a trade back type. More picks means more chances.

I couldn't find some of the older player's info and didn't remember the possible FA pickups. But this is a list of the QBs that I could dig up. I also added in Big Ben and Brady who'll be in the HOF;

Not to “cherry pick” but that list looks different if you start comparing since ‘83

Penix will be 24 next season. Has there ever been a QB to come out that late and be successful. Top 10 in NFL?

Alright folks….didnt see an other NFL game thread so I’ll ask….who are we rooting for the next 2 days? ATL for sure, BAL today too?

Interesting question. This article talks about it, looks like the ceiling is Chad Pennington

So what happens if Pitt wins cause it certainly looks like they will easily handle Baltimore’s backups.
