No Problem with Jones After All? It Sounds like a Report by Volin on WEEI Wednesday May Have Come From a Bogus Source
Ian Logue
A report by Ben Volin this morning sounds like it may have come from a source who may have been putting him on, and unfortunately Volin ran with it.

You’re telling me Ben “google Kraft foods” Volin got taken in by a fake source and didn’t bother to fact check? Now I’ve seen everything!

Well it didn't stop Felgar and Holly from discussing Volin's contentions as if they were legitimate, instead of just made up stuff. Now both of those guys are smart enough to know that Volin is a fraud, and they cover sports in a town where all FOUR of the major franchises have 12 month interest from their fans. They don't NEED to prop up frauds like Volin and perpetuate his lies in order to fill their hour. There is plenty of stories every day to provide content.

Again, just LAZY. I expect I guess from Volin and Felgar, but not Holly.

Refresh my memory hasn't Volin done this before? What did he do last time?

This is the problem with traditional journalism crossing over into social media, lines get blurred. I hope Volin's employer has a stern talk with him.

Oof, he really did report on the DMs from a random guy.
Wow, that was Borges's exact move!

Or dump him, just like Borges was magically dumped by the Globe and by the Herald shortly after his laziness led to him getting punked.

Sure, he "retired" from the Globe and was "laid off" by the Herald, but these things are not hard to arrange.

I'm still wondering how Thomase wasn't taken to the woodshed nationally over his SB eve lies, so it's no surprise in this instance with Volin.

I have no idea how often stuff like this happens in sports media, but it's absolutely hilarious to see this specific guy get owned in this specific way.

There used to be a journalist standard that a journalist wouldn't report a rumor unless it was verified by two independent and verified sources. Of course in the cable news and social media age, that has basically gone out the window and most journalist reports things that come from one verified source without independent verification. But extremely lazy and unethical journalists like Volin don't even verify the original source and will take a rumor from an unverified person who DMed him.

The thing is too. The guy doesn't claim to even work for the Patriots. It isn't even clear if the person the guy claims told him the information actually works for the Patriots or is an outside vendor of the Patriots. At least, the source that the guy claims to have is clearly not on the coaching staff or works in football operations. Even if Volin verified that this source is true, it would be questionable that he should report this rumor because the alleged originator of the rumor would have little or no direct contact with Jones or the coaching staff to know what his attitude was like and what the coaching staff really thinks.

Normally it's "Trust, but verify."

In Volin's case it's "Don't trust, verify, and still question it."

The problem with this is the bogus report will linger and the correction is buried. He needs to go on WEEI and explain exactly what he got wrong and how he was duped or the apology will be lost in the ether and the bogus story will become truth in a lot of people's minds.

Once TV media became mainstream, the print v broadcast war really heated up. There were standards in both, and they were taken seriously. News and Opinion were separated. Then profits started to be affected. Instead of who could verify and report first, it has become (for a while now) "just get the story out - we'll fix spin any errors in the follow up."

Walter Cronkite used to be the most trusted voice in America. 60 minutes would show up at a corporation's headquarters and their very presence could hurt the stock price. Now it's all narrative over facts. 60 minutes is a shell of itself - more akin to an SNL skit IMHO. Sad, really.
