You said both offers were 2 years. Getting extended after 1 year doesn’t mean it was a 3 year contract, you said he left because he didn’t want to have to wait to get extended.

50 million is the cap space in 2020 and 2021 Brady would have taken up thereby reducing the cap space the team had to rebuild.

Actually it’s correct, $50 mil gtd over 2 years would likely mean 25 in cap space for both years, yet when you extended him in 21, his cap hit in 2021 goes to 10 mil. Overall, their money spent would have been virtually no different if you replaced those two with Brady

Because they had zero cap room in 2020 they would have had to structure the 2 year deal with a low first year number and a high second year number.
Probably along the lines of 13 and 37, a large chunk of which would have been bonus amort that couldn’t be pushed to the future.

So when the patriots had 60 mill in cap room in 2021 it would really have been 23 and after rookies, in season, etc they would have had about 10 to use on free agents.

That means in addition to not signing the 12 mill for those 2 they would have had to pass up 37 of the other 48 mill in cap hits they signed.
