Anyone know why we are still carrying a punter with a 4M+ cap hit???

Seems like a perfect opportunity to lower a cap hit with free agent signing. Would have been even better to draft a punter instead of wasting draft picks on 5th RB or 3rd string QB, but I digress...

He is the beneficiary of the CBA...

I expect he will sign an extension before the season starts that lowers his cap hit.

When the Pats actually need the money, they will give him an extension. They tend to do deals like that early in camp and not really before unless absolutely necessary.

There are still a bunch of great free agents (ie: Tres Flowers) that could really help our team. To me this would be as good of a reason as any to create some cap room and snag him up before a better deal comes along.

Just don't forget that Bailey doubles as their kicker for kick-offs. If they do decide to part ways with Bailey, they better get a punter who can kick off because Folk isn't the answer.

IMO if Bailey isn’t the best punter in the NFL then he is close. The team had protection issues last season and he was dealing with an injury. And as Bresna said he wears more hats then most punters.

Maybe his contract will be restructured but IMO it won’t be because a lack of productivity or versatility.

Did his cap hit just unexpectedly jump or do think Bill has known about this for months? No need to blink yet.
His original contract was 4y/2.8m... He earned a cba negotiated performance bonus. his contract literally jumped to 3.98m this year because of an incentive bonus for making the Pro Bowl... and yes BB has known about this for a long while now... they will either extend him, cut him for the cap savings or trade him... or pay him 4m this year

Edit
I would add the incentive kicked in because he wasn't a first round pick and made the pro bowl in his first three seasons per the article freetedwilliams posted

Interested to see what Bill thinks of his current roster.
Some years we pick up guys off waivers that’s on none of our radars.
Sometimes it’s a trade for a veteran.
I’m curious to see how it shakes out.

He's very good at both things he does. Prediction: He'll get a 3-4 year extension for $3.0 a year, which is average for the top punters.

They also have Jake Julien, who signed a 3 year, $2,560,000 contract. But if Bailey is healthy, he'll be gone.

LOL BB loves his special teamers. This is not unusual. The only way Bailey is off the team is if we find a better punter for half the price. Unlikely to happen. Move on.

Ok, but what if he finds a 75% as good punter for 25% of the price????

at some point the cba prices him out of retainability. i think this year still works for an extension but next year

That’s the safe play for Bailey and from the pats perspective that would be a good deal for them going forward. I wonder if he bets on himself with the cap increases coming up if he could get 4 plus AAV on a multi year deal next offseason.

I guess that I didn't know that Bailey is about to get to be paid $4M.

I don't believe that his cap will be $4M. I also don't think that this matters until late August.

I am all for Bailey getting an extension. When healthy, his leg can change field position.

Because he's an ALL-PRO Punter who is better than anyone available. Not to mention that he ALSO does the Pats Kick-offs so that Folk doesn't have to worry about htem..

The reason Bailey's number is over $4M is because of the Escalators that the NFL put into the CBA. A player making the Pro-Bowl during their 1st 3 years gets a salary boost in their 4th year.

Bailey's number jumped at the start of the league year. As part of the latest CBA, there is a "Proven Performance Escalator" program that gives Non-First round pick a salary boost to their contract if they make the Pro Bowl during their 1st three years. Miguel actually mentioned it. I also found this article.

So you're saying Bill has known about this for months now.

Great punter, wish we had tried to draft one though.

Based on the hang times between him and Jake Julien in mini-camp, he's definitely worth more than any replacement level punter they could bring in. He also handles kickoffs and is a known commodity as a holder for Folk. An extension would make sense here.
