Game Day Thread Official Post Game Thread- Pats beat the Colts

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

Good morning everyone, getting you ready for the next few days on a bye week:

Cleaning up the Patriots notebook, like only Reiss can: some really interesting points he makes about the offense and O-line and who he would play going forward. Been a lot of discussion about the O-line on here:

On toucher and rich they are breaking down the offense. And It might be Ted Johnson but they are saying the offensive play calling is basically just so bad it doesn't give the offense any chance of success. And the OL has regressed massively.

Apparently players were frustrated that the colts were calling out their plays because there is no creativity. But that's what you get when you have two guys who have no business calling offense as your offensive guys.

I'm surprised how for some reason Patricia and Judge are getting a pass for this on this board. As if we don't have basically the same talent as last year we had with mcDaniels. Only thing changed is coaching.

Brown is better But there are still 2 positions to fill here. why force the switch to hopefully make LT marginally better when it can potentially weaken rt drastically? If it aint broke dont try to fix it. They may well have ended up manufacturing this issue because as you mentioned players can struggle with the switch, which is exactly what ended up happening. here we are at week 9 and rt has yet to be solidified. Even brown who’s been mostly good still has had a couple bad games at LT whereas i cant remember any major issues last year at RT.
Historically I would say ,%95-99 of the time teams put their best tackle on the blindside. I think it's a total hindsight move to be critical of this one. Wynn sux and had been regressing before Matty P I'm not blaming him for that.

Agreed its ideal to have the best tackle on the blindside. Just not sure it was worth the risk here. Still hopeful on cadjuste, reiss didn’t seem too impressed with him in the take above but i thought he was fine in the 2nd half.

A great write up below by Lazar, with excellent points:

Other Quick-Hit Film Notes from Patriots-Colts
  • The Pats ought to give Rhamondre Stevenson the game ball after every win for keeping the offense afloat this season. He has gained 126 rushing yards after contact over the last two games to give them some semblance of a running game. A stud every week.
  • The tight ends are grossly underutilized in the passing game right now, which we already knew. But the fact that they don't try to work the seams against these single-high structures is frustrating. They are passing up big play after big play.
  • This is what "all 11" to the ball in the running game looks like by the Patriots defense. Outstanding physicality, technique on the line of scrimmage, gap discipline, and reads from the off-ball guys. A dominant effort by the D-Line, in particular.
  • As Devin McCourty said after the game, the Pats are starting to diversify their coverage structures and spin the dial on the quarterback with different safety alignments. They threw a lot at Ehlinger, who was completely lost.
  • Vintage Lawrence Guy game. Absorbing doubles, standing up single blocks, taking on pullers at the point of attack, occupying blocks in the pass rush. Still a stout, sturdy IDL.
  • Could watch Mathew Judon run T/E stunts all day long. Perfect timing, disguise, and explosiveness on his first two sacks. He even got held on the second one and still got the sack. The refs missed it.
  • The Pats used Mack Wilson as a spy in man coverage on Ehlinger, which allowed their four-man rushes to go after the Colts QB. Wilson has carved out a nice role on passing downs, mainly in the rush as an interior blitzer and spy. But he'll occasionally start off the ball and play in a low hole where he can help in man coverage, too. Exactly what they needed in the passing game. Let's see how it holds up vs. Josh Allen.
  • The secondary did a great job of avoiding picks/rubs by staggering themselves at different levels, and the help defenders also did their jobs. Fascinated to see this group against an elite passing offense. They've been better than expected and play on a string. Truly make you beat them one-on-one rather than giving it up easily.
  • Devin McCourty had great reps in coverage leveraging routes from single-high and two-high safety shells. Could tell he had a feel for what Indy was doing.
  • The blocked punt was a great design by special teams coordinator Cam Achord. With two returners deep, the Pats rotated the jammer at the snap (Peppers replaced Jones) and overloaded the protection. Neat play design executed to perfection.

News flash Rham is our best offensive player it's probably going to look very predictable when we run with him. Teams are keying in on it. We still need to be able to call them and be successful and as long as we aren't trailing I don't have a problem with predictable first down runs.

It's not like they don't want to, I think it's an issue with mac

Definitely an issue. It's how defenses know what's coming. He can't run PA so when he's under center they know it's probably a run and in shotgun right now is not an ideal thing for running because the OL up the middle without Andrews and with a rookie isn't the most ideal thing. Andrews is a probably a top 5-8 Center in run blocking. Offense missing him a lot right now especially his ability to call out and pick up run blitzes.

Any open lane you've seen the last couple weeks up the middle probably was because of Onwenu.

Mac was great with play action last year. Everyone wants to ignore the elephant in the room. That is Patricia and Judge. Not a single team in the league would have them running the offense.

It wasn't by much but I hought both were upgrades at LG and RT. And creates some options to decide on for best 5 coming out of the bye.
Don't touch LT, RG, or Center. Brown, Onwenu, and Andrews offer us a good deal of hope this can be resolved.

LG I think with Andrews back we can still go with Strange who I think his strength is getting exposed next to Ferrentz. Wynn is clearly stronger and if they think it's a real issue they may just go with Wynn. I think either option can work next to Andrews.

RT lots of options I think the key here is getting the other 4 slots right because I don't think any of the 3 options are good. Cannon is not the same but probably the best of the 3 at RT. Wynn is probably the best of the 3 except at RT where he seems to struggle maybe that settles if the other 4 do. Cajuste played slightly better than Wynn Sunday but that's one game and he hasn't been very healthy either. Cajuste does still provide more potential to improve.

I think I'd go Brown, Strange, Andrews, Onwenu, Cajuste. And I might just go Wynn at LG but I don't want to bench the rook yet but the experience might be the way to go.

Great hustle by JJ here off the fumble by KB. Another interesting story line will be the wr depth chart going forward. I expect Parker to be back soon, but does this fumble and the bad game by KB slide him down the depth chart even more?

Yeah id still wanna see strange struggle with andrews back in there before making any real changes there. He was doing well before the jets game.

He was over matched with top quality opponents, Williams of Jets and Buckner of Colts/

Yeah, im sure hes not the only guard to have trouble with them. On top of not having andrews for those 2 games

Do you really think that Patricia and Judge are doing whatever they want with impunity? Really?

Every game plan on offense is approve and probably design by Bill.

Even if it is not then it’s a bad look either way.

Either Bill participate in the elaboration of the offensive gameplan and he is either too stupid to come up with a good gameplan for Mac in 6 games or he is the GOAT coach and the game plan is dictated by Mac’s limitation this year and with his lack of field vision they don’t want Mac to turn his back to defense and they want him to see the field at all time.

Or Bill let Patricia and Judge do whatever they want and it’s a bad look on him for doing nothing for 6 weeks. Do we really believe that Bill the control freak, will let Patricia and Judge burn his 1st round QB to the ground without doing nothing for 6 weeks? I don’t believe that for a second.

How many mediots have to say the playcall is lacking compared to last year before people can call out Patricia/judge.

It's not like we are calling out some offensive genius. We get it you want zappe.

Doesn't excuse the piss poor playcalling and offense. Running a zone run for a 5 yard loss at the colts best defender or verticals when you have 2 seconds to throw is bad playcalling. Doesn't matter who is behind center.

Has Mac been good? No but to put it all on him and absolve coaching is a disservice to fit a narrative.

We beat two garbage defensive teams when everything went right. Good job Patricia/judge. How did zappe do against a real defense in the bears? Was exposed

The issue is that they still ran up the middle on first down with JJ in there.

Who takes mediots seriously?
There's too many other factors in recent weeks to blame MP or JJ. It's BB's offense first of all, not his assistant coach's. They've been missing Parker and Andrews the past 2 weeks vs very stout defenses - e.g. the Bills and Allen had a worse day against the Jets than we did. Also, we won both games with a game plan that prioritized defense, field goals and low-risk offense. The offense will improve.

Patricia and Judge are only doing what Bill told them to do. So on your account Bill is letting Patricia calling plays that don’t work for 6 straight game with Mac and calling plays that work for 2 games with Zappe?

Has been Patricia good? No but put it all on him and absolve the level of play of the QB is a disservice to fit a narrative.

In every game that Mac played this year despite the bad OL, the bad coaching staff, he left a lot plays on the field.

It’s not a coincidence that when the Patriots offense looked the best, when the OL looked the best, when Patricia looked the best was when Zappe was in the game.

If you think that Zappe has been exposed after a bad half, sorry to inform you that Mac Jones has been exposed the last 10 games. Because make no mistakes, Mac was bad after the bye week last year despite having Josh, weapons and a good OL.
