Mayo negotiations + OC interviews next week

That's an interesting take. But think about this . what Bill needs right now is proven stable EXPIERENCED guy,who knows the langue and offense . A plug and play guy for the next few years. Let the NEXT HC bring in "the latest cool thing ".
All our Offensive players were chosen with a variation of the system always used in mind. Different players have different strengths and better suited for different systems . Hence we had some great players that would go somewhere else and s*ck because they don’t fit that system. That is why they got labeled “ A system guy”. The right player sometimes is better than the best player.
So are we to go to a new system just because we made a successful system a cluster f#*k last year experimenting and hope our guys adapt. And then have to overhaul most of our personal to fit it. Or find the best candidate to run it.
I choose the latter.

I think BoB is a shoo in for the job and they are just checking off the Rooney requirements right now. Although, some of the Rooney candidates could impress during their interviews (Klemm and McCardell).

And could we add Josh Boyer back to the defense in some capacity? I thought he did well in Buffalo last week.....

The continuity approach may well be the right one. I've always thought so, just wondering if maybe it's not anymore. One thing that drove me nuts this year is I feel like Bill coached as if it were the Pats teams of the past. We played very conservative figuring the other teams would make mistakes, but we were typically the ones making them. It seemed to me we needed to gamble more because we weren't the better team, but we kept playing it straight up. [time to let this go, ha]

Not sure if that's the case. He was the Steelers OL coach last year and left with 2 games to go because he got hired as Oregon's asst. HC and OL coach
I was just speaking hypothetically. Who knows if it would actually happen.

@venecol I can’t quote your fake Bill text post because it’s all in quote boxes, but just wanted to tell you that I laughed quite a bit at that. The “Thanks Bill” gets me every time.

That, and I think the NFL is different than the typical working world. These guys are always moving around trying different jobs getting fired and rehired, plus they make decent money and I think BOB has made enough to retire on when he wants to leave the game.

From my big comfy couch thought Gronk & Develin were pretty good.. the Pats have a history of not having premier WR's on their teams, remember the days of the smurfs?? Six SB's later I might deduce they were pretty good...
the route running/timing/ not looking for the ball did not happen in this amount on their previous teams (otherwise they wouldn't have gotten such contracts) so why happened it here? Coaching

That is what bothered me the most about this year…the mistakes. Running into the punter twice, badly timed fumbles, the lateral pass/fumble/interception, holding calls on the offense, bad ST coverages, Mac’s interceptions early in the season, delay of game on the offense, getting a punt blocked, etc….

That **** needs to be cleaned up. I am OK with a few OL penalties cuz holding happens on almost every play….PI calls too…or tipped interceptions by our receivers…(not balls tipped at the LOS by the opponent’s D) but the ST errors and the fumbles can be coached away, IMO.

It's been 3 years of these errors though.

That's a reasonable take. However, we saw that Bill was trying to implement something different during the offseason and beginning of the season. It didn't work out but he tried. I think Bill realized that dinking and dunking for 75 yards required error free performance and wouldn't be a match once you fell behind the likes of BUF, KC, CIN, or MIA. He wanted the offense to be more explosive w/ YAC. Maybe he also realized that Mac was no Brady, for who the schemes were developed for 20 years.

Bill drafted players more suitable for his tweaks (Thornton, Strong, Strange), eliminated the FB, and already had Bourne who came from a similar system. Parker is who he is. Henry experienced some of this in his last season w/ Herbert. Smith worked in a Shanahan-like scheme his last year w/ the Titans. Even Mac had experience with RPOs & inside / outside zone running plays. OL needs fixing anyway, so bring in players w/ experience in those schemes. That's the bulk of our existing O personnel.

Imo, it made sense to bring in someone that had experience with what Bill was trying to do. Someone that could efficiently implement his goals and add a layer of his own creativity. BOB is a solid coach but not known as an innovator.

Finally, there's the future. Is the team commited to moving forward w/ a 20+ yo playbook even after Bill is gone? Or does the team begin a transition that can be readily picked up by the next HC?

I'm sure O'Brien is the next OC. I just wish we would've gone w/ someone more innovative but they didn't interview anyone w/ experience.

Maybe more interviews are taking place?

If BOB is the guy, can they bring Jefferson on as WR coach? I'd think since Kingsbury was canned the Cardinals wouldn't mind.
As long as McCardell, Jefferson and Klemm don't join BFlo's class action suit, I would take a look at all of them for position roles.

Great outlook. Was the system at Alabama much different before BOB got there and Mac was the QB.
Just wondering if the system BOB used recently at Bama and probably will have a similar system here be in Mac‘s wheelhouse. Or was the system different?

I think they would wait till the begining of next week to announce BOB. That way it look‘s like a fair process having that weekend buffer. I am also sure that a wink wink nod nod is happening behind the scenes.
But you never know. Lot’s of variables

My understanding is BOB wasn't brought in to change anything, just to run it but that's not what we run here.

Mayo is the future head coach of the NEP.

He has made Uche, a predominantly third down passing specialist who in college couldn’t crack into the starting lineup until his last year, into an every down defender.

Bentley enjoyed a strong season, perhaps his best.

And that poor player in Detroit has become…adequate. Tavai isn’t so bad anymore notwithstanding his physical limitations in pass coverage.

It’s the opposite of Nick Caley. Mayo took thin gruel and made a delicious stew.

No wonder the Krafts drew a line in the sand. Bill, you’re going to have to surpass Shula in another organization if you insist on keeping Stevie the de facto game day DC. Or you can name Mayo DC and your successor.

At 70 starting over isn’t in the cards. And he’s already given his sons a wonderful resume to build off.
