Lazar's reporting is on par with McCourty’s and Judon's recruiting need I say anymore.
At least Judon was making some effort.
Little does he know BB doesn’t care what his players think as far as players that are a fit.
I honestly have mixed feelings regarding players recruiting.

I’m really hopeful for McGrone, Perkins successfully switching and Wilson picking up pissed off. Have Bentley play a reduced role, with McMillan as top reserve. I don’t have much hope for Uche. I want him to succeed so badly, but he seems to be going the way of Wino.
McMillan is going to be one of the starters. Bank on it.

Perkins is an enigma. The Pats want him to play out of a 2 point stance and were supposedly moving him to LB.. Now we're hearing he's going to be an edge guy. Not sure why they'd insist on a 2 point stance when many of the Pats edge guys use both..

McMillan looked like a decent starter-level player last summer. Let's see how he comes back from injury. They re-signed him quite a while back to his extension so I would guess they really like him.

Evan is having a tough day. Stick to what you're good at. The "sources" game has been out of control. I get that people come across stuff but he's not known for breaking anything. If you don't have real info with those things it shows after a while.

Yeah, I made a pretty similar post a few pages back. I enjoy Evan's work when it has to do with what happens on the field quite a bit, but he's gotta stop acting as if he's an insider. This was a painful one.

"Had discussions with Patterson ... but stop me if you've heard this before: they wouldn't compete with the money" and "Teams call, are told the starting price, and talks don't go any further" are not equivalent statements. One is an actual negotiation process with a player and his agent and the other is literally one brief contact to the agent to see what the starting price is. It's the difference between bidding on a classic car on eBay and losing out vs. just opening the listing to see what the starting bid is.

I read all the reports before McMillan got injured and it sounded like he was more than advertised and tearing it up. I hope you’re right, that he comes back where he left off and showing no lingering issues. He’s young, was calling the D as well, right? And he’s cheap. Im all for it!

As far as Perkins goes, I thought he spent all of last year learning to convert to a stand up LB role, outside. Didn’t hear that they were switching him back. Either way, I’d love to see some of the explosiveness and punch that I saw on his college tape.

To be honest, IDC who steps up. I’d be jacked to see some LB’s flying around the field making plays and laying the wood again. If Uche could somehow magically put it all together, he’d be great out there opposite of the field as Judon. Get Barmore some help in the middle and we’d have a lot of speed and power in all the right places. Throw a guy in the middle who can trail a RB or TE, drop into a deep zone, or gods willing hammer the slant! We have the athleticism on the team, just whether or not they can do it all is another story. Fingers crossed!

I could see BB outbidding the Rams and selling OBJ that he is a 1 here and a 3 with the Rams.

I could see BB taking a flier on the knee he has In the past.

However On record to wanting Jameson Williams in the first round this draft.

Mac knows what he can do.
For once BB listen to your QB.
Priority now is resigning Trent Brown and strengthening the defense.

Mac Jones has never played with Jameson Williams

Yup. There's definitely some very good "B-tier" guys still available. Dudes like Akiem Hicks are still out there. Guessing Bill will grab a couple guys, wait on the draft, then scoop up a few more at that point (there's usually a mini flurry of FA activity right after the draft).

My thought is that 2022 is more about trying to refine what they had in 2021 (which was a team that held the 1 seed for a time before losing steam), get a bit younger on defense, see how competitive they are at that point and then use the cap space available in '23 and then '24 to be a "true" contender in the conference.

I do think it is interesting that many AFC teams this year went into "win now" mode, but only one team can actually come out of the AFC. Those teams will feel the pain of that approach to an extent in a couple years and most won't have anything to show for it. Bill might see this and realize now's not the right time to push his chips to the middle of the table, and may instead opt to wait 2 years until the AFC is hurting a bit and then make moves once his team's foundation is hopefully very solid.
I don’t think for a second that Belichick believes he can’t build a team to compete this season with all the hyped super teams in the AFC.

The “wait for next season before this season even begins” mentality is for the birds. It’s a rationalization for our disappointment in how we think things are going.

There’s a lot of off-season left to go. There are still some good players available in free agency, and I suspect the Pats will sign a few.

Then, there’s the draft. You can make an argument that the best offensive (Mac Jones) and defensive player (Christian Barmore)on the Pats right now were not even on the team until April 30th of last year. I was listening to Gil Brandt, the HOF personnel guy for the Landry Cowboys, the other day on SiriusXM. After listening to him, I’m as psyched for this draft as I have been for one in years.

It lacks elite players at the top of the draft. But, because of Covid canceling or curtailing seasons in 2020, a lot of players who would have been in the 21 draft stayed in school and are now in the 22 draft making this one of the deepest drafts in recent memory. Remember, the Pats only signed QUinn Nordin as an UDFA after the 21 draft because the talent was so thin.

What positions are the deepest? The consensus of what I’ve read or heard is the deepest positions in this draft are: Wide receivers, offensive tackles and cornerbacks. Do those positions sound familiar?

Patriots fans have lived in a win now state for so long which is a darn good thing that we expect this veteran or that veteran to sign on for a championship run. But, for now, at least, we live in a different reality. This team, with this coach, once operated with the draft at the core of its team building. We had not seen that for awhile until last season, but it was once the norm. Take a walk down memory lane, most of the consequential players of the dynasty era came via the draft. I hope they get back to that and I look forward to the draftees making an impact on the 22 team like Jones, Barmore and Stephenson had on the 21 team.

A couple thoughts on the super teams in whose presence we must quake. The media only hypes the acquisitions not the departures. Look at all the transactions for those teams. Secondly, some of you were too young to notice or were not Pats fans at the time. But, in the early years of the dynasty, we were constantly enduring media idiots breathlessly declaring that the no-name, no-talent Patriots had no chance of beating the Uber talented Steelers, Rams or Colts. We know who won those games. A lot of players have a bigger name than game and commentators and fans are often slow to realize it.

Who are these good FAs left? Can you list a few names at each position of need? Serious question.

I would add "who are the good FAs left that are under 30 or 32 years of age"? Serious question.

I am not interested in paying top dollar for a name attached to an aging vet. We tried that last year - locker room voice, vet leadership, bringing along the younger guys, blah, blah, blah. Spare me the BS this year, and let's get younger and more athletic.

Thinking about it. This free agency is more like the norm for the Patriots under Belichick than people are realizing. It seems that most years the Pats sit out the first week of free agency and then go for the value guys who still are good, but not nearly as high priced in week two. And they typically lose several of their higher priced free agents. Let's JC Jackson walk isn't new. They have let players of his caliber walk before. Trading Mason was a bit out of the norm. But most of the other moves and non-moves are not.

The question is now is whether this strategy can work in a Post-Brady era. That hasn't been put to the test yet.

I just think after last year and with the cap expected to explode, people were expecting the Pats to be more aggressive this year. But they are sticking to their usual strategy. They will likely be far more active this week than last. There are still some good free agents left at positions the Pats have needs. Hopefully, they sign some of them.
Yes, this is business as usual.

Last year, Belichick signed at least two years of free agents. Next year, there will be more, plus the extensions (some of which could happen this year).

That being said, this is the year of turnover in the OL, and this is clearly the #1 priority.

If HEALTHY and anywhere near his 2021 form, McMillan is going to be one of he starters.

Signing older veteran for 1 or 2 years has worked for Belichick for 20 years.

I agree. I really don’t like his generic “stand by my tweet” **** though. He could’ve said “Patriots continue to gauge starting price of weapons throughout the league. Cordarelle Patterson is one they decided not to pursue.” Or something like that. Instead he continued the negative slant and made it sound as if the Pats were in negotiations then let themselves get outbid, at least that’s how I took the original tweet, which could be a me problem.
A few have said this in comments.

Yea he knew what he was doing. I get it. That's so much of that job but it's 2022, every one has "sources" now.

He's pretty good looking at film. It's tough though every one wants to stick out and think they're the best. Or Should get recognized.

Are you really incapable of 3 or 4 clicks?

Her's one list.

I know this was a trade but the only top WR UDFAs left are:

OBJ (rumored to LAR)
AB (crazy AF)
Landry (???)
Fuller
Crowder
Valdes-Scantling

There's a few older guys (Hilton, Greene, Jackson, Sanders) that have a bit left in the tank.

A few of our old friends (Byrd, Amendola, Sanu) and a ton of middling ones.

Several of these guys are probably better and cheaper than Agholor but I just can't see Bill getting one. The draft it is.

NE needs: DE, DT, LB, CB, G, WR
Top UFAs left:

OT Terron Armstead
LB Bobby Wagner
DE J Clowney (rumored to CLE)
CB Stephon Gilmore
S Tyrann Mattieu
WR OBJ Jr.
DL Akiem Hicks
DE Melvin Ingram III
WR AB
DL Calais Campbell
OT Duane Brown
TE Gronk
DE Justin Houston
DE Jerry Hughes
QB Jameis Winston
WR Jarvis Landry
CB Steve Nelson
Who would you pick for each position of need?

Who would you pick for each position of need?
My personal choices would be from the list below. Perhaps two are possible. Also, we need to sign lower-level free agents at WR, OG, ST and DL. We have more than 5 months to acquire players from free agency, the draft and trades.

Brown
Flowers
Wagner
Hicks
Gilmore
