Surprise cut candidates 2023

To me, a "surprise cut" would be someone like Lawyer Milloy. HE was a surprise cut. Myles Bryant is not a "surprise cut".

Here is who I'd be surprised if they cut (no this isn't who I think will be cut):
David Andrews
Jahlani Tavai
Davin Godchaux
Jalen Mills
Bailey Zappe
Pierre Strong

If the thread is renamed to include "or traded" I will beat your well played Zappe card with my slightly more likely yet even more shocking Uche card.

What did I win?

Exactly. It's not like those guys are pushing him for QB2. Still not sure why McSorely is on the team at all.
McSorley's just a camp arm. Need reps for the depth guys. They want Cunningham to get quality reps at WR so they needed a third arm.

I have thought about an Uche trade also. If they don't think they want to pay the price it'll take to keep him then they could perhaps move him but I don't know what someone else is going to pay for one year of him + exclusive negotiation rights before free agency.

On one hand I can see the wisdom in just holding onto him and taking a comp pick if he leaves for a big deal. But on the other hand, they've got a ton of cash next year and may be spending themselves, so they may cancel out their picks in the comp formula with additions they make. Trading players they can't or won't keep next year will let them gain picks that they otherwise won't get via the comp formula if they sign several free agents - and they'll get the picks a year sooner, too.

By this logic you could put Onwenu in the same bucket. If the kids look fine at guard... could happen. I really doubt it, though.

I have zero interest in an Uche trade unless the price tag is a significantly high one. Getting an impact player in return or a 2024 pick in the first couple of rounds.

He has too much value for this years team to get shipped off. If he signs a huge deal elsewhere and we get a 3rd round comp pick for him, then sweet. If not, I still don't want to give up having Uche this year just so we can have a mid to late round pick next year.

I would be shocked if Slater was cut - he'd retire if he just couldn't do it with this latest injury. BB loves him and wouldn't cut him.

An Uche trade wouldn't really surprise me based on the contract extension talks his team is having with the Pats now - if the Pats don't see any way to keep him beyond this year, BB might sell high. I doubt there would be a comp pick coming if they just let him walk after this year, as I expect them to be buyers in the next couple of FA periods. Wouldn't surprise me if they traded him, but it would hurt.

I'll stick with Trent Brown or Kendrick Bourne as the surprise cut/trade if one were to happen. Both bring big CAP savings - something like $8 and $5 million respectively. From what I've seen on Sundays, I feel like Bourne might be the best WR on the team, but I don't think the coaches have ever seen it that way.

It would cost the Pats money to CUT Thornton, so if he were beaten out for a role, they'd almost certainly put him on the PS, and if he's poached, he's poached. I'm pretty sure he'll be on the 53, then maybe put to IR if his injury needs more time. Even though I'm not really a fan to this point, I certainly don't think the Pats are ready to give up on him.

Bourne. He was in Patricia's dog house last year and was one of the people who was a malcontent in the locker room. I think he's going to be a surprise cut.
You don't cut a cheap $4Mill guy wo have proven he can play in this league. I think Bourne will be Traded if the young guys continue to shine. We should showcase him if healthy in that upcoming Tennessee scrimmage I am sur Vrabel could use him.

camp arm and maybe practice squad candidate

Steuber, Sow, or J. Andrews, with the hope of getting them onto the practice squad. Late round/UDFA guys that haven‘t done anything in real games yet but may have shown promise in practice.
