Counting the minutes to Peter King picks this up and starts petitioning Goodell for a response.

Big deal. I'm counting the minutes before the IRS sees it!

In the meantime: "The early bird gets the worm".

........but what about the "early worm"??????????

He's running a bit late this morning.

Re: Locker room antics, cash awards & late fines for Patriots players-interesting arti

It is right to sanction someone who is late for work, but as an early bird never received anything for always being early..

Exactly! That's why I thought players in NY *****ing over Tom Coughlin's rules regarding their being on time was complete BS.

I've always been early to every meeting, practice, or anything else involving the team or any job I've had. The rule I've always lived by is that you should be at least 30 minutes early for anything team/job related, and I can't understand these jacka$$es who are making multi-millions complaining about having to be on time. Really, people who are late all the time sicken me, as they have no excuse. Yea, once in a while maybe if something comes up, but some people are late all the time, and that's simply not called for.

Dan Marino and Don Shula are accusing Tedy B of "running up the pot".

Excellent...next step is to tie this to Nutrisystem somehow.

Re: Locker room antics, cash awards & late fines for Patriots players-interesting arti

Out of curiosity ... what NFL policy/rule was violated here?

Three guesses:

A. The magnitude or frequency of the fines (ouch)
B. The fact that some players MAKE money from them. That could be construed as extra pay (even though the team's total pay is unchanged).
C. The bounty aspect to how the money is dispersed.

Probably C. It's tough to say players are wrong to give each other money, UNLESS there's some rule-breaking context (gambling would be a bigger example).

Re: Locker room antics, cash awards & late fines for Patriots players-interesting arti

No rules are being broken. I don't think the league has anything to say about players managing their own fines.

I pretty sure the rule the Packers broke was incentive based

I think the writer made a bad comparison

Pot in New England Locker Room

This COULD be why your players take less than market value for their services.

This could be HUGE boys, look out!

as someone else said, the concern is that this kind of thing could be used to circumvent the salary cap.

for an extreme example, say Belichick promised Brady $1m for every TD he threw as a "lockerroom incentive", just like Asante just got. but this never got reported to the NFL or on the official books. that's a problem.

the 'rule' being broken is probably just the one required teams to classify all income/incentives/ under the salary cap

This is the violation -- Clubs and players are prohibited from offering or accepting bonuses to a player for his or his team's performance against a particular team, a particular opposing player, or players or a particular group of an opposing team.

In other news, Ricky Williams was spotted sprinting north on I-95, mumbling something about "the promised land"

But aren't these "incentives" or "fines" or whatever really coming from other players contracts? What they're really doing is shifting money around under the cap which is legit unless they are bringing significant (i.e. $1mill) from an outside source like Bob Kraft.

I think from a union standpoint it does sort of undermine the rules for maximum fines if players in the locker room are piling on fines at levels that exceed what the team is allowed to charge.

Obviously this isn't the type of case that worries those who put in place the rules but you have to have set standards for fines otherwise individual players can get screwed by teams fining them ridiculous amounts in the last year of their contracts or whatever to recoup.

Yeah they have the same rule in other sports too. Didn't Torii Hunter or someone from the Twins get fined and have to return a case of Cristal that someone offered him if he played well against another team last year?

Is it against NFL policy to use stickers on helmets? I'd be interested to see how many little Pat Patriot stickers certain players ended up with on their helmet at the end of the season.

I personally think it does NOT violate the spirit of the rule you cited. (And maybe not even the letter, but the NFL will probably say it does because it would look bad not to.)

The rule specifically mentions "a particular opposing player or players or a particular group". That's the typical well-known "bounty", and that is NOT what the Patriots' situation represents. Look at the Packers situation -- that is a typical bounty, and completely different.

The "this rule is being broken" people will point to "bonuses for his or his team's performance", but if you think about the possible bonuses that covers and is likely meant to prohibit, a reward for the first turnover is among the most benign. My guess is people on most teams would say there's nothing wrong with it.

In the end, though, the NFL is unlikely to say "that's OK, Patriots", and the pot will be converted into an end-of-season party fund on the Pats and 20 other teams.
