Any thoughts on the tuck rule admission?

What is everyones thoughts on Tom Brady saying that the tuck rule game was actually a fumble? Im in the camp of "It was 20 years ago, it doesnt matter anymore" ... but hey, its the offseason and there isnt much news to talk about. So why not have a discussion.

There’s also a video out there of the official who called it saying it was an easy tuck rule call after review. The same call went against them when they played the Jests earlier that season (same game Bledsoe got hurt).

If Tom said that he's wrong. That was one of many examples that I saw, before and after that game, of what WAS a fumble until the NYFL came up with that rule, which has since been changed after years of whining by the Raiduhs. For a team that talks about how tough they are they sure do cry a lot. They should replace the eye patch in their logo with a tear and some kleenex.

The thinking when they came up with that rule was to give the refs a better point of demarcation for when to call it an attempt at a pass. Once the QB starts his arm forward and the ref can't read the QBs intention, it's a pass until he tucks the ball away. In that case in 2001 Brady's arm looked like it was still going forward and the ref called it exactly like that.

In the end I have to admit that I enjoy all of the crying by Raiduh fans on a call that was perfectly legit. The fact that it came 25 years after the Pats were legitimately screwed by a bad call against them at Oakland, makes this one even sweeter.

This. It was a silly rule but was called correctly, oh and an admission does not contain the word might.

Was that the same game? I didn't realize that.

I saw that rule called the same way many times. The last one I remember was when Tony Romo did the same thing, lost the ball on a fumble and it was returned for a TD by Philly. Instead they called it incomplete.

Brady’s not a referee. The referee interpreted the call correctly based upon the rule that was in place. No one’s opinion changes that fact.

Great example of the double standard for how the Patriots are treated vs. every other team.

The play WAS CALLED A FUMBLE on the field. That call was correctly reversed.

I don't believe instant replay would have had any effect on the yard marker misplacement for Cunningham, the holding of Francis, the cowardly, desperation flop by the untouched Stabler which makes modern day soccer players blush, or the multiple Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties as the seconds ticked down to end the inferior Fraiders/Frauders' season.

That rule was bad just like interpreting a catch which started with Calvin Johnson (or Bert Emanuel) and was at its worst in 2017. The refs were too afraid to call anything incomplete in that Pats Eagles Super Bowl.

From a player’s perspective, the tuck rule was just a technicality. In his mind, is the arm going forward or not, and it wasn’t at the moment, so he feels it’s a fumble. But the letter of the rule spared him.

Same deal with catch interpretation as TheRainmaker pointed out. Or the 4 offensive lineman / declaring ineligible plays the Pats pulled on the Ravens in 2014. They were all correctly ruled by the officials based on the rules in place. But those rules all felt wrong with the spirit of the game, and therefore why the rules were all eventually changed.

Imagine if the Patriots won SB 51 in regulation because they decided to try a fair catch kick. The vast majority of fans and players would have said they won by cheating and exploiting a technicality, rather than fairly.

It was a fumble for as long as I can remember. I also remember jumping up and yelling fumble on that type of play from either side every single time. But it wasn't a fumble by the rule at the time, even if Brady thinks it was.

Winning is awesome. It could be argued the tuck rule set in motion the events of the next two decades. Loved the game, loved the 2001 season, loved the 6 SB wins.

The reversal was the right call. By rule Brady’s arm was clearly moving forward and there was no completed tuck when the ball came out.

I’m sure he thinks he did fumble and that’s ok there was no roughing the passer either the last time these teams met in the playoffs - a call that benefited the Raiders to help them eliminate a better Patriots team that year so it’s all even.
