So he’s inconsistent and still set school record?
Career wise. He had some years where he wasn’t as consistent. I watched him in the Senior Bowl, he was 4 for 5. He missed a 52 yarder. The other kicker missed a 37 yarder.

NFL ball, NFL width goalposts. Hits from 62 & 66. Hits three kickoffs of over 70 yards and 4+ sec of hangtime. I like him more than Moody, more consistent inside 50 and cleaner technique.

The ball just sounds like a shotgun blast coming off his foot. Has a ridiculous leg, as does the punter Baringer. We are set for many years. I love how consistent Folk has been, has only missed 11 field goals total the last 3 years. But he’s also missed 11 extra points. We just have to make sure we don’t cut Ryland to try to get him on the practice squad, someone will surely steal him.

You don’t know how wrong you are. The guy has a bazooka for a leg. Just needs to work on his consistency. I’ve watched him kick 50+ yard field goals, and they hit the top of the netting, meaning they would be good from 60+. Set the all time field goal percentage at Maryland. Great on kickoffs as well. Massive leg.

Unfortunately, he’s the second most exciting Pat’s draft pick behind Gonzalez and the most exciting offensive draft pick by the Pats in the 2023 draft. Tells you how bad their draft has been overall.

You just described Rohrwasser.

Big leg, accuracy inconsistency.

Hope I’m wrong.

Didn’t love the draft in general outside of Gonzalez.

I agree with your comments in your last sentence. But he’s nothing like Rohwasser. He was always a draftable kicker. Played in the Senior Bowl. Some had Moody ahead of him, some had him ahead of Moody. This is what Mike Reiss said about Ryland:

Round 4, No. 112 overall: Chad Ryland, K,

Maryland

My take: The Patriots traded up, moving up eight spots by giving the Jets a fourth-rounder (120) and sixth-rounder (184). This pick has shades of the selection of Stephen Gostkowski in 2006, meaning that the team doesn't pick a kicker in the fourth round unless it has high confidence that it is ready to pass the torch at the position. Ryland is known for his big leg, which also means he could handle kickoffs. While veteran Nick Folk is under contract for 2023, it's hard to imagine he beats out Ryland for the job, barring something unexpected.

As best as I can figure, the Pats traded up to get ahead of GB for Ryland. The Packers were just ahead of our next pick in the 4th round and had a need at kicker, seeing as how the Packers drafted a kicker in the 6th round.

Personally, I saw kicker as a need, as I don't think we can rely on Nick Folk much longer.

Nick Folk is the oldest player on the entire roster. He’ll be 39 this season. His leg is too weak to handle kickoffs, he struggles to consistently make field goals beyond 40 yards.

You can really gauge the clueless “fantasy football is the same as real football” fans among us who complain about drafting arguably the best kicking prospect in the 4th round. Last I checked scoring was pretty important.

The Pats had 12 draft picks, you only roster one kicker… having one is pretty important. You’ll remember that in the final seconds if this kid is clutch in booting game winners from 40+ yards. Just silly…

I think they liked Moody better, and I think San Fran knew that too. San Fran had a bunch of picks at the end of the third and we had a bunch scattered through the 4th, so the 49ers used one of their last 3rds on Moody. I think the Pats liked Ryland, too, but the drop off to the next kicker was too great, so they decided to use a high 4th to get Ryland before the Packers did. Whether the Pack would have drafted Ryland that high is anyone’s guess, but the Pats seemed to not want to risk it.

I don’t get the argument about the last kicker we drafted not working out, Rowlfafer or whatever his name was. Because we missed on him and Folk is getting older, I think it necessitated us drafting another kicker. Just because one draft pick doesn’t work doesn’t mean you never draft that position high again. (Except WR apparently j/k)

Tired of watching other teams have knickers who consistently make them from over 50 with room to spare. About time we had one too.

He has to be our kicker for the next 10 years

Yes it took more draft capital than everyone expected, but we ALL knew we were bringing in a kicker. Folk has been pretty good but he is up there and for some weird reason cannot do kickoffs despite the fact he has the leg to kick 50 yard field goals. So whatever and hopefully he makes the roster unlike the previous nazi.

I'm thinking that the Patriots probably had two draftable kickers on the board, and once Moody went at the end of Round 3, they figured they had better be aggressive in terms of making sure they got the other one.

I like the player, don't love the draft slot. No one will care if he's consistently kicking touchbacks and booming 50+ yard FGs.

As an aside, the construction at Gillette will probably make kicking there at least a bit easier.
I went to the Revs game on Saturday, that scoreboard is HUGE. The scoreboard itself covers up the open wind pattern. I think kicks will be a ton easier on that side going forward.
