Hunter Henry's Future Appears Safe

My one issue with Henry is he's not really great when it comes to fighting for the extra yards and getting to the sticks. Hoping having O'Brien here will help him focus in on some of those types of issues.

Nice get Darnell Washington and Bob can run a real Two TE Set.

I thought H Henry's blocking left a lot to be desired.

Also started to get a little more productive later in the season, with two of the longest plays of the year coming down the stretch:

Hopefully, we'll see him utilized more this season and O'Brien will do some things to help him take the next step as a player.

Henry is solid, but his contract is up after next year & we got Jonnu Smith for 2 more years at a pretty penny.

I think back to Belichick drafting, Graham, Watson, Gronk & Hernandez & I wonder if he will get a TE early. Mayer is a solid prospect and Musgrave & Kincaid both look like they got talent.

The fact Jonnu Smith will be the highest or one of our highest paid is not a good thing so hopefully BOB will be able to mix him in enough to contribute something

I agree, we have needs at other positions, I just think Patriots every time I see a TE in the draft with talent.

Maybe i am still going through Gonk withdrawals

Henry has been fine. He's 10th in total contract value and 1/2 of what Walker is paid who HH has outperformed.

I expect he'll be used more this year - especially if Meyers leaves

HH was a disappointment in 2022 no doubt... I expected more... But framed within the offensive sputtering that was plaguing the team, its understandable... He is the better part of the tight end duo that came aboard in 2021... Imo he should be extended this year; and unless he shows substantial improvement, Smith should be gone for the 2024 campaign...

Henry is not a Gronk/Coates level TE, but he is a good tight end... 2021 showed he can be productive... he's a piece the offense should keep around for the next few years... Extend him now, we can reset that 15 million dollar cap hit, it would be worth it...

Hunter Henry led the entire NFL in TE touchdowns in 2021. He has been one of the best TE's in the league since he entered the league. His only bugaboo has been injury and he has been an ironman for the Patriots. The idea we would cut him is outright dumb, they should extend him slightly if anything.

Either we admit that coaching matters and stop judging our 2022 weapons in a vacuum, or we go back to watching a sport like Golf where the competition is against the course itself. Weapons don't throw to themselves.

Im happy if thats true. Youd save money by cutting him but then it creates another hole.

The Pats are also loaded with cap space... how about we cut everyone then we can have all the salary cap?

I mean, we won't have players or a team... but who cares.

Sounds like a plan

I wish they could rewrite Henry's contract and extend him.
Almost as much as I wish they could rewrite Jonnu's and delete it.

I understand the temptation to cut a player for $10M savings and then pencil in two $20M per year players for the same $10M cap hit this year. We’ve all been there, even though that’s not really how things work. Although, I’ll admit it’s perfect if you have inside knowledge that the NFL and/or the world will end prior to the 2024 season when the total cap hit for those two contracts jumps from $10M to somewhere around $45M.

Somewhere I read the reason they rewrote Smith and not Henry last year was because HH wants FA, and didn't want to rewrite.

I've read that Henry wants to test FA again.
We'll see, if Obie is great at his job, if the Pats have another great offseason and draft... they'll have success and Henry might want to stick around. Either way his deal is not hampering them now.

I don't know if it's just money or the way things went, but it doesn't sound like they will get a team friendly extension this year, which is the only way these things seem to come down.
