Belichick to Reporters: “You Can’t Replace Cody Davis”
Ian Logue
Veteran special-teamer Matthew Slater sounded gutted while he spoke to reporters last Sunday after Cody Davis left the game against the Browns with what turned out to be a serious knee injury and head coach Bill Belichick seemed to echo that sentiment as he spoke to reporters on Friday.

Yeah right, Bill... Whooo, that's a good one... "You can't replace Cody Davis", what a knee-slappah...

He does have a bunch of roles on ST and last year he had one of the highest tackle counts for special teams. BUT...I'm no fan of ST only players as we all know. Are the ST only players better at special teams then a backup on offense or defense? Sure! Any why is that? Because they are taking reps from the backups...preventing them from getting those reps and getting good at special teams.

I admit he is valuable to the team and hope he has a speedy return.

Interesting take. I've always considered how they take away from depth on O/D, but then there's also the fact that a bad special teams unit can be the achilles heel of an otherwise fully functioning team. 2010 Charges comes to mind.

The circumstances that require ST to be on the field are also circumstances that are ripe for momentum changes, assertions of dominance, the stifling of momentum, and more.

Not saying you're wrong or I'm right, it's just interesting to hear the other perspective.

I've always wondered this.. Especially with the kickoff rule change, I would just have a kicker that can put it into the back of the endzone every single time and that eliminates the need for kickoff coverage specialists like 98% of the time?

Obviously punting is a very important part of the game, but I feel like an athletic backup with reps should be able to do the fundamentals and with a good punter, should be able to limit any huge returns

Easy to say until another team breaks a big punt for a TD I suppose hehe
