Should we worry about or regret Kayshon Boutte getting cut?

How many went on to NFL greatness after the Pats cut them?

They know what they have or don’t have. We’ll see how much he plays in game three with the bubble guys.
Gosh, we have had a lot of WR that did nothing come through the organization

There are no legacy spots on a 53 man roster. If Bill wants to cut him, he will let him know so he can retire. If he makes the team, will because Bill thinks he can do what is needed.
I had Slater early as a potential cut along with Cody Davis and now adding Guy to the list. Had Rieff going to but think his work at guard has changed my mind. Wavering on Slater. Bill might keep him for leadership but I think it's time to move on with younger guys with more position flexibility. Having Slater last year didn't help special teams a lot.

I think it's certainly possible he gets cut, but I do think he's shown enough that they'd want to keep him. The injuries to Gesicki, Montgomery, and/or Thornton will probably determine Boutte getting a spot on the initial 53 man roster. They can cut LB/DL/ST depth to get any of them on short-term IR, and then let it play out from there.

I posted in another thread but will repeat here, and may get attacked for it

Matthew Slater is a Patriot thru and thru, nothing but love for him, but at 37 years old we need to focus on the future and we can't be cutting some of these young guys who are oozing with potential just to carry a 37 year old special teamer

Whenever I use that roster tool to create a starting lineup, Slater is always an odd duck that makes it difficult because hes not really a wide receiver, but essentially always takes that 6th WR spot every year

We're going to need that extra roster spot for guys like Boutte, or some young guys we drafted along the offensive line, or for one of the young DBs. Slater helps us this year only, these other guys could help us for the next 5-10

Slater has also lost a few steps, you can see in replays etc that he's lost his top gear
Gah, cut the highly respected team captain and leader because he doesn't score fantasy points. My guess is that you've always wanted to keep skill position players over any special teamer.

In his later years Anthony Pleasant was kept around more for his leadership and mentorship than his play on the field.

Same applies here.

his leadership is top notch no doubt, id just hate to lose a potential young prospect for 1 more year of his on field special teams play, when he could retire and we could still get his leadership as a coach.. and if there are injuries, then he could come back as a player and help out lol
Brand new assistant coaches get paid nothing, and peer leadership from actual players is essential to team cohesion. Team captains are not just honorary positions and cannot be replaced by more coaching.

As I see the roster projections from some of the better folks in the media, I think it's unlikely that Boutte will make the roster. No way BB is going to carry 6 WRs plus Slater on the roster. As a 2nd round pick, Thorton is a lock and his speed is still valuable to clear underneath routes (or at least I hope it is).

As fans of this team, most of us are starved for the opportunity to see a rookie WR receiver develop into a stud and why so many are pulling for DD AND Boutte.

Realistically thinking though, should we really worry if he gets cut and makes it onto another squad? We should be able to draft another receiver with similar upside in upcoming drafts, but I think the anxiety comes from how poorly we've drafted at the WR position in the past.

I disagree with the idea that BB won't carry 6 WR AND Slater. He's done so in the past.
There will likely be some finagling at the cutdowns much like they've done before with Ferentz and Murray and others. Where they cut players whom they believe no one will grab. Make moves the next day to place players on the In-Season IR and then re-sign players they cut to refill the spaces. Hell, they did it one year with FOLK and people spazzed out that we didn't have a kicker.

People says that there are no legacy spots on the Patriots. I disagree. There have been Legacy Spots for players. Troy Brown. Tedy Bruschi. Julian Edelman. Tom Brady would have had one as well had he not left. Matt Slater has one.

Things of note:
Unless Davis and Flowers get activated today or tomorrow, they're starting the season on the PUP.

The Pats have normally gone into the season with 5-6 RB/FB. I could very easily see them going with 4.
I could see the Pats starting the 53 with only 2 TEs as well and adding one of Sokol or Firsker after they've moved people around.
The Pats have normally carried 9-10 OL. They could go with 8.
I can see the Pats going with 5 CB and 5S with Bryant the odd man out. Yes, I think there are Zone coverage teams that would trade for Bryant given the chance since he's adequate as a Slot Corner or Safety AND he plays Special Teams.

I CAN see the Pats carrying 6 AND Slater.

@JarOfMayo51 is one of the most level headed Pats fans on this board. I've never seen him babble in favor of a Skill player over a Special teamer. He's NOT like certain people on this board who regularly crap on special teamers.. Jar fully understands what Special Teamers bring to the team .

I think we need to know we had a solid core and Brady was very reluctant to try out rookie receivers. Besides Brady had a strong core of moss, welker, Edelman, Gronk, amendola, white , troy brown and david givens during his 2 decades. Others rarely stood a chance and hence we did not really draft offensive weapons as we could get them via trade as free agents flocked to NEP. Now there is no Brady . We need to give some time for rooks to thrive. We gave 3 years for Harry. Boutte has shown more now than Harry ever did . So disregarding draft position , Boutte needs to be given the leeway.

Let's assume Boutte is also a second round pick like Thornton . What would you do ? Would you cut him in hopes of passing waiver ?

If we espouse the mantra of may the best player win, then Boutte needs to be on 53. No questions asked.

That's the same with EVERY team. People just refuse to acknowledge it.

I doubt that every team has missed on as many WR picks as the Pats, so I guess I'm one of those who refuses to acknowledge it.

Given the Pats desperately need a developmental WR with a ton of upside, they'll fins a spot for him. They very rarely hit on that position in the draft so they'd be foolish to cut him.

They have one in Douglas, who will play behind Smith-Schuster in the slot and has Edelman+ potential IMO. Boutte is a posesion receiver, but Bourne is better. Tough cut hopefully he can make it to the PS.

If the Pats were going to do that why not do it with Slater?
Leadership this is why BB brought him back. See how BB consulted him when Bolden was injured.
