2022 Patriots Roster Cut Down Day Thread

I thought it was interesting this week Bill essentially said the majority (with a few exceptions) of players cut this week are JAGS (my words, but in the spirit of what he said.

We argue that our binkie shouldn't have been cut, but Bill thinks few amount to much.

How many have been cut here and went on to greatness? Yes there were a few decent NFL players that come to mind, but not many over 20+ years.

It’s hard for me to fathom that we’re going to roll into the season with two TEs. Really, just one TE until Smith proves that he’s not just happy with being paid and decides to actually contribute. I think another shoe is likely to drop before opening day.

TE3 may stay on the PS. If we plan to not use a lot of 2 TE then a 3rd game day active TE may not be necessary. We would use Herron or another OL as short yardage TE3. Most likely you are correct and we will pick up someone cut elsewhere, but I could see the only going with 2 active.

We can complain when BB caused that situation at guard by trading away a proven starter at G for a future 5th round pick then goes on to blow a valuable 1st round pick to replace him. We’re supposed to applaud BB for shoring up the very weakness that he created?

Mason would have been gone, and on the downslope, by the time the rebuild is ready. Its a process, and they are taking the long view.

TBH I don't see it as a big deal.

They've gone with 2TEs before and have later added a "blocking" TE.

The flip side of this is that expressing optimism, happiness, enthusiasm, and satisfaction is considered being disloyal by these folks. Those emotions need to be countered and discounted. How did "homer" become an insult when that's the definition of membership in a fans' forum?

At the very least, this is a bizarre time and place for complaints about the top of the roster given that literally nothing changed in that regard yesterday. There’s a nice “post thread” option for anybody who wants to discuss anything other than yesterday’s back end roster moves.

Definitely skewed by some very old vets.

By 23/24, ideally they still have the young core they’re building now, the oldest of the seniors have retired (unless they’re still playing at a high level), and then mix in a smattering of quality FAs they sign with the gobs of upcoming cap space they’ll have.

Many of those old vets will not be with the team next year.

Is that the problem? Are you sure the problem is not that a bunch of homers look at a stretch of games last year, where the Patriots lucked into a combination of an schedule stretch, games against good teams that were devastated by injuries, and a (not-literal) monsoon, and rode that ridiculously good fortune to a better-than-deserved record and a playoff game, where they were ***** slapped up and down the field for 4 quarters, and just overrate last season?

Because that also fits into the facts of the "problem"...

I happen to disagree that the Pats had a better than deserved record (you can only win the games you play), but I like the post, because there was some good luck last year and we would be silly to discount it. I wouldn't call it ridiculously good fortune, at least not on par with being the AFC East at a time when the other three team owners couldn't cope with the fact that Brady put the Patriots at another level and then panicked every few years and scrapped what their coaching staffs had built. Imagine what might have happened in Buffalo if Brady hadn't signed with the Bucs. I could see one more season where they came-up short in the playoffs and blew the whole thing up, rather than growing into the best team in the AFC today. The way they got smacked by that team was shameful, but it was no shame to lose to them, but they won the games they could while rebuilding. If they can get the offensive line working, they will be in a good place to be better this year, even if the schedule is likely to be a bit harder.

The fact is, the competition level is going up in the NFL, as more teams adopt the more professional approach of the modern era and avoid management by knee-jerk reaction. To be sure, there are giant clown shows out there, too, but those are becoming the exception. Neither the chicken littles nor the true homers see this, but I'm sure it's perfectly clear at Patriots Place. Whether the Pats' approach to team building, their coaching and execution, and, yes, their luck are up for growing into a Superbowl contender remains to be seen. I'm happy to cheer them on in the meantime.

Who cares if someone is overly optimistic or pessimistic? You and I both know that this is one of the more optimistic boards out there, regardless. Like I said, it is just football. The fate of the free world isn’t at stake over what we are discussing on here.

Quite an assertion. What's the evidence of improvement? As clowns go, Mayock and Meyer were as laughable as it's ever been in the NFL.

So then mute those people if you feel that they have something to offer in other threads, but you’re tired of reading their stuff in this one. The mute option has been a godsend for people who don’t want to put others on ignore for those reasons. If you don’t like what they have to offer in general, ignore them. I’m just not sure why so many people care what other posters think or say to the point where a thread about roster cutdowns has become a Class A b.itchfest. And it’s not just you. Some of what grown men are writing on here is cringe.

I'm not suggesting anything be done unilaterally. If you have dozens of posters calling out the same poster for being a whiney ***** who makes it a daily activity bashing actual fans, there is a problem.

I'm happy to keep calling out/battling these clowns but it isn't very fun.

A disconcerting number of our "fans" seem to want us to fail so they can be "right".

Turns out people react more strongly to negative emotion than positive emotion, because it triggers their reptilian "fight or flight" reactions. Since there's no limit to what people fear, there's no limit to how negative you can go and still trigger those strong emotions. For the media companies, this literally is gold. Unfortunately, a lot of people lack the self-awareness needed to figure this out. If they had a better degree of self-awareness they'd do the sensible thing and just turn d-bags like Felger and Mazz off. Instead, we see those d-bags making good coin triggering the masses. Oh, well, it is what it is.

That doesn't feel right to me. There is a roster limit, so you can't keep all the players you think are good. This is not like old time college football where you dress 100+ players. We will see a bunch of those "JAGS" come back to the practice squad, or younger players get moved to the practice squad so those "JAGS" can get a roster spot.

Many of those old vets will not be with the team next year.

Indeed. As you and others pointed out, we are in a multi-year process. BB didn't keep Mason or JC Jackson because this team is not just one or two players away from sustained success. This year is going to have a bunch of ugly moments. The instant gratification crowd is going to be flinging poo against the wall a lot.
