PFT: Belichick sees Dramatic Improvement in Mac

I thought he was average. Made some good plays and some bad ones. The LBs behind him sucked. He was the peanut butter to Barmore's jelly. Maybe he looks better with an improved LB group (hopefully they're improved). They needed cap space. Not the worst thing but not super exciting.

Miguel is giving a cap lesson on his twitter page... talking about the Godchaux deal...

one take away? why dont we wait and see what the structure of the deal actually is...

It sucks in the context that you know there will be talented homegrown players that will only get extensions if they take below market deals as that is the Patriots way.

Barmore
D. Harris
Dugger
Onwenu
Meyers
Rham

Even the Mac negotiation will be interesting.

Right now, this has all the hallmarks of being Danny Shelton II.

And the original Danny Shelton was not something I feel needed a sequel.

I still can’t figure out the consensus on him. Half of fans says he’s solid, half say he sucks.
What Godchaux does well... he plays max snaps and stays healthy, he has a high motor and makes tackles all over the field, he creates pressure with his relentless energy, he never gets winded, by playing so much he keeps Guy and Davis fresh and rested.

What he does poorly... everyone keeps saying he's a "run stuffer" when clearly he's not. On third and short and goal line situations he gets replaced by 320 pound Carl Davis who plays about 10-12 snaps per game. Why? Godchaux can't hold up against double teams, he has trouble holding up against the best DT's in the league, he gets moved off his spot.

If the Patriots pay somebody, they play somebody, if they cut you a check you're playing a lot of snaps... he plays a a lot. I hated this signing in the 2021 offseason, I still think this is an overpay and BB is fascinated with mediocrity in regards to Davon. That being said, it's a passing league now. Big ugly DT's like Danny Shelton or Malcom Brown who can only stuff the run and provide next to no pressure in pass rush have been mostly phased out of the modern game. You can only roster one of these guys, when back in the early 2000's you needed at least three of them.

I'd much rather have two Barmore's who can stop the run and rush the passer with equal aplomb, but Barmore is a rare talent... if he was a free agent right now he'd be extremely expensive. Aaron Donald is getting 32 million per, Chris Jones is averaging 20 million per, DJ Reader is averaging 13.3 million per... Godchaux at 10 million per is value inline with the amount of snaps he's playing but they could probably do better. They see value in his snap count and effort. He signed a two year extension, that takes the sting away some. In another year this contract will look small in comparison to what DT's are signing for after the new TV deal makes the salary cap jump.

And sometimes the fans think someone sucks and they just do.
And some fans know almost nothing about football and still manage to post both here as well as on other teams boards pretending they are knowledgeable.

You're the only slow person that would compare Jackson to Vick. No serious person thinks that lol. Like its great to have an opinion but no one worth anything shares that opinion.

I guess my question this point with Jackson is - how much does the team have to be catered to his skill set, and then looking at that setup and how viable it is from a cap perspective?

I'm not at all trying to be in the current argument you're having, this is more or less just a side question I've thought of lately. That 2019 team was incredibly good. Hurst, Boyle, Andrews were great for what Harbaugh was going for. They lost Hurst, but still have the other two.

They lost Ingram and a decent chunk of their O-Line.

Does Lamar's skillset need a very specific roster? Or have the Ravens had difficulty drafting replacements?

14-2
11-5
8-9

To be fair, their division got much tougher with the Bengals emerging. Also, that 2019 team didn't have any superstars at WR. Brown is good, but not someone who is going to make a massive difference. But the 2019 team didn't need superstar WR's. Did their loss of power in the run game translate to putting more pressure on the WR's?

I don't even care if Jackson isn't the most amazing passer, you don't need amazing passing if you presumably have a team that plays to your strengths. I guess my question is: is it more difficult to build a team around a skillset like Jackson's than it is... I dunno, Allen's?

Just throwing q's out there - not really on either side of this fence, just genuinely curious. I don't watch the Ravens much so there could easily be a tale of the tape that I'm just totally unaware of.

Rubbish.

Tua is a ***** and sucks.

How are older millennials different than younger ones?
How is a 26 yo different than a 40 yo? I mean in a lot of ways.

Lol outside of trolling the Chiefs boards a few years ago I don’t post anywhere else.

What I said was Josh Allen sucked until he got a top flight receiver.

Allen had 26 TD’s and 9 INT’s in 2019 before Diggs became a Bill and Allen had already played in a playoff game where he had nearly 400 yards by himself (again, before Diggs became a Bill).

Allen was well on his way before Diggs.

Belichick says Godchaux has made "dramatic improvement" this offseason.

More from Belichick:

"His physical work and conditioning, working on his mechanics, working on his footwork, working on his understanding of our offense...defenses...He's made tremendous strides. He did a great job last year, but he's starting from a much, much higher point."
Lol, he's said the same exact thing about Mac & Nixon. He must've gotten his notes mixed up. Maybe Bill is losing it.

Allen threw for 20 TD's and 9 INT's in 2019.

If you want to include his rushing touchdowns in that total, which you are obviously doing, then you better include the fumbles. He had 14. That's almost 1 fumble per game.

A starter the team likes was playing for $7.5M per year for his two years.

The team extended him for $10M, not much of an increase, given the increase in the cap.
=============
The money shouldn't be the issue.
==========
The issue, as is often the case, is that some fans want to cut players like a lot, especially on the DL.
