I can't remember if this exists in the NFL too (I think it does...) but in the NHL there's a rule where, even if the puck crosses the line before the whistle (like on a goalie cover), if the ref was in the process of blowing the play dead, he can rule that it was dead. Basically, when you hear the whistle isn't necessarily exactly when the refs have deemed the play over. This one felt pretty late, but still falls enough into that grey area that it doesn't bother me in hindsight. You're right that the rest of the bad calls were far more egregious.
I tend to agree but I also battle with aligning this thought process with the “tush push” plays where they permit the play to go on and on and let other players push the ball carrier way after progress has seemingly ended and then count that new progress gained via the push in the back. So it kind of feels like a no win situation for a defender. I am sure if instead of the ball being punched out, a lineman came in and shoved Mostert forward another 2 yards, the whistles would have stayed holstered.

Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of those for defenders nowadays.

This is a frustrating piece for me with BB. Much of his defensive genius is being whittled away over time by NFL rule changes and “gray areas” that create either serious offensive advantages or just downright impossible scenarios for a defender. If you’re not employing someone at the top seeking to exploit these changes and “points of emphasis”, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage from the start.

Hopkins couldve easily been a patriot too, for not a ton of money. Before the puzzling decision to extend parker, many of us were calling for him to be traded /cut to save 6m this year and sign hopkins for about $8m extra I believe. Very fair price to pay to go from someone borderline useless to a guy on pace for around 1200 yards.

Bill mentions his players are protected like everyone else’s but points to a play that wasn’t flagged, and we all know about other plays in the game where guys got hurt that also weren’t flagged. Meanwhile the Dolphins got their flags and protection. So what is Bill talking about here?

He's being diplomatic, because he doesn't need the league fining him on top of it all, or inadvertently putting a target on them. I'm sure he's mentioned all of it behind closed doors through the appropriate channels. Not sure how much difference it makes, but it's probably the better route.

Yeah, if anyone can explain to me the difference between JuJu's hit on that play, and the hit on Parker that knocked him out of the game, I'd love to hear it.

I couldn't help but think that the league has deemed the Dolphins worthy as the next flavor du jour. It's their turn to get the breaks and they'll be matched up against the Swifties in the AFCCG in January.

I should stop watching the NFL. It's so crooked. If it wasn't for the Patriots.... I swear to God I hate the NFL. Love the game, hate the league.

Nowhere to go but up !!
Folks who understandably have already put this season in the rear view mirror will point out that worst record in the NFL is there for the taking—both possible and consequential.

Lots of indirect Patriots connections here. He spent 2008-2011 with the Patriots, including as TE coach for the incredible production from that position in 2011. His brother is on the practice squad right now. He’s close with O’Brien, who tried to hire him both at Penn State and Houston. I just don’t see a job opening for him in NE next season.

Offensive assistant?

I’ve been a fan since 83. There’s not even a word for how spoiled we have been in New England for sports alone. I used to be sick all week waiting for the win, then sick all week when we lost. I’m sure many on this board can attest to that. Picking first over all or second or third or fourth , guarantees you nothing but a huge chance to blow it. I wish every sports fan gets not only to feel what winning a superbowl or World Series is like, but also what 18-1 felt like around here. Lol it was forbidden to talk sports amongst my friends for about a year !! I look forward to Sunday’s now in the hopes, at least fir just the time being, to ruin other fans weekends !!! What they gonna say ? We suck?

I have plenty of complaints like everyone else but this ain't one. Forward progress was pretty clear regardless of whistle.

The most baffling one is not calling the helmet-to-helmet on the Parker hit even after discussing it. Just brutal. The PI in the endzone too. And the Zeke trip.

At any rate, sadly, the officiating didn't likely change the victor, just by how much they won.

You can tell how bad the officiating is when even certain posters on this forum start saying WTF.. And that happened in the game thread. Numerous missed calls or calls favoring the Dolphins while the dolphins did the exact same thing.

It was almost like the video that I saw of the Eagles game last week where the ignored 15 calls against the Eagles while calling the same in their favor.

They won the turnover battle today. They’re not losing games due to turnovers (it’s due to talent), although they’re going to get blown out if they lose the battle.

Another reason they're losing games is because of all those turnovers by the QB.
