Patriots Player Departure Stidham traded to Raiders

TBF, for a significant portion of the offseason, most of the available evidence (e.g., re-signing McCourty and ignoring all the available veteran QBs, not drafting a QB) suggested that the Patriots were, in fact, going to start either Stidham or Hoyer.

Yeah, after the draft, it really looked like we were rolling with Hoyer. I hated it, but it did look that way.

The Pats drafted Stiddham as a really raw product with a lot of potential upside. When you draft a player like that especially on the third day, you know there is a decent chance the player won't pan out. If Stidham lived up to his potential he would have been an absolute steal. He didn't, but everyone knew that was a very realistic possibility.

At the time, the pick was generally praised. I still think it was good risk/reward pick. Just because the Pats ended up getting next to nothing out of a boom or bust prospect, doesn't change that opinion.

Good luck Jarrett with your new team. Onto our next boom or bust prospect trying to be the Pats' #2 QB.

Check out sometime how many starting QB's are first round picks. And how many failed first round picks there are.

Bill has developed three NFL starting QB's from later rounds. I haven't looked recently, but how many starting NFL QB's were picked later than Jimmy G, Brissett, Casse, Hoyer? And that's not mentioning Brady.

It's elite development.

Plus two of the failed QBs are now HCs and a third is the QB coach for the Rams.

QBs taken after round 1, certainly after Round 2, are expected to be clipboard carriers. A very few might become decent starters, a wild shot here and there might be actually good, or even great.

Generally speaking, these lower-round QBs rarely get on the field on their rookie deal. With no injury, they typically fade to obscurity.

It's strictly cost-benefit for the team to have a rookie holding a clipboard over a more expensive veteran. So Stidham was not a "bad pick." He was, as advertised. It's a cap move as much as anything.

When you heard the Patriots talk about what they were looking to add in this year's draft class the key words were "speed" and "toughness."

Speed is obvious, the toughness not so much. But when I look at that draft class above I see a bunch of guys (N'Keal, Stidham, Winovich) who are mentally weak. Undoubtedly they learned from this mistake and vowed not to repeat it.

We draft a mid round QB every approx 3 years. It means minimal salary cap expenditure as veteran back-up QBs can be expensive. The previous mid round QB is on a contract year when we get the next one, so they can sit a year. Returning players like Hoyer help the transition.

If they can get any draft capital return on a mid round back-up QB that never starts it is a success.

Out of the list of 10 (ignoring zappe and mac) the pats got some kind of draft capital return on 5. 4 of those that didn't are still in the nfl. Kingsbury is now a nfl HC, O'connell an OC and Robinson a QB coach, Etling is on the packers roster. Hoyer should also be counted as a udfa as he has helped this whole process.

BB is really good at drafting QBs that stick around in the nfl. It's superb roster management.

He had one rush move and no counter when an O-lineman easily latches onto him. Likes to stand around when an O-lineman doesn’t fall for his only move.

He’s roadkill when a team runs the football.

It was maybe either him or Ryan Finley, the NC State kid who transferred from Boise State after Jacoby Brissett graduated... After Finley was taken with the 2nd pick of Day 3, their decision might've been made for them... and they still drafted Frodo with the T-Rex arms ahead of him...
