How do you know he didn't have a contract offer? He may have chosen to come back to the Pats for less money like so many others have (Andrews, Brown, High, Slater, etc.).

I said at least not enough of a contract offer. The Pats gave him what was a below market deal. So odds are good that no one gave him a market deal offer.

If Thornton looks good in camp and the pre-season, it is likely that we trade Agholor or Myers, and hope to extend the other player.

I think you are confusing contract years Rob... It was after the 2012 season he was a free agent, and almost went to the Giants... he returned here on a one year deal - up to that point (thru the 2012 season) his best year was a total of 235 yards...

He re-signed for the 2013 season, inking a 1 year deal (which is when he got little notice on the fa market)

After the 1000 yd season (2013), when he became a free agent again the team signed him quickly (March of 2014) to a 4 year 17 million dollar deal

He was a free agent in 2014 too. The Pats made him an offer and he turned it down. He visited the 49ers. They didn't give him an offer and the word around the league was he wasn't going to get a team to pay for him and he took the offer the Pats gave him four days later. I just overstated the teams he visited.

I disagree. Like you said, the receivers, especially, are system types and they may feel more comfortable playing in this system. Plus there's Brady who may have had an influence (idk).

Yes. But I love Jakobi and think he would be an OK X receiver for many years as long as Z and the slot are very good. He's very reliable, can move the chains and is likeable.

1. A guy who underwhelmed & we hope improves in his 2nd year;
2. A new guy who has a long history of injuries;
3. A rook that everyone has said needs to get his body to be NFL ready.

Well, we will never know. But I do know the Pats did give him far less than people thought he could get before the start of free agency in 2014. I don't know if the lure of playing with Brady would have been worth millions a year.

I would note that the decision doesn't need to be made until the pre-season. My WAG is that ONE of the FIVE players will be moved, and the Bill MIGHT choose Myers to trade.

AN ASIDE
I don't think that Thornton would have been drafted so high if the staff thought that he needed to bulk up in order to contribute. There is zero guarantee that he would be as good a player if he carried significant additional weight. If Thornton isn't ready. I could see us carrying 5 WR's on the 53. However, Belichick will have a difficult decision to make if Bourne, Parker and Agholor are his top 3 (with Thornton as n inactive backup until he is ready for prime time). How much should he pay for our #4? Is $4M reasonable? I think that it probably is indeed reasonable. Belichick might choose to save $2-3M of cap money on the #4 WR and use Nixon or Wilkerson or a player to be named.

That being said, it does often take patriot rookies a year until they are significant contributors (beyond be ST players).

ALSO, I get that you wouldn't choose to depend on Parker as one of our receivers. Obviously, Belichick strongly disagrees, although Parker could certainly convince him otherwise in camp and the pre-season. You likely wouldn't have signed him.

Top 20 in receptions with 83... #33 in yards... good route runner... 66% catch percentage... there is a lot to like in that package... If he has a repeat performance this coming season, he will get plenty of interest in free agency... Im not saying he's a ten million dollar a year player, but would 6 to 7.5 surprise me? No, it wouldn't...

I suppose if dj chark got 10m, someone could pay Meyers that much or more... The wr market escalated rather sharply this year...

He is not a bad player, but he just is not that talented.

He knows the art of getting open which would make him a good #4 or #5, but
He is useless after the catch & he needs Waze to find the end zone.

I think this all depends on a few different factors, it isn't as clear cut as it seems IMHO.

#1 Does Meyers continue to improve as he has since his rookie year? This is the first season Jakobi is going to have the same QB throwing to him in back to back years. Each year he has improved. He has emerged as a safety valve for Mac and is target a whole lot. He's shown chemistry If he continues to improve - I'm not so sure he's a WR we want to let go , given our troubles in drafting WRs.

#2 Market - He's a possession WR. The market might make it easy to retain his services considering his impact here.

#3 How does the rest of the crew look? Is Parker everything we imagined? Is Thorton for real? Is Bourne improving? Was Tre Nixon minicamp hype for real? All these things and more contribute to how you'll ultimately deal with Meyers. If they all work out to the positive - yeah probably makes moving on from Meyers an easy decision ..if they don't than keeping Meyers as our chain moving, sure handed safety valve for Mac becomes extremely important.

I vote for keeping him on. I think he's a really good slot wr and if Agholor and Harry are goners next year there is definitely a spot for him.

He also had 8 touchdowns in 2019 with 1,000+ yards & 5 TD’s in 2021

If Meyers is looking for 10M+, there’s no way he’s here beyond this season. As many have stated, there’s a strong possibility he gets traded so we at least get something in return. I like Meyers…he’s a decent WR3 or an excellent WR4 on a deep WR unit…but he won’t get that chunk of change in NE.

I think someone is going to give Meyers $10M/year if he has another season with WR2 numbers. The roster management has led me to believe the team wants an upgrade over him, so I would be surprised if the Patriots were the ones to pay that price.

If he has a down year or just gets overlooked in the free agent market, I could see him coming back for a 1 year deal between $3-8M (probably lots of incentives within that range).
