There is no QB competition but it's good to see both QBs having a good camp.

World of difference compared to a year ago.

Yup, regardless of how you feel about Mac vs. Zappe, having a starter who's having a good camp AND a backup having a good camp is nothing but positive. I hope they both keep building on it.

I kinda feel sorry for Matty P having to take the fall for last year; I still have a soft spot in my heart for him because of the courage he showed supporting Tom by wearing that Goodell-as-clown tee-shirt in public...

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Or you're Dante Scarnecchia and you're just a legend from start to finish.

Comments/Impressions:

1.) I really wish NFL teams were allowed to expand their rosters to say 75 or 80 players. We have a lot of "developmental" players with potential that we just won't have the time to nurture with NFL teams not practicing as much as they used to, a shorter pre-season, and etc.. For example, Boutte has potential, but we know he isn't making the 53 and will likely be a PS candidate unless Bourne is traded...or something. IMO, Boutte likely will be poached to some team's active roster.

2.) Am a bit concerned about the tackle situation....the good is that Brown looks great and seems to be locked in, but if he ever gets injured...we are screwed. I mean the Reiff/Anderson/McDermott inconsistency on the right side makes me think that at some point this season Onwenu will have to kick out. When the Saints signed Trai Turner last week, I was asking myself why we weren't in on that BEFORE Turner got hurt yet again.... I want us to keep looking under rocks or something...gotta be a FA OL-man out there that can be a solid swing tackle?

3.) I am interested in how Jalen Mills has been doing at safety. Still worried a bit about us not really replacing D-Mac's rangy ability.....

I think that's kind of the point of having a smaller roster with a larger practice squad. It gives more players a chance to play, while still making sure a worthy player isn't buried six deep on a depth chart because he happened to be drafted by a team with a glut at the position. It allows for emergency backups to be practicing with the team, without completely eliminating their chance to be more than that (if another team values them). Could be tweaked for sure, but not to an extreme degree, IMO.

So far from what I saw yesterday and have read otherwise:

• Encouraged by Trent Brown, Hunter Henry, Douglas, Juju, Wise, Mapu, Jon Jones, Bolden. Not saying anything negative about others except as noted below, but am focused on LT, TE, WR on offense and all 3 levels on D.

• Discouraged by Strange, Sow, J. Andrews, Hines, THORNTON, Boutte, Barmore, Roberts. Not that I've seen anything terrible but was hoping the 2nd year guys would pop already (hard for an OL obviously).

I’ve been of the opinion with Boutte for example that he was going to wind up on the PS, the guy has talent. Same goes for Cunningham. Guys like Hines, Steuber, Nixon, Bledsoe are probably also heading in that direction, I can’t see any of them leapfrogging but obviously it’s only Day 1 in pads so a lot remains to be seen

I guess it is commonplace to want to jump to conclusions from almost no evidence, when watching your team practice for the first time.

All I can ask is for you guys to stay off of jury duty.

I pretty much agree. One thing though, I don’t think it’s as much leapfrogging off the PS as it is attrition thinning those who are on the 53. Guys like Steuben and Hines are more likely to make the roster not because they’ve elevated their game as because somebody ahead of them went on IR.

Based on what he's shown so far, I don't think any team is signing Boutte to their active roster. I think a year on the PS would be really good for him to see if he can put it together.

IF that Jalen Hurd kid ends up on IR I would be so pissed why did we even touch him guy made all his NFL $$$$ on IR.
Jalen Hurt is my name for him.

Exactly. Signing someone to the active roster comes at significant cost - you have to keep him there for at least 3 weeks. And this is a player with a significant previous injury history, a significant previous character issue and that doesn't know your system. The chances of him being of actual use during that 3 week period are remote.

He’s got a pedigree too. Dad was an NFL DB, Isaiah was coached by Deion Sanders. He’s my binkie for steal of the draft, although DD is setting that bar high.
Bolden was one of the Pat’s official visits too. I liked him better than the Speed pick, because he’s a great return man. But also has some experience in the secondary. I look at Speed as a great addition to special teams, and a possible future backup CB.
