Midseason Thoughts on Chad Ryland So Far

He surely redeemed himself last night...

All I know is that Big Kick Nick wouldn't have hit a 56 yarder with 10 yards to spare.....
Agree. Looked like that would have sailed.more than 70 yards...

With Nick we wouldn't have been in that position.
We needed a new kicker after last year. It was obvious. We couldn't kick 40 yarders, needed a guy to handle kickoffs. We just took the wrong kicker

Ryland has a strong leg. His Accuracy has been way off this year. Seems like its a confidence and anxiety issue.
He might get his head straightened out and maybe there is a chance he could cone back next year and be a good kicker.
Seems like Bill is trying to be patient.
Maybe it will pay off?

At Mile High? Don't bet against it.

Such fun watching fans root against players on their supposed team.

That's because most of these useless ****ing stiffs won't be around when we do become - with the help of a New Outsider GM - actually good again.

He was also taken almost a full round-1/2 after WideLeft was.
4th vs 5th... Eh, about the same to me... both wasted picks really... One mired in controversy over something stupid so much so he never played and the other a year 2 (in Minnesota) version of Scott Sisson...

Captain, we'll never agree on the Ryland pick, but that's okay - I respect your thinking here.

My thinking is simple: "Who cares if they traded up?" The Pats drafted 12 players and only had room for 3 UDFA's (none of whom have seen the field, other than Cunningham, who showed nothing and is gone).

Their last couple of picks are gone (Speed), on IR (Bolden) and one hardly even sees the field (Boutte).

There's only so much room. Maybe Ryland will get over his yips and start kicking in games the way he is apparently kicking in practice (according to the coaches). Maybe not. But getting the guy you want - at ANY position - is better, to my thinking, than grabbing another player who'll almost certainly be buried on the depth chart.

12 picks is a ton. I know they've got six contributors: Gonzo (shutdown corner), White (Barmore's Beast Buddy), Mapu (who is starting to come on - forced that fumble last week, got a great pick on Mahomes, and was around the ball a lot the last couple of weeks), Pop Douglas, Sow, and Barringer. Pretty sure you can add Mafi to that bunch, but he's still raw.

I think Ryland will work out, and wish they'd start throwing the damned ball to Boutte. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Bolden (really rooting for the kid) contribute.
If two years from now 7-10 of this year's draft class is contributing, seems like a pretty amazing draft. (No idea on Jake Andrews - there are a couple of really good centers, one who might be around in Round 3 this year if he's not up to snuff, but again, I have no info on him at all.)

Had a friend send me a screenshot of the 2022 draft where he said every pick was horrible. None of those players are contributing.

But it's really just a matter of him rushing to bury Belichick. When we look back in 4 years, it may very well be that:

1. G Strange is playing as well as any guard from the Belichick years
3. CB Marcus Jones returns to his All-Pro returner status and is also the Patriots slot corner
4. CB Jack Jones is playing well for another team or he's in jail (either way, the evaluation of him as a solid 4th rd pick was the correct one).
4. Zappe: a good 4th rd value for a backup
6. RB Kevin Harris a backup RB
6. DT Sam Roberts backup

2 busts:
2. WR Tyquan
4. RB Strong

This isn't a good draft but by no means is it a bad one. 2 busts, 3 good starters (all 3 potential Pro Bowlers, Marcus Jones already highly rated).

And don't forget the trade down for Cole Strange already landed the Patriots with Jack Jones, Zappe and Marte Mapu.

We'll see where we are in 3 years when they're at the end of their contracts.

Agreed, but I think the 2023 class is far superior.
