Discussion on Jerod Mayo candidacy as HC

Some degree of continuity is necessary to function. It would be inaccurate and unwise to consider everything in BB's program disposable. I think we need to remember that the dysfunctional elephant in the room has been roster/talent management, first and foremost.

While I agree to the premise of your post, hiring Mayo who largely has been under the BB tutelage while in the NFL, whether that's a player or a coach, sends a message that the next regime is in fact just a closer facsimile to the BB era than starting a new era.

So you're basically saying hire a GM first and let him pick the coach?
Either do that or get a HC that you are confidant can play GM as well.

Don't hire a GM through one process and a HC through another and then create the inevitable "grocery" issue.

That might just have been a Parcells thing, how do other teams operate? Do you know? I don't.

Well, Bill is a 72 year old white guy ...

Pass. Give me an offensive minded coach. Easier to find good DCs.
could hire Mayo as HC and bring back Josh McD as OC. I would really like the first hire to be a GM and let them bring in coaches.

If ... BIG IF ...Belichick moves on I would love to see Mayo get a shot.
That offensive/defensive minded coach has never convinced me.

What is all comes down to me on Mayo is whether he is willing to break from Belichick on a lot of things that Belichick believes and does that are outdated. If Mayo realizes that he cannot just win with a solid defense and an efficient offense that doesn't turn over the ball, that would be a huge plus. If he puts someone in charge of the offense who is willing to modernize the offense and do what is working hopefully someone from the McVay/Shanahan system I will feel better about hiring him. If he changes Belichick's over-emphasis on special teams players especially paying for ones who don't bring much to the table.... If he and the new GM realize that you need offensive talent unless you have an elite QB and even then you need at least good offensive talent....

If Mayo does what other Belichick disciples do when they get head coaching jobs and try to replicate the Belichick way, then forget it. I don't want the guy. And he will likely end up all those other guys with very short head coaching tenures with little to no success.

If he wants to modernize this team and do many of the things Belichick has refused to do in recent years, he might have a chance to succeed.

Agreed. I think Mayo might have the right juju to be a HC, but what makes me nervous is he only ever played for BB and coached with BB.

It would drive me nuts if he instituted the same coaching practices as BB that don't affect or detract from the play on the field.

Does Joe Judge stay?
Asking for a friend.

The decision will probably have to happen after this season. Bob has high draft picks and tons of cash. It wouldn't make sense for the new HC to come in after 2024 assuming the trend continues with Bill not having enough impact players and they have a mediocre at best record.

As far as a new GM maybe they name either Matt Groh or Eliot Wolf as GM, they already have a working relationship with Mayo. If it is Mayo I hope he doesn’t name himself the DC, hire someone to do it and focus on the whole team.

no on mayo. no on defense. get an offense first coach with no Belichick association. if we're going to get someone with a Belichick stench on them, I would rather go with Bill O'Brien than mayo

Yeah, I'm fine with Mayo... but I'm more worried about who he hires as OC.
I'd imagine Billy O stays on as OC BUT actually runs the offense as he sees fit without Belichick restricting certain concepts.

The problem with that is Billy O will get offered a job again and the new rookie QB will be looking at a new OC with a new playbook...sounds familiar?

Mayo may be a great choice, not only is he well versed in defense but has spent a lot of time in this organization and knows what it takes to win.
Need a really good General Manager and revamp that whole office
Need to decide on a D coordinator also..
Is Josh McD the answer at OC?? Or is new blood needed there??

The GM usually picks the coach, so none of this has a lot of legs in reality..
