PFT: Bill "has shopped" Mac

Perry is right. We rarely hear rumors about the Pats trying to trade away or for a player that ever comes out to be true or at least into fruition. We hear about rumors of trade interest by the Pats all the time that never happens.

Bill tried to trade Gronk after the 2017 season and Gronk confirmed it.

I don’t care who we have at QB. I just want stability and a plan. All this uncertainty and constant drama gets old really ****ing quick. If Bill doesn’t want Mac, he hasn’t done anything to put the pieces into place that would suggest so. I’d be very surprised.

The constant drama is outside the building. P Perry said the report was "stunning on many levels". Translation = unlikely and does not fit historical patterns = drama.

At the same time, Bill hasn't done much to suggest he does want Mac to be his QB. You can sort of point to the hiring of BOB, but the team needed an OC regardless so he may have likely hired BOB whether Mac was rostered or not.

A point Florio made on a podcast yesterday which rings true - if Bill thinks a QB is his starter, he makes it pretty damn clear. He scoffed and rolled his eyes and chastised reporters for years when people suggested Brady should be benched for Garoppolo. In the Cam Newton year, he clearly stated at every opportunity that Cam is the QB. You can kind of see Bill taking a somewhat similar approach last offseason putting praise on Mac, but during the season that completely disappeared and he has very purposefully chosen not to say Mac is their guy and that this offseason will be a competition. I really don't think Bill believes in him at the moment.

I don’t doubt for a second it’s true, to what extent who the heck really knows. These reports aren’t just being pulled out of peoples butts or thin air, there’s something behind them.

Or Bill believes in both Mac and Bailey, both might turn out to be NFL QBs, and BB is being honest that it is a competition. It is a performance league. That does not mean Bill only supports one or the other. Being a competition does not mean one is bad and one is good. What about both being good? And Bill likes and supports both? I think Bill always liked JG, but there was not a competition, and Bill was clear about that.

I support Mac and think Mac will be great, but Zappe looked good and I understand why fans like Zappe. I like both and think both should have a fair shot.

If Bill Belichick was thinking of Lamar Jackson, or even of bringing back JImmy G, he would have been horribly negligent to not go out and discern what he might be able to get for Mac Jones in a trade.
If it's going to cost 2 1st-round picks for Lamar, but Mac would bring back a high-second, for example, there's a bit of an offset. You need to know the offsets in a business decision like this. That doesn't make it personal.

I mention this because, given the conflicting reports, it sounds like maybe BB tried to gauge any market that would be out there for Mac Jones. It could be simply that, business. Few think Mac is as good as Lamar (he's not - not even close at this point, but we'll see). Kraft is clearly getting itchy - he doesn't like losing. He wants to be in the conversation in January and February (unlike the Red Sox ownership).

Lamar could do that. Maybe even JImmy G - or at least, the Jimmy G BB apparently loves.

Boston sports provocateurs get their hands on a casual whisper and it turns into OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!! Because that's what they d

I think this gets resolved prior to the draft one way or another.

You can't compare Mac in year three to Brady in year 15... that's an absurd comparison.

Mac hasn't proven anything beyond he can play in this league, he certainly hasn't shown the ability to be dominate and win meaningful games in the postseason.

Regardless of whether Mac gets traded or not, I think the QB job was an open competition this preseason. Until one QB separates himself from the pack, you keep bringing young QB's in and keep the competition open. He doesn't have to say "Mac is the man," that's not good for the team or even the player. Mac has to earn that position, not have it handed to him.

I don't agree. I think people greatly exaggerate stuff for personal gain (clicks and talking points). I think it was made up out of mostly thin air. The Raiders and Bucs say they have had no discussions about Mac.

Both those GMs used to work for Bill do you think they would go against him?

Good article by Karen.

it's well written

but it's still doing the same thing as everyone else.....basing the trade speculation on Florio's one contact, and going from there.....it's still all speculative dot connecting from there

Speculation...not buying it.

They have no reason to say anything if talks happened. I don't kiss my old bosses ass. Do you?

"It is what it is" - slap "Patriots" on there and watch the clicks roll in
