Assuming this is accurate, it changes everything. They could cut him, negotiate a pay cut, or trade him to a team that negotiates a pay cut.

Yes, they restructured his contract last year which would increase the dead money if they cut him this year. That doesn’t matter. They can just restructure somebody else this year to get to the same end result.

They got Mahomes and Reid. They’ll just promote Nagy back to OC. The offense will still be great.
I don’t think it matters who Chiefs OC is, similar to Pats DC.

The main question is what happens in future years if they hold onto him?

He's worth $3.6m they'd gain in cap space, but if this hamstrings them well into the future, I can't possibly see how they hold onto him at all.

Great question. Also BOB might use him well.

Mac's a good QB that got put in a Bad situation last season by his future hall of fame head coach... it's illogical to move him as there is no QB available out there that could come in this organization and conform as he has done.. before you name options think about how it is to play for this franchise... just my thoughts..

@mgteich or any of the posters here with salary cap expertise…..assuming that McCourty retires, can they claw back some cap space if he is willing to work with them, like Brees did for the Saints when he retired?

They can clawback some cap space if McCourty agrees to pay back some of his signing bonus due to his retirement. That’s the $9.7m dead cap charge.

Here’s the choice: He currently has a $17.2m cap charge in 2023, and if they cut him prior to 2024 they have a $6.4m dead money charge in 2024 (still a large net savings overall against the 2024 cap if he’s cut, of course). That’s $23.6m in total cap charges if he plays for the Patriots in 2023, spread out over 2 seasons. If they cut him prior to March 17, the Patriots have $12.8m in dead money charges in 2023 and nothing in 2024 (and a net savings of $3.6m against the cap in 2023). So the comparison really is the $23.6m versus $12.8m. Is he worth the extra $10.8m in total cap charges you’d get by keeping him this year?

Me, I say no, dump him now.

Yes, if McCourty is retiring then they’ll almost definitely sign him for the minimum salary and then process the retirement in June. That pushes a bunch of the cap hit to 2024.

Don't understand the rush to rid themselves of him... Hope his 2023 is better than his 2022 was.
Me neither, he was a nice WR option to have unlike algalor he fought for the ball in his opportunities..

That tells me a Rookie WR or Two is coming in I heard the Patriots' are enamored with WR Zay Flowers I hoper after a Trade Down.

I'd rather try to sign his healthier, more productive but also more expensive teammate Darius Slayton... Shepherd's somebody you sign for the one-year, non-guaranteed vet minimum at the start of TC because you need bodies.

What mash unit S Shepard has been recently buyer beware vet min $$$ type.
