Rare occurrence of both teams losing a trade. Fant is a middling TE, Boye Mafe is the only standout player Seattle drafted. Verdict is still out on Charles Cross. The rest are on other teams or busts.

I think their options are:

A) Cut him with a post-june 1st designation to eat around a $35M dead cap hit in 2024 and defer the remaining ~$50M dead cap hit to 2025
B) Find someone who will trade for him, which raises the 2024 dead cap hit to around ~$68M, but leaves the 2025 cap untouched
They will most likely look to trade him... Might have to eat some of the money, but he still has some value

Theoretically Pats could send Denver a 5th in exchange for Wilson and a 2nd, in order to relieve them of his contract. Then NE could either keep him for what would basically be 2 years/$54 million fully guaranteed ($27m per year), after which all future salaries are non-guaranteed, or they could immediately cut him before the 5th day of the 2024 league year hits in order to avoid his 2025 salary becoming guaranteed and just take a $17m cap hit in 2024 in exchange for a 2nd rounder.

Depends on what you think of Wilson. I think he has looked better under Payton this year but obviously not quite what he once was. If they wanted to go the "veteran QB starter, draft a rookie to develop in 2nd round to sit for a year or two" route then Wilson is an option and you might be able to get a pick back in the deal that you could use to select said rookie. Or you just dump $17m off your 2024 cap for the pick. I think you'd get a credit if he signed with another team as a free agent as well. Just food for thought.

Edit: Jesus, Denver doesn't even have a 2nd. These guys...
I don't want Wilson. Overrated, too busy running around and causing pain for the OL when he could simply follow his reads and then get rid of it. Live to the next down. Yeah, I know he's better than what the Pats have... don't care.

All set.

Hard pass.

I would pass on him, too much $$$$, and he’s no longer the player he was earlier in his career.

1. Pats trade pick #140 (5th round) in exchange for Russell Wilson + picks #75 and #78 (3rd round)
2. Pats immediately cut Wilson, incurring a $17M dead cap hit in 2024
3. Pats draft Jayden Daniels with 1st round pick
4. Pats trade their 2nd + one of their three 3rds to move into late 1st to draft WR Brian Thomas Jr., Jayden Daniels' buddy
5. Pats still have a couple 3rds for OT prospects

Then we’ll take their first

This is Sean Payton making sure all the blame goes to Wilson. Remember, he is the one who totally ripped Hackett prior to the season starting and now his team has drastically underperformed and he does not want to own it.

We'll see. He made it clear that he will see what his offers are.
Baker is the kind of QB that plays to the talent around him. Give him a decent OL, a good OC, and stud receivers and he's a top 10 QB.

Give him what the Pats have and he's burnt toast. The Pats need to rebuild their offense first before making a big splash at QB.

We will have the money and draft capital to put top talent around Mayfield. The defense is prime and ready to go.

I really like this, Ross. Now we’re talking.

Now they need a QB now.

Agreed. Plus we might find out there’s no need for a big splash at QB.

Nobody really knows Zappe’s ceiling. There are lots of folks saying he’s limited, but he is still getting better. Ride that horse until he stops getting better.
