“We’re going through a process”

Reporters act like they're entitled to specific information, I don't get it.
It's their job to try, it's not their job to get indignant when the team doesn't want to share strategy info with the public.
And this is where all the Belichick hate originates. He doesn't give the Felger and Mazzes of the world the inside information they want, so they lead the fanbases on a smear campaign.

I wonder if this is that the city did to Red Auerbach when the Celtics were winning 30 games a year from '77 - '79.

Media is setting Bill up in the event the Pats struggle this season.

I don't think it is that at all. Felger has said many times that the hot takes is what drives the ratings. It is kind of a weird phenomena but people love to argue. I highly doubt either him or Mazz believe what they are saying but they need to drive conversation so saying Bill needs to win a SB to legitimize his career drives the ratings.

Not sure if you remember when Bedard first started his paid content site. Felger had him on his show to promote it and Bedard said it was going to be strictly Xs and Os. Felger told him it wouldn't work as people will want the hot takes thrown in. Bedard really pushed back on that notion and then a year later Bedard became one of the biggest hot take guys out there. It kind of is what it is. You can't take any of it too seriously. It is kind of a bummer though that our local guys are so negative all the time. Well, except for Reiss.

Just ask him about LT

If it's about football in general and not Patriots-related, he'll open up. He'll gush over LT or some weird formation that some high school team ran in the 60s...

Almost feels like Bill is setting himself up for the same reason.

I dont understand why he wouldnt have hired a real OC.

I understand you are from Buffalo so I will use small words.

He did hire a real OC, however, if he calls him that Detroit doesn't have to pay him, the Patriots do, so it really isn't very hard to understand. Should I explain using pictures???

$$$$$$$
There you go

He hired two recent head coaches both of whom were with the Patriots before, who are almost certainly more experienced in all facets of the gamet the way the Patriots play it, then some young kid from a college program who is the next great thing.

Most coaches hire OC's and DC's so that when their team sucks and the fans are calling for someone to be fired they can throw the coordinators under the bus and maybe keep coaching a while longer. Bill isn't afraid for his job, no mater what some of the morons on this site think, he is trying to get the best people around him who will help the team win.

Offense got the lead last night. Defense let them down yet again. Patricia is not the problem. this time...

Love BB’s humor but please for the love of god, keep WALDO Patricia as far away from the offense as you can.

Kenny Golliday and Matt Stafford hated his guts when Spaghettio coached over there

I think BB absolutely loves confounding them by playing cat and mouse with them.

He’s not going to show his work, you can see the results of his decision making but not how he decided. That’s his value above replacement.
He also doesn't want to spell out how he does things so his opponents can gain insights.

Too early to tell. Judge was working with Zappe. His calls might have been to see how Zappe would handle some particular details.
Plus, we just learned the Jints were blitzing pretty heavily with Zappe in there. Not a bad move by the Jints since he's a very raw QB, they know he's not at NFL speed, so why not pressure him and try to shake his confidence? Why would they want to help BB install a new offense?

Indeed, and it won't change until fans as a whole get tired of their schtick and search out other sources.

I've stopped listening to EEI and Sports Hub for a long time now, and have switched over to listening to podcasts.

Better content, fewer commercials in general, and you can skip over them easily.

It's pretty clear he respects both Patricia and Judge's football acumen.

It's also clear he's doing something new to him and his staff.

He wants to drive the change himself, and not outsource that work to someone else's idea of a "real OC".

Belichick isn’t going to scrap the offense he took 20 years building. Whoever is going to run it, he has to teach it to. He chose to teach it to coaches he knows, respects, trusty’s and believes are best for the job rather than domejj one new who has different experience.
Along the way, the coaches, as they always do, are collaborating to emphasize or de emphasize certain elements of the playbook and scheme.
It’s been severely overblown, as last night evidenced.
The offense changed far more radically from 2019 to 2020 AND 2020 to 2021 than it is changing this year from what it was last year.
De emphasizing some of McDaniels personal preferences and considering whether they want to make greater use of zone blocking run plays is very much in line with what is find every year.
They tricked you into expecting something else. (You being euphemistic, not you personally)

No, Red got enormous support from the fans. Red could not work for John Y Brown. When Harry Mangurian took over, all was well again.

Who is the real OC he hired?

The Boston Media just needs to process that.

Been thinking about all this...I'm not sure why this play caller topic is a crisis.

  • Let's just say its Patricia calling plays...do people realize that he was one of the best defensive coordinators in the league at one point? Also, being a defensive coordinator, particularly for a team like the Pats who teams throw "everything they have in the playbook" against, means he has a very complex understanding of NFL offenses. Patricia played Tom Brady/McDaniels in practice for years and years and is a smart guy that players like to play for.
  • For those pointing to Joe Judge/Matt Patricia's stints as head coaches as reasons they cant run the offense, look at McDaniel's tenure as a head coach... Not great either.
  • Sounds like Pats would have had a scheme change even under McDaniels to "dumb down/Speed up" the offense... so there was going to be some growing pains no matter what.
  • We still have the greatest head coach in NFL history who helped run a very successful offense for many years. Worst case scenario, you have BB calling plays... I'm 1000% okay with that, personally.

Anyways, just my opinion. I am not a "in BB we trust no matter what" guy, but trying to look at big picture here rather than freaking out after a handful of practices.

On the other side, it's amazing to see the teacher in him come out when he gets an insightful question. Unfortunately, we don't get to see it too often since most reporters are looking for the hot take / sound bite.

But, the Cranky Bill responses are gold.
Honestly though how hard is it for Bill to simply say he is fortunate to have 2 coaches he thinks highly of and wants to give both of them the chance to earn the OC position?

Bill clearly thinks highly of them since he recommended both Matt and Judge to be HC and brought them back immediately once they became available

one of my favorite hot takes so far: it's a competition, and competition is good

patricia is the "OC".......i'm not buying the "earn it" or "competition" angle.......patricia was working with the OL on line calls after the 1st few series and judge called some plays.......it really is that simple
