They legally can not.

There must be all kinds of issues we are not aware of. Are the stadiums and broadcasting available if everything pushes back a week? Can't imagine they can push the Super Bowl back a week. Pushing things back seems like a logistics nightmare - they have to deal with one game, maybe two.

So the Pats finally catch a scheduling break with the Bills having one less rest day and then this tragedy occurs. One possible outcome is the Bills don't play this week at all essentially giving them a week of rest prior to playing NE.

This has been one fecked up season.

Hoping for a full recovery for that young man.

You really think the Bills are “resting” right now? Really?

If the Pats are moved to Monday and somehow the Steelers/Phins/Titans lose and KC wins then you could be looking at a scenario where our game is canceled because it means nothing anyway.
That would give an unfair advantage to pats. Essentially an unearned bye week

Not a lot to talk about. I am sure Bill is keeping everyone moving forward and getting ready for 1pm Sunday until the NFL announces a schedule change. At that point, they'll make adjustments and move forward.

Regarding the games, it seems like the most likely outcome is proceed with week 18 as scheduled, and once that's concluded, consider if the Bills-Bengals is even necessary (which it probably will be but there may be some scenario where the seeding is solidified), then possibly reschedule it for next Thursday, and push back by a day or two any resulting wild card games that either are involved in. Or have the Bills-Bengals play either 1/14 or 1/15 and push the playoffs back one week (which would condense the Super Bowl wait from two weeks to one).

That makes sense.

At this point I think the logical solution is to play this weekend's games and then see if the Bengals-Bills outcome has any more meaning than simply to ID which one is a 2 seed and which one is a 3 seed. If that's all that is riding on it, do a coin flip for the seeding slots and keep the playoffs on schedule.

edit: crawhammer said the same thing, never mind!

In 2001 they had basically the entire season to handle the logistics - with a month to go it's damn near impossible.

Dropping / moving the Pro Bowl, however - maybe not as tough.

If you want to quantify any advantage of disadvantage on what happened then I can't think of anything more distracting than a teammate dying literally in game and having to be revived.

We don't even know if this man is gonna make a recovery or not so really I don't think it's the Pats who are at a disadvantage in the scenario that's unfolding.

Its true and you are right. A man’s life is at stake so really no one should care too much about a scheduling advantage or disadvantage.
Its meaningless in the big picture

Yes. They are not playing, practicing, or training. It's not a fun rest, but ya their bodies are definitely getting rest.

Thank you.

Every game counts. If it doesn't affect seeding, it'll affect a team's draft position.

For the Bills and Bengals it doesn't effect draft position. Both will be slotted into the draft based on the outcome their postseasons.

If both teams lose in the first round, it will affect their draft position...the higher seeded team would get the lower pick. Also, even if the Chiefs get the 1 seed after this weekend, cancelling the Bills-Bengals game affects who gets the 2 seed and 3 seed.

True draftnik thinking right there. Sheesh. A guy might be knocking on heaven's door, which is more important that the actual playoffs... but WAIT! It's not more important than a shift of a spot or two up or down in next year's draft (in the high 20s)!
