Patriots Player Departure Meyers to LV Raiders

Tell me, capt. hyperbole, in what league where they ranked last?
I knew someone was going to say something like this and yes, I posted that without looking it up, but we were a terrible offense last year. Even in 2021 we were average and 2020 we were awful. Were we ranked 32 any of those years? Probably not. Were we a terrible offense probably in the bottom 5 last year? I’d be surprised if we weren’t.

Very much mid pack. I know we've talked about it before, but they are a long way away from worst, or laughingstock, or any other hyperbolic adjective you want to give them. They are middle of the road. Vanilla. nothing special. Exactly what 8-9 says they are.

this is SUPPOSED to be a savvy analyst who is signaling "it's ALL over" one day BEFORE FA begins. There is still SIX more months before the season starts and rosters are fixed.

Jacobi got the deal he deserved and landed in a place where he'll be appreciated. I'm really happy for him. My gut feeling was he needed to be gone before this offense can evolve. Maybe a Barios might BE a better option in the slot because he is quicker and can get YAC. Maybe its some other guy. MAYBE its KBourne. or a draft pick or an UDFA like Meyers was. Who knows. at THIS point.

God, such drama queens
Yes an honest question would elicit pearl clutching from the homers but to state that our most productive and consistent receiver over the last few years needs to leave for our offense to get better is asinine. Now we are going to go back to a guy we cut in favor of either the guy we just let walk, Jakobi, or another guy who couldn’t even play receiver, Gunner? Yeah I’m sure that will get us evolving!

Kyed’s main point is what Is the plan? Seems like a more than fair question to ask after some of the personnel moves the last few years. Don’t let that upset you too much though.

As a team they are middling to mediocre but at least last year the offense was downright bad.

The Patriots had 2 wins where the defense allowed more than 15 points. And in both those games it was only due to a TD in the last 2 min of the 4Q.

Meanwhile they had 3 wins where the opponent scored 3 or fewer points.

The offense was putrid last year.

Statistically, it wasn't. 17th points per game. Pretty much every category is middle of the road. They are what their record says they are.

Not too bad news, keeps open possibility they have (will have to have) bigger WR fish to fry..
I think this misses the mark. Even with Meyers, they need a true WR1. Now they still need a WR1 and a replacement for Meyers (which is a 800+ yard receiver). They also have to fill the TE2 void (which Jonnu sucked at so let's get someone decent this time). This offense has gapping holes to fill.

The upside here is that *WITH* Meyers signing for 3/33.....it devalues other FA's like Smith-Schuster, Lazard, Chark, etc...

We could end up signing 2-3 guys to go along with Thorton, a rookie or two, & plus a trade?

I don't disagree, but I am trying to talk 203 off the ledge that they were the worst in the league. They weren't.

does that include the defensive tds?
Probably. Every category I click on was having them ranked in the 20's, with the exception of points. Again, just pointing out that they aren't the worst. They are mid-pack, which, unsurprisingly, is where they pick in the draft.

You asked for names.

I don't think Meyers is "special". I think he's a fine player, but he should be replaceable with a multitude of the FAs out there. Everyone and his brother wants this team to become more dynamic, they want legit playmakers at WR1, and then we all lose our mind when they have a middle of the road guy, one who can't find the end zone with a GPS, leaves. I dunno man, maybe we should wait and see what they bring in. I like Meyers, but he is not a dynamic play maker. He's not Troy Brown, Jules or Welker, either. I would like him to stay, but he's out. Let's see what they do.
I mean, I've said this countless times: I want a #1 playmaker too.

Who do you suggest?

In the meantime we lost our possession guy and don't have a replacement, even though you named some guys who have never been as productive as him, and who have bounced around from team to team, despite playing with HOF QBs.

I really can’t imagine what it would be like to watch one of the offenses in the 30 range if that’s the case. What we saw last year was painful and to think there’s a decent amount that we’re worse is wild.

Average Troy Brown season with the Patriots after he became a starter in 2000: 60 catches for 648 yards, 3 TDs. Average Jakobi Meyers season with the Patriots after he became a starter in 2020: 70 catches for 800 yards, 3 TDs. Meyers has also missed less games due to injury and their targets per 17 games rate are very similar (Troy Brown 107 targets/17, Meyers 114 targets/17).
Not only was it a different league back then in terms of the number of offensive plays, defensive penalties... but Troy Brown was one of the best return men in the game. He played special teams well and made clutch plays at the biggest moments. Not really a comparison at all...

Difference is other than the QB we did have prime Gronk at the time. This team needs to help Mac as much as it can.

I get why some are upset by this, that’s why I compared to how pissed I was when Belichick just let Welker walk for next to nothing. However, by the time the off-season was done they ended up in better shape at receiver overall. And my only point here is that I will wait until they are done making moves to pass judgement on how they either upgraded the team or not. They have cleared off a good deal of cap room, and I doubt they are just going to sit on it. If the rumors about Kraft being pissed off at the offensive performance are accurate then you would have to believe that there will be some significant moves to come. We will see what happens?
