Yes that's correct . I keep looking back at some notes from Dingleberry and I get confused thinking when I take the away team to win I have to change the number from a minus to a plus...........way too late for me to get into this betting sideshow.

Yeah, you're thinking of the favourite, not the home team (although it could be the home team of course). If a team is favored to win by 3, the spread is -3 for the favorite. Conversely, that makes the underdog +3. So if the favorite wins by 2 (which is the equivalent of -2 from the winner's perspective), the +3 underdog wins.
