They won't rush him back, unless there are a bunch of injuries at the position.

He was only beginning to carve out his role.
Agreed, no need to rush him back, but I don't think collarbone injuries really fall into that category. You are no more likely to reinsurance a collarbone 1 day after it heals versus 1 year after it heals.

“2. Similarly, I appreciate the fact the guy is a willing blocker but the coaching staff is asking for trouble having him as a routine, inline, between the tackles blocker (as I’ve seen them do at least twice). That should be reserved for unique circumstances and should not be a regular occurrence.”

Yup, saw that too and strongly agree!

To whoever has the "during his 2nd pre-season game" ticket for the over/under pool: Please collect your prize at the back of the hall after the meeting has adjourned, thank you...

Ok so tell me if I get this right. Here are the basics I found online, which I'll try to spell out below...

So plain old IR, you can put people on at any time, and you can have 100 guys on IR, but that's out-for-the-year, simple IR. Can't-come-back IR.

This is no good for Thornton, where you know you want him back.

Then there is IR designated to return. You can use this starting August 31 ( Day after the final roster cutdown to 53, which is at 4p.m. Aug. 30)

You have to keep him on the final 53, IR him, then designate him -- so he DOES count against the final 53, just for a day (same can apply to up to 8 designated-to-returns, though realistically you would want to hoard those designations). Then after that process, you have his roster spot to use on a roster cut. Then if the guys that stick around are good, you are reportedly sicker

Is that how this works? So he'll still be on the 53, but a day later, he goes to IR and his spot opens on the 53...?

all good and interesting talk. 2 points.

1. as the above post explained. He HAS to be on the final 53, and THEN can be put on IR, and one guy can be gotten back. The risk of course is that perhaps the player they hope to get back gets claimed on waivers. 8/31 will be an interesting day all over the league.

2. I didn't see ONE clip from the media stating that Thronton has a broken collar bone. There has been a LOT of implying that he has one, AND he very well may. BUT nothing official.

But that doesn't change the fact that he won't be around for a few weeks at least and will likely get put on IR as soon as possible

Chris Sale wishes Tiquan Thorton a speedy recovery
"We sticks must stick together. Just don't sneeze and don't ride bikes"

Lotsa guesswork on what the injury could be with what seems to be the conclusion that it is broken. Hope is not lost here, he may or may be down for part of the season. Once again speculation reigns supreme based on a couple of tweets. "Collarbone Injury" is not a medical diagnosis..

So I'm not the only one who's been thinking you can screw up a 'collarbone' at either joint as well as breaking it?

Grade 1 seperation would probably be shrugged off as a stinger by the JE11's of the world.

As a guy with grade 3 AC + SC joint issues behind him, Thornton is probably better off with the broken bone long term.

The collar bone is the easiest bone in the human body to break… but his only broke because he’s skinny… good grief.

Just for giggles… which muscle surrounds and protects the collar bone that he should have worked out and bulked up?

Oh yeah…. none.
When I hurt my shoulder my doctor said that you could hurt it by simply losing your balance and hitting a wall as you walk.

Why is this not surprising for you?

Everyone is speculating based on the report that it is a collar bone injury. If it is a broken colarbone it is 6-8 weeks. I separated my colarbone playing rugby 1000 years ago and was out 2 weeks or so. Either way, pretty much worst case is October.

I don't just mean the injury.

Thornton was just carving out his role, and the team is deep at WR.

Unless there are injuries to that position, I would expect the team would use his maximum amount of time of practice once he can participate, before being placed on the actual roster, just to feel comfortable.

I was speculating Wilkerson to IR (to return) in the other thread, but in light of the Thornton injury, not so sure. Tough to have both Wilkerson and Thornton dealing with short term injuries.

PUP list possibly? I’d hate to redshirt him for the season. He needs reps.

Bummer, patriots have bee laughed at by coaches, talking heads for the Cole Strange and Thornton picks. Was looking like one was going to start and the other with a real chance to contribute this year. Was really hoping for that "in your face" moment with those two, they both looked so promising...

I reallly hate that everytime we are excited about a pass catcher something seems to happen.
