this draft (and the player acquisition this off season) screams "I'm stubborn and talent on offense doesn't matter." let's hope this defense laden draft transforms the unit into one that can actually stop good quarterbacks... because if not we're in for a long season

This is the way the draft fell, and certainly a proven blueprint to win when you are in a division with 2 HOF QB's and 3 possible HOF WR's.

They picked up two potential stud/starters on defense in the first two rounds. While the third pick was a bit of a head scratcher, who is to say the team would have been better off with the 11th best WR or 10th best TE in that spot?

It's all a crap shoot after the first two rounds. That's why I don't understand the squawking about trading up for a 4th round kicker. Joe Cardonna was a fifth round pick. How many 4th/5th rounders stay for years?

You can only judge a draft by philosophy. NOBODY on this board really knows enough about the players to judge picks after the few couple of rounds. The idea to grab two WRs in a late round with a lot of upside, excuses passing on one earlier in my book. As Matt Groh said, TE's just flew off the board. How can people really be mad of adding kickers after last season's dismal performances?

They've put together a potential deep roster. It's missing a few parts, agreed. Next year, WR's open up, and with an OT/TE they can finish this project. In the end, everything really depends on Mac Jones. If he's a top 10 QB, this was a great draft.

I’m happy with the draft. Value wasn’t there for Tackle or WR, or rather, better value was for CB and DE.

A in addressing needs. Now its time to see how many players fill the bill.

TE can be addressed next year in what's rumored to be a loaded draft where you always get deals like Vince Wilfork. The Pats already have 2 good productive TEs in Gesicki and Henry. Drafting a TE now makes no sense because how many snaps is he actually going to get?

Oh, Ya. This Dude is ecstatic that he sat there in KC through day 1 and did not get picked. So, he went home.

But, you're the same folks that are happy that Brandon has run gas up to $5 a gallon too.

I agree the excuse that he didn’t know the pick is probably bs. It looks to me like he’s pissed he didn’t get selected earlier. Wouldn’t you be?

Btw, gas prices nationwide averaged $3.76, as of last week.

I gave it a B. Honestly? I don’t know enough about some of the guys drafted to have an informed opinion. I like the first three picks and I’m glad they got a P and a K, but after that, idk.

I did not see him round 1.

Did he have a fancy suit of clothes and jewelry? All the other guys did.

I gave it a C, but really closer to a C+. CB in round 1 was great and he will help the defense immensely. I think White will contribute this year, but will be in a rotation. We will see. The 3rd round to the 4th rounds were more like a D. Patriots need 1-2 OTs and they drafted zero. The Patriots need a TE who can at least block and they have none. Sure, maybe they will take one of those guards and put him on the field as a 6th OL, but I don't like it very much.

I do like the kicker and punter picks - those positions killed us last year.

The two WR picks were solid and I like the two developmental CB picks. Just cannot get over all the guards picked and the failure to address obvious needs.

On the bright side, we should no longer have to watch Ferentz play.

Two thoughts:

BB has been pretty consistent over the years that if he is unsure of the players available he will throw volume at it as a solution. Usually that means 2-3 potentials among: draft, FAs, UDFAs. That he threw 2 draft at IOL and 1 at C (long-term position of need) —> he believes the C will displace DA within 2 years; but is just guessing at the linemen and hoping to get one.

re: trading up for K. Remember it only takes 1of 31 to lose “your guy”. It seems obvious this is only guy BB wanted.

So here was who was between our picks:

did one of them NEED a kicker?

Foulk was mr consistency for many years. But he lost that in extra pts last 2 years; and then ‘AvailABILITY’ is now startin to change too. Some may not see as Position OF NEED, but on this one ; I’ll put on my IBWT goggles.
Green Bay drafted a kicker

The nice thing about WR Boutee is that he played against elite talent in the SEC.

BB probably got the heads up from Saban and that has panned out before with guys like BJGE and Jamie Collins.

Other LSU WRs

Jmarr Chase
Justin Jefferson
Jarvis Landry
DJ Chark
Odell Beckham

I give this draft a B. They filled some holes for the upcoming season but didn’t take care of the needs the teams has long term. Going into the draft the team needed long term answers at boundary corner, d line, center, receiver, tackle, and tight end. Going into next year’s draft the team will still need wr, tackle and tight end. Those are 3 extremely important positions of need that the Pats kicked the can down the road on.

Love the Gonzalez and the White picks. If Gonzalez can grab the cb1 role like we hope then the rest of the corners on the roster should excel in their roles under him. The Patriots viewed white as a first rounder and even tried to trade back into the end of the first to get him. White is versatile, and should be able to take snap share from both Wise and Guy. I didn’t like the Mapu pick due to who else was available (Mike Reiss suggested that the Pats were interested in Tank Dell at 76 but the Texans moved up and drafted him before). However, I do understand it. Phillips is starting to age and Mapu gives a long term replacement at the position.

I really like that the team focused on the o line on day 3, I did not like how it was all interior lineman. No more Ferentz as a back up c will be lovely. If these interior lineman hit then the Pats have a long term answer at center, plus enough depth to move a current starter to OT and help fill that hole. If Mafi or Sow can kick out to tackle then I like the draft a lot more.

Don’t mind the kicker and punter picks. For most of my fandom the Pats have drafted these specialists and not needed to worry about these positions for a long time after that. I trust that the Pats drafted guys who will be plus players at those positions for at least the next 5 years.

Boutte and Douglas were great picks imo. I’ve been complaining for a while that the Pats can’t successfully develop receivers if they don’t spend capital to draft them. After no receivers in the first 5 rounds I was happy with any investment in the position. I expect that one of the two will make the team while the other will get the foxborough flu. I don’t particularly care about their contributions this season but in the ‘24 season these picks should pay dividends.

I’m not a huge fan of the last two picks being special teams players (probably gunners) in terms of filling an immediate need. They probably would have been better off drafting a third TE with one of those picks. With all the special teams first players Bill brought in, in free agency a 3rd TE seemed to have a lot better chance of making the team and eventually contributing than Bolden and Speed.

I love that the Pats got back to drafting a ton of players. More swings of the bat means the team is more likely to hit. It is interesting they drafted so many players when they only have roster space for 3-4 more udfa. This might be the first year a udfa doesn’t make it. Although I prefer the Pats only keep two qb on the 53 it might be a lot of fun for Malik Cunningham to make the roster, mobile qbs are fun.

Very thematic draft. Funny to see the later picks dissed for positional weakness when they are here for ST. Grade: A, A+ if Boutte becomes a threat at X by mid '24.

Offense is going to be heavy run, play action, timing patterns. Scoring #13-19, but much better ToP.

ST: going to be excellent. Top 5. Impressive to watch.

D: The days of 3-4 hold the line done. Attack happy D. Also impressive. Scoring rank: #6-10.

Opportunities for salary dump/camp cut pick ups: WR, OT; Tough schedule on paper, remember experts on AFC West this time last year? 9-10 wins, 11 as likely as 8.

Congratulations on jumping the shark into an alternative universe where truth, facts and context are foreign concepts.

Keion White is late first round talent that is an elite athlete with good college production. He’s 285 lbs. and was covering a RB on a wheel route like a safety. You can’t applaud the eagles for taking nolan smith at #30 for their 4th edge & say keion white at #46 was a poor use of resources.

There are a handful of potential difference makers at DL in every draft & you take them when they are available. He’ll have a role as a rookie as an interior pass rusher & get to learn behindn judon, uche, etc. People are sleeping on this pick IMO.

Home run draft.

Never expected to land Gonzalez, so that's an A+

In the 2nd round reset thread, I said we need to trade up for Keion White, my #1 guy, because of both a huge need at DE and because he is a force that should've gone in the 1st round. Taking White was A+ for me, especially because Bergeron was gone, and I don't even know if they like Bergeron.

I'm giving them C for the drafting of Mapu and Andrews. Both players were taken a round too early. I did hear on NFL channel that several teams told the analyst they'd be taking Andrews in the 5th round, and since we didn't have a 5th rounder, an argument could be made you should take your desired center (and he was desired, since Wypler and others were still on the board) in the 4th when you have the chance. My main concern with Andrews is that inside info from Cole Popovich lead the Patriots to elevate Andrews more than he should have been. A 4th rounder for a modern day starting center in the NFL is about what I would expect. Did they get the right one?

Mapu is more of a mystery. 3rd round was way too high. He's got kind of a daffy duck running style. Weird. But they know more than me. All I know is that my favorite LB in the draft, Dayan Henley, a guy who can really cover, was still available. Is Mapu going to be a toy that sees the field 10% of the game while Henley goes on to become a perennial Pro Bowler? I think so.

I give them a B+ for the rest of the picks. I really like the idea of beefing up the interior line for flexibility and with the possibility of moving Strange or Onwenu to the tackles.

The 6th round picks are just fliers, no one knows what will become of them, though Demario Douglas might be a steal for us if he can show he's rugged in the middle of the field. He may displace Bowden and Tre Nixon. I don't expect much from Boutte. I think he might not make it out of training camp. The two big fast CBs may be thought of as Slater replacements. We'll see.

Home run draft since it accomplished 4 big things: 2 blue chippers at key defensive positions that limit opposing passing games, it shored up the offensive interior and gave us plenty of options (no more Ferentz and Murray), hopefully it locked down our kicking game for the next decade with a new punter and kicker (both of whom looked like the best in the the draft), and it increased team speed.

This draft was about team building and filling areas of need. The fact that the first 2 picks were also BPA in areas of need was a huge bonus.

I can't evaluate the tackles but I think it's telling that teams passed on Dawand Jones over and over and over again. That says something. Same for the tackles at the end of the draft like Jaelynn Duncan. Passed over repeatedly. And finally, I hope that people noticed that the Oregon LT went before some of the tackles we're talking about. And it made me wonder: if Adrian Klemm isn't even recommending the very tackles he just coached, what does that say about the tackle talent in this draft?

At WR, all the good ones were gone in the first. We had chances for Downs and Dell and the like. The one thing that caught my eye is the emphasis announcers placed on all the drops from the mid round WRs. It was comical. AT Perry a lot of drops. Boutte drops. This was a refrain.

The Pats got torched last year from big WRs and TEs vs NEs small CBs.

6 - 4 Tee Higgins 129 yards - 1 TD
6 - 2 Adam Thielen 61 yards - 1 TD
6 - 1 Justin Jefferson 139 yards - 1 TD
6 - 0 Stephon Diggs 196 yards - 2 TDs
6 - 5 Allen Lazard 116 yards - 0 TDs
6 - 5 Mark Andrews 89 yards - 2 TDs

Let's talk metrics before talking evaluation. Roughly:
  • -10% of drafted players have successful, multi year careers.
  • -1 starter out of a draft is average, 2 is good, 3 is outstanding
Setting aside the kickers, this draft has a good chance to give us two, by year two, I'd say - the two first picks.
There's a reasonable chance that one of the others will break through to become a starter by year 3, particularly on the IOL.
So it is looking good.
Injuries, as in all things NFL, will be the largest factor.

Fair grade. Close to mine, fwiw.

Hoss Juke presentation here, right after Joe’s clip above. A bit of insight on why your Olinemen have to be able to move. Pass protection duty for Koppen is really hard.

Think of this in terms of why it was so hard for Matt Patricia last year.

This video should be required viewing for everyone here as an illustration of passing game sight adjustments. Understanding what he's talking about, at least conceptually, is important to appreciating the pro game's complexity. It's akin to high-speed chess. These players have to do a ton of mental processing literally on the fly.

I have questions for some of you that think Keion White plays a position where we already have good depth.

Who are you seeing at his position other than Wise?

If Wise goes down (and Wise has had perennial injury problems here), who do we have that is 285, 3-4 DE, set the edge pass rusher?

If Wise goes down, the front line is Guy, Barmore and Godchaux. Barmore can get pressure but not if he's doubled while Guy and Godchaux are ignored.

Keion White was a huge need for this team, and he's a 1st round talent.

I too was underwhelmed by the 3rd round pick, but those of you who say we should've taken a tackle or a WR, go back and look: who would you recommend?

The 3 WRs were Jalin Hyatt, Josh Downs and Michael Wilson. The only tackle was Wanya Morris. I can certainly see an argument for Morris over Mapu. But I cant get myself worked up over passing on Hyatt (who is a Tyquan clone but much more limited) or Michael Wilson. As for Downs, he's solely a slot, he'd never see the field over JuJu, and we don't even know if he's better than Demario Douglas, who has the same size and speed attributes.

I would've gone BPA in the 3rd round instead of Mapu, and only Wanya Morris seems like a potential need pick for me (but how did the Patriots rate this kid?). I would've liked Tucker Kraft, Dayan Henley or Trenton Simpson over Mapu. 2 other defensive guys and a TE.

I just think blasting Belichick for not picking a tackle or a WR early is useless. If we wanted a tackle, we'd have taken Broderick Jones over Gonzalez. If we wanted a WR, we should've traded down from Gonzalez's spot to take one of the 4 who went 20-24.
