Speculation about Zappe getting cut

I think they will draft a mid round QB next April.

They will most likely keep both in 2024, but Zappe's position might be on the line if the rookie looks better.

But Zappe will be the backup this year.
The only thing is if they continue to try and develop Cunningham as a QB... if he looks competent then zappe might be out a year earlier than I think

I remember posters here torching his pre-season performance.

It even went as far as them bringing in other QBs to workout. They had two guys scheduled to come in, then once Brady got injured they cancelled the visits. Theory at the time was that they were trying to upgrade from Cassel as the backup, but Brady's injury accelerated the timeline. They knew they weren't getting a brand new guy up to speed in a week, and they didn't want Matt looking over his shoulder. Cancelling the visits was an unspoken vote of confidence for him, even if in truth they were thinking of eventually moving on from him. Worked out pretty well considering, just too bad they couldn't sneak in for a House Money kind of playoff stint.

Someone (can't remember who) floated the idea that they would get trade offers from teams who were interested, and then ask Folk where he'd prefer to go. I think unless there's a crazy offer like a 5th while everyone else is offering 7ths, that would be a nice way to send the guy off. I don't know if Ryland WON the job necessarily, but he has the longterm upside.

I always thought it was just bad timing and they were bringing in the other QBs to basically update their list of potential QBs available (as they do at every position, pretty much throughout the season) and it had the appearance that they were looking for an upgrade over Cassel and so they cancelled the visits.

Guess we'll find out. I just don't see him as a major upgrade to anyone's QB room worthy of being on their 53 next week.

And honestly he looks lost currently. Fortunately for him I am not sure any of the available guys are worth taking a flyer on either.
He looks terrible. Part of that is due to a **** line and the other a new system.

Yeah I get it. But seems like he's struggling with grasping/commanding the offense after an entire off-season and Camp. I don't know, soured me on him I guess.

Independent of the preseason games, Zappe's numbers in camp and the reports from the media about the camp practices was that he was doing well, but not well enough to overtake Mac. I think the team likes him better than the board does because they've seen more of him.

Exactly. He very may well no longer be a system fit here but he won some games as a starter which not many current backup QBs on NFL rosters can say.
I wonder if it's a system fit or if he spent all offseason trying to change his mechanics to combat the batted balls and it's messed him up?

It's possible. I remember in 95 when Drew was trying to throw more over the top as opposed to the 3/4 throw and he was awful.

Also very possible, they do that all the time.

This is incredibly possible.
I think you may of hit the nail on the head here.
You would think the coaching staff would of saw had bad the execution was and how he was struggling.

Right, but if it's mechanics, it's probably fixable. If it's a system fit, then maybe the Pats are more serious about moving on from him.

He will absolutely get claimed
Better backup qbs out there

Colt Mccoy
Carson Wentz
Mason Rudolph (if he is released)
PJ Walker
Marcus Mariota (if cut)
Will Grier (if cut)

Like rbs backup qbs are a dime a dozen

I would be happy to see him cut and claimed. No upside with Zappe.

Dream would be to trade with broncos for stidham. That would be a great improvement over Zappe, but I think he is untouchable

geez. zappe sure has fallen from grace. From the chant to the QB competition to might he be cut. I think he's fine and agree with the crap line being the major problem; pretty similar to what happened to Mac last year and I give him a pass for that. I don't think you suddenly forget how to play.

Good backups who know your system are not a dime a dozen

I could see a situation where they add an older backup QB to the room, without much likelihood they ever play, but I think it's more likely they get a young guy (Cunningham if they really like him) on the PS and elevate him if something happens to Mac.

The fact that you recognize their name (mostly because they played and failed) is not a valid evaluation system.
