PFT: Belichick sees Dramatic Improvement in Mac

No but i think the change of our lb corp indicates it
This.

It's clear as day what Bill thought the problem was.

Lack of speed at LB
Lack of man coverage in the secondary
Overall team speed

We can certainly question the quality and talent he brought in to address the issue but his assessment is spot on.

on the long run in the third quarter which luckily ended with a fumble forced by a DB he and Davis were on the field. Their back up running backs killed us (Titans) and miami had one of the worst o lines last season but still managed almost 200 yards on the ground against us. That's just bad football by our front 6
But whether Godchaux played well or poorly depends upon which plays he was on the field for and where they ran.
You can **** down your part of the field and if they open a huge hole to the other side for a long run, you weren’t the problem.
A large issue with the run D was long runs, and long runs are absolutely not on DTs. Bb has always said the first 10 are on the front 6 the rest is on the secondary.
The question was how could it be possible that a DT graded well when the overall run D was poor, not whether the entire front played well against Miami.

part of it was the lack of speed on the second level but if guards going to the second level the issue is with the DT as well. It's fair to say our D-Line could use some help or upgrades next to God and Barmore imo. Move God to 3 T and pair him with a two gapping fatty. This would help imo

In 2019, the Bills were 25th in passing yards, 31st in completion percentage and 19th in yards per pass. Yes, I know that Matt Barkley played two of those games, but his numbers in these stats weren't much different than Allen's. I just used team stats because individual QB rankings drives Allen down since there are other QBs higher than him that played a half a season or less.

But as for individual stats, Allen had a very mediocre 58.8% completion percentage, 6.7 yards per pass, and 193.1 YPG. His QB rating was 85.3. Just to compare, last year he completed 63.3% completion rating, 6.8 YPP, and 259.2 YPG with a QB rating 92.2 QB rating.

And unlike a lot of other people, I think Allen's year last year was overrated. He was inconsistent. That is why from mid-October to mid-December the Bills went 3-5. When he was on, he is as good as or better than any other QB in the league. But he had more than a few awful and/or subpar games like his three INT, no TD game vs. the Falcons or his two INT and no TD game vs the Jags.

As the bolded portion says, you’re just a hater. Your opinion is invalidated by the haterade you drink.

I remember when Bills fans used to say this stuff back in 2003. “Brady is just a system QB, he is middle of the league in most stats, blah blah blah”. It was nonsense, and so is your feeling on Josh (no offense).

Allen threw for 20 TD's and 9 INT's in 2019.

If you want to include his rushing touchdowns in that total, which you are obviously doing, then you better include the fumbles. He had 14. That's almost 1 fumble per game.

Do you count the fumbles for other Qb’s?

Allen lost 10 fumbles that year. To put 10 lost fumbles in perspective, that’s what Brady lost in fumbles in 2003 when he won the SB. And in 2006. And close in 2001 (8 fumbles lost). And again in 2022 (9 fumbles lost).

I’m guessing if I looked through your post history, you never once mentioned lost fumbles in Brady’s stats, and he was losing that many WITHOUT the added rushing yards and rushing TD’s that Allen brings. Hmm.

I'd say in 2019 there were some real signs that the Bills were no longer the Patriots punching bag. Pats went 2-0 but it could have easily been 0-2. Two really tough games.

Although tbh the Patriots should have somehow beaten them in the first game in 2020 too bad Cam fumbled.

And some around the league seem to disagree with you. I don’t think he’s solely responsible but $10 mill a year for a guy who PFF has as the 42nd ranked interior lineman isn’t exactly a steal.

NFL Exec Indicates Patriots Overpaid On Reported Davon Godchaux Extension
This quote from an "unnamed NFL executive" IS quite telling. In that it shows how much of a troll job it was.

First question you have to ask is, IS the guy a PERSONNEL executive. For all we know the guy could be in charge of the salary cap or even the logistics guy who makes sure the luggage gets to the stadium. on time

2nd question would be how well does he know Godchaux and the Pats run defense. All we know is that he had the vague feeling the Pats weren't good against the run at the end of the season. Well we ALL had that feeling, but as to WHY that was so is unclear unless you broke down every running play which I doubt this guy did.

I remember years ago when the great Vince Wilfork was roundly and often criticized because his raw defensive numbers like tackles and sacks were low. IIRC it took several seasons of education before fans and the media came to understand the true impact of what Vince brought to the table.

Now I don't know if this was a good signing or a bad one. But what I DO know is that a vague quote from someone who only has a passing recollection that the Pats weren't good against the run is NOT something I would care a wit about or even acknowledge

I think BB knows that this offense desperately needs confidence with an unproven 2nd year QB. Confidence will be a major factor in whether the Pats can put together a season worthy of making the playoffs.

This was NOT the case when the GOAT was here. In fact overconfidence was likely a bigger problem also contributed to by an abundance of battle tested veterans.

I do not love all the moves BB has made (not at all). However, I understand why he wants to go overboard in praising MAC and others early in TC. They need swagger to succeed in this competitive league.

Shouldn't this go in the Bill Praises Mac thread?

I like Godchaux, but feels like an overpay

Not when the cap is gonna jump and jump and jump and you have tons of space in future years and you have a guy you like and don't want to potentially get Christian Kirk'd by some team throwing out stupid money because they need a DT.

He'll be 29 going into the 2nd year of the deal so he's still in the prime age.

I really don't have feelings either way about Allen. People are judging Allen based on his play at the end of the season and in the playoffs. I am looking at the entire body of work. He was inconsistent last year. Again, when he is on, he is one of the best or if not the best QB in the league. But when he is off, he can really suck. He just isn't as consistent as other top QBs.

I never said he sucked as a QB. I don't think he is elite as other think. I think he is at the top or near the top of the next tier.

But I am done talking Allen. This is a Mac Jones thread and not a Josh Allen thread.

But the Patriots were really not all that great in 2019. A lot of that had to do with the decline of the Pats. If you count the Wild Card round, the Pats were 2-4 in December and January and one of the wins was against the Bills (the other was against a bad Bengals team that went 2-14 that year).

When I discuss quarterbacks, I (like most of the rest of the world) default to passing statistics. You, however, made an argument about Allen where you included his rushing stats in his totals. It is intellectually dishonest to include only the good from his rushing stats and ignore the bad.

Setting aside how amazing it is that you have Tom Brady's 2022 stats at the ready, you are comparing Allen of today to Brady of almost 20 years ago. The NFL was a radically different League back then, especially for the quarterback position.
I’m guessing if I looked through your post history, you never once mentioned lost fumbles in Brady’s stats,
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that's because when I give Brady's stats, I give his passing stats. I don't say he had 45 touchdowns last year.

Since you are so obsessed with my post history, feel free to go through it. You will find that is how I describe quarterbacks.
and he was losing that many WITHOUT the added rushing yards and rushing TD’s that Allen brings. Hmm.
OK, if you want me to discuss Brady, have it your way....

Fumbles each year since 2018:
Allen: 8-14-9-8
Brady: 4-4-4-4

So what exactly is the point you are trying to make here...?

I don't think the players lack confidence in Jones. Nor do I think that Jones lacks confidence in Jones. I don't think that is the reason Belichick is praising Jones.

I just think Belichick believes in Jones and Belichick has been adapting to the changing NFL for years. He heaped praise on Cam Newton too. That is the new Bill.

He also praised another QB so...shrug

You used a generational stereotype to make a point when it's really more about the individual's own sense of self and how established they are in their careers.

I think that determines what they put up with from their coaches.
Generational differences matter. That's why companies adapt to acct for them. Stuff like the advent of SM, the woke philosophy, the sense of entitlement, the need to share everything, have an influence on that generation. We're witnessing today's players doing stuff that was unheard of from older ones.

NVM about the differences between being a HC that's 25 years older than his players vs 45. Sure, football is football, but the approach matters. You think it's a coincidence how much Bill has changed on how he talks about his young players? Or what he puts up with from their SM accts?

Jules said these younger players are different and snickered. As an ex-Pats football player, I'll take his word for it.
Tom had enough of Bill.
Agree.
Tua is an entitled punk.
Please expand on this. Is this just your opinion?

This is going deeper than “how can one guy play well when they let up a lot of yards” so it’s a longer reply than I have time for right now so I’ll address it later.
But otherwise I’m not sure what you mean by Godchaux as a 3 tech. That’s not a role we regularly have on defense and I don’t know how Godchaux would be better in that it doesn’t seem to fit his skill set very well.
Who would be a “2 gapping fatty” that would be better at that role than Godchaux? There arent many of those that actually are any good.

So they know something we don't...I would have probably extended Agholor instead but that's just me.
