Bill Parcells, breathless, sounded like an excitable teenager, talking about Saint Peter’s and its remarkable run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

When I mentioned Krzyzewski being 75 and still chasing a sixth national title, Parcells said: “Hey listen, I see [Bill] Belichick. He’s 70 [on April 16]. I ask, ‘How you doing?’ He says, ‘I’m doing good.’ You know, he ain’t retiring any time soon, I don’t think. Doesn’t sound like it to me.’’

So grateful for the super bowl winning teams Bill has put together over the past 21 seasons.

I enjoy reading Peter King from time to time, but I don't think he brought a lot to the table on this one. He could have perused this board and got all those points.

To be fair, when we're talking about opinions, there isn't much that differentiates an intelligent poster from a renowned sports writer. The difference comes in the ability to plug into the league and network with people who can tell you things before the public finds out (which is, in itself, a skill to some extent).

That's why my go-to move for finding out what a team is really like is to read their fan forums.

The last little bit in the piece was helpful. I can't really see Bill here at 80 but that would be cool if he were.

The man can coach as long as he's effective. I'm not interested in watching him be a figurehead like the gents that King mentioned.

Might be an unpopular opinion but when bb decides to hang it up i hope we’re not restricting ourselves to a disciple, rather just make sure we land a solid coach whatever system he wants to implement. Feels like bb’s system only works when he is the man running it. Which is obviously tops but what about when hes no longer here, the results of his coaching tree is not inspiring at all! Vrabel is the only one whos ever implemented it well and he wasn’t a coach here so not sure if he can be considered of the tree or how close he runs things to us.

Might be an unpopular opinion but when bb decides to hang it up i hope we’re not restricting ourselves to a disciple, rather just make sure we land a solid coach whatever system he wants to implement. Feels like bb’s system only works when he is the man running it. Which is obviously tops but what about when hes no longer here, the results of his coaching tree is not inspiring at all! Vrabel is the only one whos ever implemented it well and he wasn’t a coach here so not sure if he can be considered of the tree or how close he runs things to us.

Yeah, no one has been able to replicate the Patriots Way as HC. I'd like to see Josh McDaniels succeed in LV (not at the expense of NE though). It would be nice to see one of BB's disciples be successful for a change.

For about 20 years, I’ve held Peter King as an example of what a great country America is in that a dullard like him can have a great career and life.

Who says 70 is the new 60? Where’s the evidence of it? Kryzewski didn’t even make a final 4 after his 68th birthday before this season’s farewell tour despite having top recruit’s and NBA lottery picks every year. Coach Rah Rah in Seattle presides over a team in steep decline now that he’s finally managed to run off his 32 year old Super Bowl winning QB for a bag of magic beans. Bruce Arians, please.

I want Belichick to succeed. I wanted him out because I believed Josh McDaniels was the best and most deserving candidate to replace him. Now that he’s in Las Vegas, I’m in no hurry to start the Matt Patricia era. But, he’s got to become more chairman of the board than CEO like his buddy Nick in Alabama. He needs to delegate to Groh, Wolf, Patricia, Judge, Mayo and Stephen. But, delegating has never been something he does easily.

King's article makes its most valuable insight when he mentions (almost in passing) that Bill's continued enthusiasm in the game is caused by the fact that.he STILL thinks there are things he can LEARN!

On of Bill's many strengths is that he keeps not only adapting tho the game that has changed radically from the one that was when he came into the league, he often leads the way in that evolution. Hell, the game has changed radically since he's been the HC here. Bill embraces the change. It keeps the game fresh for him.

The other important fact that King points out is the Patriot CULTURE that Bill has built. But what he falls to emphasize is that THAT culture is driven by the PLAYERS and the locker room leadership, It's what people forget or don't understand about the "Patriot Way" is that Bill has been the ultimate "players coach". Because Bill understands that in the end "it is all about the players".

I work at a emergency vet hospital and there are two doctors that immediately came to mind reading this. One is 74 years old and has been in the building for over 50 years. I swear that old man has 3 times the energy I do and is constantly running around getting into everything. He is awful with computer but asks me questions about them and tries to work with them all the time. Every new article that is published is read, shared, and discussed with a child like fascination. On his lunch break he is poking his head into surgery and wondering if anything interesting is going on. If you told me he will still be practicing medicine 15 years from now I would believe it.

Doctor 2 has been working here for 39 years. He hates computers, is very set in his ways, and is basically opposed to anything new just on general principle. He recently sold his share of the partnership and is cutting back his hours and the only reason, IMO, he isnt retiring outright is we are so busy and need him for anything he is willing to do.

The difference between the 2 is night and day and really illustrates what I believe your point was in if you love what you are doing and remain open minded to new ways of doing things then age is just a number. BB still has that fire for football and coaching men at the highest level to play it.

Of course some of his coaching decisions didn't work out. Name one coach that makes every correct coaching decision. the question isn't "Will he make coaching mistakes?", the question is "Who would you rather have coaching the team?"

There's also not much to differentiate the dumbest posters from most renowned sportswriters.

Out here in SoCal in the winters, I just joined an over-60 softball league. The area it covers isn’t huge - maybe 50k people total.

There are around 225 guys playing. There’s a 93-year-old out there twice a week.

You can see the difference in the age groups - some in their late 70’s can still play competitive ball, others really can’t.

People age differently, physically, mentally, emotionally.

A friend is mine was still making cutting-edge science fiction novels at 88, before he died of Covid (Ben Bova). Others friends I know couldn’t have performed at that level of competence at 70.

Emotionally, I know people whose fires of ambition died in their 50’s, while others will play on until they’re put in the ground.

Look around and you all know people like that, too.

I wouldn't restrict the search to disciples if a great candidate is available go for it. But if it's between a random first time coach or a disciple I'd choose disciple. Simple reason being you only get one chance to ride that inertia.
