Surprise cut candidates 2023

Bourne. He was in Patricia's dog house last year and was one of the people who was a malcontent in the locker room. I think he's going to be a surprise cut.

Phillips?
Guy?
Bryant?
Folk?
Mills?
Slater?
Bourne?

Phillips would certainly be a surprise, dude is an excellent player and plays a key role on D.

I think a Bryant cut now would be a surprise to me because I think he's versatile enough to at least provide depth inside or out and we know BB loves that. I thought he was a cut candidate a year ago and he still got a lot of playing time.... which he shouldn't have because he's not good enough to start. Barring injury he probably won't start as much this season if he makes the team.
The value of Bryant is that he can be an inside or outside corner or a safety and he understands all the roles. The issue is that he’s not very athletic. It’s not the end of the world if he’s got a roster spot being depth for multiple different roles but our best case scenario is that he goes to the practice squad and gets promoted if/when injuries accrue. Nobody is gonna poach him but he’s good to keep around.

I'd never think I'd live to see Slater get cut, but his mystery injury and missing practice may lead to his unexpected "retirement" - IF BB has seen that his new ST leaders are good enough. If Schooler and Speed can carry the load, and BB has felt that there's enough solid locker room leadership - from guys like Bentley, Andrews, Phillips...

The local beat guys suggest his best skills are zone coverage, versatility and tackling. I agree with that to some extent, we've seen him make plays on occasion. Still rooting for a better player to beat him out for an active spot. I like your idea of him on the PS, he knows the system and could still be an emergency depth piece.

He is a good tackler, but he’s not fast or athletic enough to get to the right spot to make the tackle unfortunately. He is smart though, he’s a guy the rookies and second-year DBs would probably like having around especially with McCourty gone. Keeping him on the PS keeps him in the building during the week.

Guy or Phillips.

I don’t understand the Phillips mentions, as I think he’s a lock. If he’s cut, that would DEF be a ‘surprise cut for me’.

I’d also be shocked to see Slater cut. Seems like BB and he are very close and if he wasn’t in the plans (or had lost a step) he’d not have resigned / would retire with honors before getting cut.

I think GUY is the potential cut.

I am going to go with Randy Moss.

To me, a "surprise cut" would be someone like Lawyer Milloy. HE was a surprise cut. Myles Bryant is not a "surprise cut".

Here is who I'd be surprised if they cut (no this isn't who I think will be cut):
David Andrews
Jahlani Tavai
Davin Godchaux
Jalen Mills
Bailey Zappe
Pierre Strong

That would indeed be a shocker. There's no good reason to cut him now, they would at least wait till it's decision time on his year 5 option. If they don't want to pick that up I think it's more likely he'll be Stidham'ed somewhere else than cut.

Right.

So, Bryant shouldn't be on the final 53. We can put him on the Practice Squad, and/or re-sign him after Game 1 (or not).

Adrian Phillips? That would be a shock, he's been fantastic for us the last couple of seasons. Depth at safety is still a question mark too with Devin gone. I don't want him cut.

What do we do at backup if we cut him? Can't roll with a project like Cunningham and McSorely at the backup spot.

Exactly. It's not like those guys are pushing him for QB2. Still not sure why McSorely is on the team at all.
